Abstract

A power control loop is established between an external control device and an implantable device so that only the amount of power needed by the implant device to sustain its present operating conditions is transmitted across a transcutaneous transmission link, thereby reducing the amount of power expended by the external control device. In one embodiment, the power control loop is used with a cochlea stimulating system that includes an externally wearable signal receiver and processor (WP) and an implanted cochlear stimulator (ICS). The power control loop is provided between the ICS and the WP such that power delivered to the ICS is precisely controlled in a closed loop manner, with a variable amount of RF energy (power) being transmitted across the transcutaneous link between the WP and ICS. The transmitted RF energy is received by the ICS and is converted to a voltage that is used as a power source within the ICS for stimulating electrode contacts of the ICS. These contacts, when activated, require a certain amount of current that represents a power drain from the power source (i.e., from the voltage derived from the transmitted RF energy). By monitoring the voltage, and transmitting a signal back to the WP from the ICS indicative of the present voltage level, the WP may supply just enough energy to the ICS to maintain the ICS power source at a specified operating voltage level, thereby resulting is less energy expended by the cochlea stimulating system.

Claims

1. A tissue stimulating system having an external part and an implantable part;

the external part having a battery therein for providing operating power for the system, including means for supplying power to the implantable part;

the implantable part having electrode means and means for stimulating tissue adjacent the electrode means with electrical power derived from the power transmitted to the implantable part from the external part;

wherein the improvement comprises;

means for monitoring power requirements within the implantable part and generating a status signal indicative of such power requirements;

means for transmitting said status signal to the external part;

means within the external part responsive to the status signal for adjusting the amount of power supplied to the implantable part so that the amount of power transmitted to the implantable part automatically tracks the power requirements of the implantable part.

The tissue stimulating system of claim 1 wherein the implantable part includes means for converting power received from the external part to a first voltage, and wherein the means for monitoring comprises means for measuring the first voltage and generating a first voltage status signal indicative of the measured first voltage.

The tissue stimulating system of claim 2 wherein the means for adjusting the amount of power supplied to the implantable part includes means for checking the received voltage status signal every T1 seconds to determine if the measured voltage is below a first prescribed reference value, and if it is the means for adjusting increases the amount of power supplied to the implanted part by a prescribed step increment, so long as the increased power does not exceed a maximum power level.

The tissue stimulating system of claim 3 wherein the means for adjusting the amount of power supplied to the implantable part includes means for checking the measured voltage every T2 seconds, where T2 is greater than T1, to determine if the measured voltage is greater than a second prescribed reference value, and if it is, the means for adjusting decreases the amount of power supplied to the implanted part by a prescribed step increment, so long as the decreased power is not less than a minimum power level.

5. The tissue stimulating system of claim 1 wherein the implantable part comprises an implantable cochlear stimulator (ICS), and the external part comprises an external wearable processor (WP), including a speech processor.

6. The tissue stimulating system of claim 5 wherein the WP comprises a behind-the-ear processor.

7. A cochlear stimulating system comprising:

an external wearable processor (WP), including a speech processor, a battery, a microphone, and an antenna coil;

the microphone being connected to the speech processor, the speech processor including means for converting sounds sensed through the microphone to RF electrical signals indicative of a desired cochlea stimulation pattern, the antenna coil being coupled to the receive RF electrical signals from the speech processor, the battery being coupled to the speech processor to provide operating power thereto; and

an implantable cochlear stimulator (ICS) including an implanted antenna, a receiver, a power monitoring circuit, an electrode array, a current generator, and a telemetry coil;

the implanted antenna being coupled with the antenna coil of the WP so as to receive the RF electrical signal;

the receiver being coupled to the implanted coil and including means for extracting data and power from the received RF electrical signal, wherein the power extracted from the received RF electrical signal provides operating power for the ICS;

the power monitoring circuit being coupled to the power output of the receiver so as to monitor the power consumption of the ICS, and including means for generating a back telemetry signal indicative of the monitored power consumption and applying the back telemetry signal to the telemetry coil; and

the current generator including means for generating a series of electrical stimulation pulses that are applied to the electrode array as a function of the data extracted from the received RF electrical signal; and

wherein

the WP further includes means for receiving the back telemetry signal from the telemetry coil of the ICS and means for adjusting the power level of the RF electrical signal sent to the ICS through the antenna coil as a function of the back telemetry signal so as to compensate for variations in the power consumption of the ICS;

whereby the power coupled to the ICS from the WP automatically tracks the power consumed within the ICS.

An tissue stimulation system comprising an implantable part and an external part, the implantable part having means for supplying electrical stimulation pulses to living tissue as a function of control signals received from the external part, and wherein operating power for the implantable part is provided to the implantable part from the external part;

the improvement comprising;

means within the external part for sensing the power consumption within the implantable part on a continuous and automatic basis, and

means for adjusting the amount of operating power provided to the implantable part so that it tracks the amount of power consumed within the implantable part.

9. The tissue stimulation system of claim 8 wherein the means for sensing power consumption comprises:

means within the implanted part for extracting power from an RF signal sent to the implanted part from the external part and converting the extracted power to a operating voltage;

means for monitoring at the external part the operating voltage within the implanted part; and

means for increasing the operating power provided to the implantable part in the event the monitored operating voltage decreases, and means for decreasing the operating power provided to the implantable part in the event the monitored operating voltage increases.

10. A method for conserving power within a tissue stimulating system having an external part and an implantable part;

the external part having a power source therein for providing operating power for the system, including means for supplying power to the implantable part;

the implantable part having electrode means and means for stimulating tissue adjacent the electrode means with electrical power derived from the power transmitted to the implantable part from the external part;

the method comprising the steps of;

monitoring power consumption within the implantable part;

generating a power consumption signal indicative of changes in the consumed power within the implantable part;

transmitting the power consumption signal to the external part;

adjusting the amount of power supplied to the implantable part as a function of the power consumption signal so that the amount of power transmitted to the implantable part automatically tracks the power consumed within the implantable part.
