1. A method of estimating mobile station location in a wireless communication system, the method comprising the steps of:

  • transmitting during a particular time interval a location signal from a base station of the system, wherein the base station and at least one additional base station of the system at least partially suspend wireless communications for the particular time interval during which the location signal is transmitted, such that the at least partial suspension of wireless communications makes available additional system bandwidth at least a portion of which is utilized for transmission of the location signal; and

    detecting the location signal in a mobile station of the wireless system to generate information for estimating the location of the mobile station.
