1. A method of determining a carbon dioxide elimination (VCO2) of a patient, comprising:

  • sensing a flow of respiration of the patient over at least a portion of at least one breath;

    sensing a carbon dioxide fraction (ƒ

    ) of said respiration over said at least a portion;

    selecting a tidal volume (Vt) not equal to at least one of an inspiratory tidal volume (Vi) and an expiratory tidal volume (Ve) of the patient; and

    calculating the carbon dioxide elimination with said flow, said carbon dioxide fraction, and said selected tidal volume.
