Method of convenient call acceptance for an ISDN communications controller
First Claim
1. In a system having a plurality of telephones coupled to a communications controller which is connected to an integrated services digital network (ISDN) line of a telecommunications network, the ISDN line having two bearer channels of predetermined bandwidth and a data channel and the plurality of telephones being represented by a plurality of identifiers, a method for convenient incoming call acceptance comprising:
- associating each identifier for the plurality of telephones with a distinctive ring pattern;
receiving, on the data channel, a dialed identifier of the plurality of identifiers which was dialed in connection with an incoming call;
ringing idle telephones of the plurality of telephones according to the distinctive ring pattern associated with the dialed identifier; and
connecting a first telephone of the idle telephones which goes off-hook, through a voice subchannel extracted from the bandwidth of the two bearer channels, to the incoming call;
wherein the voice subchannel is extracted from at least one of the two bearer channels, and wherein data for the at least one bearer channel is formatted using octets and each octet which contains data for the at least one bearer channel is subdivided to provide at least one bit for the voice subchannel.

Abstract
In system having a plurality of telephones coupled to a communications controller which is connected to an integrated services digital network (ISDN) line of a telecommunications network, the ISDN line having two bearer channels of predetermined bandwidth and a data channel and the plurality of telephones being represented by a plurality of identifiers, a method for convenient incoming call acceptance comprises the communications controller associating each identifier for the plurality of telephones with a distinctive ring pattern. The controller receives, on the data channel, a dialed identifier of the plurality of identiers which was dialed in connection with an incoming call and rings all idle telephones of the plurality of telephones according to the distinctive ring pattern associated with the dialed identifier. The controller connects a first telephone of the idle telephones which goes off-hook, through a voice subchannel extracted from the bandwidth of the two bearer channels, to the incoming call.

7. In a system having a plurality of telephones and at least one line interface unit, wherein each telephone is coupled to one of the at least one line interface units, which is further coupled to a communications controller which is connected to an integrated services digital network (ISDN) line of a telecommunications network, the ISDN line having two bearer channels of predetermined bandwidth and a data channel and the plurality of telephones being represented by a plurality of identifiers, a method for convenient incoming call acceptance comprising:
-
associating each identifier for the plurality of telephones with a distinctive ring pattern; receiving a dialed identifier of the plurality of identifiers which was dialed in connection with an incoming call; ringing idle telephones, of the telephones which are coupled to a particular line interface unit, according to the distinctive ring pattern associated with the dialed identifier; and connecting a first telephone which goes off-hook, of the idle telephones coupled to the particular line interface unit, if a connection has not already been made with a telephone connected to another line interface unit, through a voice subchannel extracted from the bandwidth of the two bearer channels, to the incoming call; wherein the voice subchannel is extracted from at least one of the two bearer channels, and wherein data for the at least one bearer channel is formatted using octets and each octet which contains data for the at least one bearer channel is subdivided to provide at least one bit for the voice subchannel. - View Dependent Claims (8)
