An electrochromic device comprising two opposed conducting electrodes, at least one of which is transparent, an electrochemically active layer disposed on an opposing face of one of said electrodes and an electrolyte disposed between said electrochemically active layer and an other opposing face of said electrodes, wherein said electrochemically active layer is a mixture of an electrochemically active material and an electrochromically-inert additive selected from the group consisting of reducing agents and oxidizing agents.
