1. A method for use in communicating from a source to a subscriber, wherein the subscriber is connected to a digital network by an analog loop, and the source connected to the digital network for transmitting digital signal to the subscriber, the method comprising the steps of:

  • establishing a connection between a first modem located at the source and a second modem located at the subscriber;

    initializing the first modem and the second modem;

    sending a negotiation request from the first modem to the second modem; and

    responding positively to the negotiation request when the second modem includes a decoder that is operable to recover a sequence of codewords from an analog signal transmitted to the decoder over the analog loop, wherein each codeword in the sequence of codewords is associated with a codeword utilized by the digital network.
