Abstract

An on-board aircraft telecommunication exchange (32) provides communication and authentication services for M subscriber identity modules (SIMs) using N transceivers (36), where M can be greater than N. Associations between SIMs (56) and transceivers (36) are established when needed. Accordingly, a pool of transceivers 36 is provided to serve the collective needs of many subscribers. A SIM based authentication process is performed (100) using a subscriber'"'"'s original SIM (56). That authentication can be extended to a temporary SIM (106) that is substituted for the original SIM throughout the remainder of a flight. Alternatively, the original SIMs (56) may be locked in place and relinquished when a subscriber provides an appropriate PIN.

Claims

1. A method for operating a multi-channel subscriber exchange that couples to a network that provides communication and authentication services for subscribers over channels, the method comprising the steps of:

accessing a quantity M of subscriber identity modules (SIMs), where M is an integer number;

controlling a quantity N of transceivers, where N is an integer number less than M;

selecting one of the SIMs and one of the transceivers; and

coupling the selected ones of the SIMs and the transceivers together.

2. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the accessing step comprises the step of extracting personal identification numbers (PINs) from SIMs, and the method further comprises the steps of:

prompting subscribers to enter the PINs; and

granting access to the subscriber exchange if subscribers enter PINs matching PINs extracted from the SIMs.

3. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the accessing step extracts personal identification numbers (PINs) from original SIMs that are inserted into subscriber identity card access ports, and the method additionally comprises the steps of:

prompting for entry of the PINs while the original SIMs are inserted into the subscriber identity card access ports to authorize relinquishing the original SIMs; and

relinquishing the original SIMs from the subscriber identity card access ports if data entered in response to the prompting step matches the PINs extracted from the original SIMs.

4. A method as recited in claim 3, further comprising the steps of:

requesting entry of the PINs to accept the original SIMs into the subscriber identity card access ports; and

locking, after the extracting step, the original SIMs into the subscriber identity card access ports if data entered in response to the requesting step matches the PINs extracted from the original SIMs.

5. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the SIMs and the transceivers are located on an aircraft.

6. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein:

the transceivers are associated with an equipment identity;

original SIMs are inserted into subscriber identity card access ports; and

the accessing step comprises the step of storing the equipment identity to the original SIMs.

7. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the selecting step includes the step of maintaining a list indicating whether the transceivers are available to provide communication and authentication services.

8. A method as recited in claim 7, wherein the selecting step further includes the step of selecting the one of the transceivers from among transceivers indicated as being available in the list.

9. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein:

the communication services are provided during incoming and outgoing calls;

the selecting and coupling steps occur at initiations of the calls; and

the method further comprises the step of decoupling the selected ones of the SIMs and the transceivers at terminations of the calls.

10. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the accessing step comprises the step of obtaining numbers from the SIMs, and the controlling step comprises the steps of:

monitoring incoming ring signals which convey the numbers; and

screening the numbers conveyed with the ring signals for matches with the numbers obtained from the SIMs.

11. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein:

the method further comprises the step of associating handsets with the SIMs;

the selecting step identifies one of the handsets associated with the selected one of the SIMs; and

the coupling step couples the identified handset to the selected transceiver.

12. A method for operating a multi-channel subscriber exchange that couples to a network that provides communication and authentication services for subscribers over channels such that the communication services are provided during incoming and outgoing calls, the method comprising the steps of:

accessing a quantity M of subscriber identity modules (SIMs), where M is an integer number;

controlling a quantity N of transceivers, where N is an integer number less than M;

associating a handset with each of the SIMs;

selecting one of the SIMs and one of the transceivers at an initiation of one of the calls;

identifying one of the handsets associated with the selected one of the SIMs at the initiation of the one of the calls;

coupling the identified handset and the selected SIM to the selected transceiver at the initiation of the one of the calls; and

decoupling the selected SIM from the selected transceiver at a termination of the one of the calls.

13. A method as recited in claim 12, wherein the accessing step comprises the step of extracting personal identification numbers (PINs) from original SIMs that are inserted into subscriber identity card access ports, and the method further comprises the steps of:

prompting for the entry of the PINs while the original SIMs are inserted into the subscriber identity card access ports to authorize relinquishing the original SIMs; and

relinquishing the original SIMs from the subscriber identity card access ports if data entered in response to the prompting step matches the PINs extracted from the original SIMs.

14. A method as recited in claim 12, further comprising the steps of:

extracting international subscriber directory numbers (ISDNs) from the SIMs;

monitoring incoming ring signals, each of which convey an ISDN;

screening the ISDNs conveyed by the ring signals for matches with the ISDNs obtained from the SIMs; and

performing the coupling step when the screening step detects one of the matches.

15. A method as recited in claim 14, wherein the handsets and the transceivers are located on an aircraft.

16. A multi-channel subscriber exchange that couples to a network that provides communication and authentication services for subscribers over channels, the exchange comprising:

subscriber identity card access ports configured to receive a quantity M of subscriber identity modules (SIMs), where M is an integer number;

a quantity N of transceivers, where N is an integer number less than M; and

a controller configured to couple one of the quantity N of the transceivers to one of the subscriber identity card access ports.

17. An exchange as recited in claim 16, wherein:

original SIMs are received at the subscriber identity card access ports; and

the controller further includes means to extract personal identification numbers (PINs) from original SIMs, prompt for entry of the PINs while the original SIMs are inserted into the subscriber identity card access ports to authorize relinquishing the original SIMs, and relinquish the original SIMs from the subscriber identity card access ports if data entered in response to the prompting matches the PINs extracted from the original SIMs.

18. An exchange as recited in claim 16, wherein the subscriber identity card access ports, the transceivers, and the controller are located on an aircraft.

An exchange as recited in claim 16, wherein the controller is further configured to maintain a list indicating whether the transceivers are available to provide communication and authentication services and to couple one of the transceivers indicated as being available in the list to one of the SIMs when providing the communication and authentication services.

20. An exchange as recited in claim 16, wherein:

the exchange further comprises a plurality of handsets coupled to the controller;

incoming ring signals are received at one or more of the transceivers, the ring signals conveying international subscriber directory numbers (ISDNs); and

the controller is configured to extract international subscriber directory numbers (ISDNs) from the SIMs, to screen the ISDNs conveyed by the ring signals for matches with the ISDNs obtained from the SIMs, and to couple one of the handsets and one of the SIMs to one of the transceivers when the match is detected.
