Abstract

A method of controlling an HVAC system includes measuring environmental and/or physical parameters associated with the controlled space, and making operational decisions based on those parameters. Control apparatus is also provided comprising input circuitry receiving environmental information and output circuitry for controlling an HVAC system. Processing circuitry in the controller configures the output circuitry based at least in part on the signals received on the input circuitry.

Claims

1. An energy recovery apparatus in an environmental control system, said environmental control system comprising:

a controlled space having an ambient temperature;

a thermostat within said controlled space, said thermostat having an output signal for issuing calls for environmental change;

a plurality of energy consuming components which alter one or more characteristics of air to be supplied to said controlled space;

a supply air fan coupled to ventilate said controlled space;

a temperature sensor located to sense a temperature of said controlled space, said temperature sensor having a output signal representative of the temperature in said controlled space;

said energy recovery apparatus comprising;

a microprocessor coupled to said temperature sensor and said thermostat, wherein said microprocessor is configured to turn on at least one of said energy consuming components and said supply air fan in response to a call for environmental change from said thermostat, and wherein said microprocessor is configured to turn off said at least one of said energy consuming components while leaving said supply air fan operational when said call for environmental change is still pending and when said output signal from said temperature sensor indicates that said ambient temperature is outside a predetermined limit.

2. An energy recovery apparatus for improving the energy efficiency of an HVAC system, said energy recovery apparatus comprising;

first input terminals for connection to a thermostat, wherein said first input terminals are configured to receive signals calling for heating and cooling from the thermostat;

second input terminals for connection to environmental sensors, wherein said second input terminals are configured to receive signals indicative of one or more environmental conditions of a controlled space;

output terminals for connection to the HVAC system to control the on/off state of one or more energy consuming components of the HVAC system; and

a microprocessor coupled to said first and second input terminals and to said output terminals, wherein said microprocessor is configured to substantially continually monitor signals on said first and said second input terminals, and wherein said microprocessor is configured to improve the energy efficiency of the HVAC system by cycling the on/off state of at least one of said one or more energy consuming components in response to said signals received from said first and second input terminals.

3. The energy recovery apparatus of claim 2, wherein one or more of said second input terminals is configured to receive signals representative of the approximate temperature of said controlled space.

4. The energy recovery apparatus of claim 2, wherein one or more of said second input terminals is configured to receive signals representative of the approximate temperature of air supplied to said controlled space by said HVAC system.

5. A method of controlling an HVAC system comprising:

automatically measuring physical parameters associated with said HVAC system, said physical parameters including an approximate temperature of air being supplied to a controlled space; and

cycling at least a portion of said HVAC system at a rate which is determined by said physical parameters.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein automatically measuring physical parameters comprises measuring an approximate temperature of air in a controlled space.

7. The method of claim 6, additionally comprising inhibiting said cycling when said approximate temperature is above a predetermined limit.

8. The method of claim 6, additionally comprising inhibiting said cycling when said approximate temperature is below a predetermined limit.

9. The method of claim 5, wherein automatically measuring physical parameters comprises measuring an approximate humidity of air in a controlled space.

10. The method of claim 9, additionally comprising inhibiting said cycling when said approximate humidity is above a predetermined limit.

11. The method of claim 5, wherein automatically measuring physical parameters comprises measuring a duration of a call for environmental modification from a controlled space.

12. A method of cooling a controlled space comprising:

receiving a call for cooling from said controlled space;

initiating operation of an air conditioning unit;

calculating a target temperature;

monitoring a temperature of said controlled space; and

turning off at least a portion of said air conditioning unit while said call for cooling remains pending in response to said temperature of said controlled space reaching said target temperature.

13. The method of claim 12, additionally comprising re-initiating operation of said at least a portion of said air conditioning unit after a period of time has elapsed.

14. The method of claim 12, additionally comprising:

setting a run timer to a starting value;

starting said run timer; and

waiting for said run timer to expire before turning off said at least a portion of said air conditioning unit.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein calculating said target temperature comprises multiplying said starting value of said run timer by a user defined rate of temperature change.

16. The method of claim 14 wherein calculating said target temperature comprises multiplying said starting value of said run timer by a user defined rate of temperature change.

17. The method of claim 12, additionally comprising re-initiating operation of said at least a portion of said furnace after a period of time has elapsed.

18. The method of claim 12, additionally comprising:

setting a run timer to a starting value;

starting said run timer; and

waiting for said run timer to expire before turning off said at least a portion of said furnace.

19. A method of heating a controlled space comprising:

receiving a call for heating from said controlled space;

initiating operation of a furnace;

calculating a target temperature;

monitoring a temperature of said controlled space; and

turning off at least a portion of said furnace while said call for heating remains pending in response to said temperature of said controlled space reaching said target temperature.
