1. A communications method comprising the steps of:
- partitioning a predefined number of bits into a first word and a second word;
mapping said first word into a first symbol constellation having a first number of symbols to produce a first data signal;
mapping said second word into a second symbol constellation having a second number of symbols to produce a second data signal, said first and second number of symbols being unequal;
adding a third signal to said first data signal to form a first combined signal;
adding a fourth signal to said second data signal to form a second combined signal; and
transmitting said combined signals.

Abstract
Digital data is encoded by partitioning a predetermined number of bits into two separate words. The first word is mapped into a first symbol constellation to produce a first data signal. The second word is mapped into a second symbol constellation that has a different number of symbols than the first symbol constellation to produce a second data signal. An additional signal is added to the first data signal to form a first combined signal. Another additional signal is added to the second data signal to form a second combined signal. The first and second combined signals are transmitted over a communication channel.
