Abstract

A multiplex sensor and a method of use that provides enhanced selectivity and sensitivity. In this method, one or more parameters of the sample are measured by means of multiple spectroscopic techniques, and the interferences from physiological and spectral variables are reduced or eliminated. In one embodiment of the present invention comprises a multiplex sensor and a method of use that provides enhanced selectivity and sensitivity. One or more parameters of the sample are measured by means of at least two different spectroscopic techniques, wherein the at least two different spectroscopic techniques are selected from the group consisting of:

(a) infrared absorbance

(b) scattering

(c) emission

(d) polarization, and

(e) photoacoustics.

Claims

1. A method for measuring at least one parameter of a sample comprising the steps of:

(a) illuminating said sample with light;

(b) performing at least two spectroscopic measurements, wherein said at least two spectroscopic measurements are different members of the group consisting of;

infrared absorbance,

scattering,

diattenuation,

emission spectroscopy,

photoacoustic spectroscopy,

provided that said photoacoustic spectroscopy relates acoustic signal intensity directly to the measurement of said at least one parameter of said sample; and

(c) analyzing said spectroscopic measurements to determine a measurement of said at least one parameter of said sample.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said sample comprises a body part.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said at least one parameter is the concentration of at least one analyte.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein said analyte is glucose.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein said analyte is selected from the group consisting of:

glucose, alcohol, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), bilirubin, hemoglobin, creatine, electrolytes, blood gases, and cholesterol.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein said analyte is hemoglobin.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein at least two of said spectroscopic measurements are made substantially simultaneously.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein at least two of said spectroscopic measurements are made consecutively.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of removing an interference related to at least one physiological variable.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein said physiological variable is selected from the group consisting of:

(i) temperature,

(ii) pulsatile flow,

(iii) tissue scattering, and

(iv) sample heterogeneity.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein said spectral variable is selected from the group consisting of:

(i) a protein,

(ii) water,

(iii) a fat, and

(iv) a chiral molecule.

12. A method for measuring at least one parameter of a sample comprising the steps of:

(a) illuminating said sample with light;

(b) performing at least two spectroscopic measurements, wherein said at least two spectroscopic measurements are different members of the group consisting of;

infrared absorbance,

scattering,

polarimetry,

emission spectroscopy,

photoacoustic spectroscopy,

provided that said photoacoustic spectroscopy relates acoustic signal intensity directly to the measurement of said at least one parameter of said sample; and

(c) analyzing said spectroscopic measurements to determine a measurement of said at least one parameter of said sample, further comprising the step of measuring at least one spatial dimension.

13. A method for measuring at least one parameter of a sample comprising the steps of:

(a) illuminating said sample with light;

(b) performing at least two spectroscopic measurements, wherein said at least two spectroscopic measurements are different members of the group consisting of;

infrared absorbance,

scattering,

polarimetry,

emission spectroscopy,

photoacoustic spectroscopy,

provided that said photoacoustic spectroscopy relates acoustic signal intensity directly to the measurement of said at least one parameter of said sample; and

(c) analyzing said spectroscopic measurements to determine a measurement of said at least one parameter of said sample, further comprising the step of measuring at least one temporal dimension.

14. A method for measuring at least one parameter of a sample comprising the steps of:

(a) illuminating said sample with light;

(b) performing at least two spectroscopic measurements, wherein said at least two spectroscopic measurements are different members of the group consisting of;

infrared absorbance,

scattering,

polarimetry,

emission spectroscopy,

photoacoustic spectroscopy,

provided that said photoacoustic spectroscopy relates acoustic signal intensity directly to the measurement of said at least one parameter of said sample; and

(c) analyzing said spectroscopic measurements to determine a measurement of said at least one parameter of said sample, further comprising the step of measuring at least one spatial dimension and at least one temporal dimension.

15. A method for measuring at least one parameter of a sample comprising the steps of:

(a) illuminating said sample with light;

(b) performing at least two spectroscopic measurements, wherein said at least two spectroscopic measurements are different members of the group consisting of;

infrared absorbance,

scattering,

polarimetry,

emission spectroscopy,

photoacoustic spectroscopy,

provided that said photoacoustic spectroscopy relates acoustic signal intensity directly to the measurement of said at least one parameter of said sample; and

(c) analyzing said spectroscopic measurements to determine a measurement of said at least one parameter of said sample, further comprising the step of removing an interference related to at least one spectral variable.

16. The method of claim 15, further including the step of correcting said physiological variable by means of at least one of the following dimensions:

(d) a spectral dimension,

(e) a spatial dimension,

(f) a temporal dimension.

17. The method of claim 15, further including the step of correcting said spectral variable by means of at least one of at least one of the following dimensions:

(j) a spectral dimension,

(k) a spatial dimension,

(l) a temporal dimension.
