Abstract

In one embodiment described in the specification, a surgically implantable reciprocating pump employs a check valve as the piston, which is driven by a permanent magnet linear electric motor to assist either side of the natural heart. The pump is implanted in the aorta or pulmonary artery using vascular attachment cuffs such as flexible cuffs for suturing at each end with the pump output directly in line with the artery. The pump is powered by surgically implanted rechargeable batteries. In another embodiment, pairs of pumps are provided to replace or assist the natural heart or to provide temporary blood flow throughout the body, for example, during operations to correct problems with the natural heart.

Claims

1. A monitoring arrangement for monitoring and controlling a device implantable in a human body comprising a secondary coil which is encapsulated in a material which does not substantially attenuate magnetic flux and is locatable internal to a human body wherein the secondary coil is connected to the device, a primary coil locatable external to a human body which transmits electromagnetic energy by electromagnetic carrier waves to the secondary coil, thereby inducing electric current in the secondary coil for supplying power to the device, and an electrical circuit locatable external to a human body for modulating the electromagnetic carrier waves transmitted to the secondary coil, the device comprising a detection circuit for detecting signals induced by modulation of the electromagnetic carrier waves transmitted to in the secondary coil.

A monitoring arrangement according to claim 1 wherein the electrical circuit locatable external to a human body comprises a communication interface for receiving instructions from a remote location for modulating the electromagnetic carrier waves transmitted to the secondary coil by the primary coil.

3. A monitoring arrangement according to claim 2 wherein the external electrical circuit further comprises means for detecting signals from the device and transmitting the signals to a remote monitoring system.

4. A monitoring arrangement according to claim 3 wherein the remote monitoring system comprises means for acquiring, recording and evaluating data from the external electrical circuit.

5. A monitoring arrangement according to claim 3 wherein the external electrical circuit communicates with the remote monitoring system through a modem.

6. A monitoring arrangement according to claim 1 wherein the external electrical circuit comprises a variable frequency oscillator which modulates the frequency of the electromagnetic carrier waves.

7. A monitoring arrangement according to claim 1 including magnetic means connected to the second coil to improve electromagnetic coupling of the external primary coil and internal secondary coil.

8. A monitoring arrangement according to claim 7 wherein the magnetic means is a ferrite disk.

9. A monitoring arrangement according to claim 8 wherein the secondary coil is embedded on a face of the ferrite disk.

10. A monitoring arrangement according to claim 1 wherein the external electrical circuit comprises non-invasive patient monitoring means for acquiring, recording and evaluating physiological data.

11. A monitoring arrangement according to claim 10 wherein the non-invasive patient monitoring means includes a sphygmomanometer means.

12. A monitoring arrangement according to claim 1 wherein the non-invasive patient monitoring means includes a blood oxygen level sensor means.

13. A monitoring arrangement according to claim 1 wherein the external electrical circuit receives signals transmitted from the device indicating a fault has occurred.

14. A method for monitoring and controlling a device implantable in a human body comprising the steps of:

providing a secondary coil locatable internal to a human body wherein the secondary coil is encapsulated in a material which does not substantially attenuate electromagnetic waves and is connectable to the device,

providing a primary coil locatable external to a human body which transmits electromagnetic energy by electromagnetic carrier waves to the secondary coil, and

providing an electrical circuit locatable external to a human body for modulating carrier waves transmitted to the secondary coil.

15. A method for monitoring and controlling a device implantable in a human body according to claim 14 wherein the external electrical circuit comprises a variable frequency oscillator for modulating the frequency of the electromagnetic carrier waves.

A method for monitoring and controlling a device implantable in a human body according to claim 15 comprising improving electromagnetic coupling of the external primary coil and internal secondary coil with magnetic means having at least two sides wherein the secondary coil is located on one side of the magnetic means and the device is located substantially on another side of the magnetic means.

A method for monitoring and controlling a device implantable in a human body according to claim 16 wherein the magnetic means is a ferrite disk and comprising embedding the secondary coil on a face of the ferrite disk and orienting the disk such that the side having the embedded secondary coil faces toward the external primary coil.

18. A method for monitoring and controlling a device implantable in a human body according to claim 14 wherein the external electrical circuit transmits the signals received from the device to a remote monitoring system.

19. A method according to claim 18 wherein the external electrical circuit communicates with the remote monitoring system through a modem.

20. A method according to claim 14 wherein the external electrical circuit includes a non-invasive patient monitoring system for acquiring, recording and evaluating physiological information.

21. A method according to claim 20 wherein the non-invasive patient monitoring means comprises sphygmomanometer means.

22. A method according to claim 20 wherein the non-invasive patient monitoring means includes a blood oxygen level sensor.

23. A method according to claim 14 wherein the external electrical circuit evaluates signals transmitted by the device and detect faults in the operation of the device.

24. A method according to claim 23 wherein the external electrical circuit communicates faults detected in the device to a remote location.

25. A monitoring arrangement for monitoring and controlling a device implantable in a human body comprising a secondary coil locatable internal to a human body connected to the device, a primary coil locatable external to a human body which transmits electromagnetic energy by electromagnetic carrier waves to the secondary coil and magnetic means having at least two sides wherein the secondary coil is located on one side of the magnetic means and faces the primary coil and the device is located substantially on another side of the magnetic means and wherein the magnetic means improves electromagnetic coupling of the external primary charging coil and internal secondary coil.

26. A monitoring arrangement according to claim 26 wherein the magnetic means is a ferrite disk.

27. A monitoring arrangement according to claim 26 wherein the secondary coil is integral with the device and the secondary coil and the device are hermetically sealed.
