1. A method of detecting a chemical moiety, said chemical moiety having the formula

  • space="preserve" listing-type="equation">(A).sub.k (B).sub.u

A is a compound which can be induced to repeatedly electrochemiluminesce by exposure to electrochemical energy;

B is a biological substance which is attached to A;

k is an integer equal to or greater than 1;

and u is an integer equal to or greater than 1;

which method comprises;

a. forming a mixture containing the chemical moiety;

b. exposing the chemical moiety to electrochemical energy; and

c. detecting emitted electrochemiluminescence and thereby detecting the chemical moiety.
