Abstract

The present invention pertains, in a preferred embodiment, to a fluid-pervious web comprising a first or wearer-contacting surface and a second or garment-facing surface. The web is particularly well suited for use as a topsheet on a disposable absorbent article. The first and second surfaces are separated from one another by an intermediate portion. The first surface of the web provides a structure which exhibits a surface energy less than the surface energy of the intermediate portion. In a preferred embodiment, the web exhibits a plurality of regions of comparatively low surface energy which define surface energy gradients where they interface with higher surface energy web surfaces. More particularly, the present invention pertains to a fluid-pervious web having a plurality of small-scale surface energy gradients which are oriented and located so as to effectively transport fluid away from the first or wearer-contacting surface. The web essentially retains its visual, tactile, and physical properties of the substrate material while achieving the desired surface energy properties. Fluid transport webs according to the present invention preferably include discontinuous, spaced regions defining small scale surface energy gradients on the first surface to aid in small scale fluid movement toward apertures or capillary entrances for transport away from the first surface. Such webs also preferably include small scale surface energy gradients normal to the first surface within a capillary structure to aid in moving fluid away from the first surface and into the capillaries for capillary fluid transport. Web materials suitable for use in the present invention include apertured formed films, apertured and non-apertured nonwoven materials, composite structures, and the like.

Claims

1. A method of manufacturing a web exhibiting a plurality of surface energy gradients, said web having a first surface said first surface being a wearer contacting surface when said web is used as a topsheet in an absorbent article, an opposed second surface, and an intermediate surface therebetween, said method comprising the steps of:

(a) forming a plastic film, said film having a first layer and a second layer, said first layer exhibiting a first ductility and a first surface energy, said second layer exhibiting a second ductility which is greater than said first ductility and a second surface energy which is greater than said first surface energy;

(b) feeding said plastic film onto a forming structure;

(c) subjecting said plastic film to a pressure differential sufficient to urge said plastic film into conformance with said forming structure and to fracture said plastic film so as to form discrete fluid passageways having a sidewall portion, said passageways communicating with said first and second surfaces, wherein said formation of said fluid passageways reveals said first layer adjacent said first surface and said second layer adjacent said second surface such that the interior of said sidewall portion comprises said intermediate surface and at least a portion of said intermediate surface comprises said second layer.

2. The method claim 1, wherein said second layer includes a resin-incorporated surfactant.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said pressure differential is applied via vacuum.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said pressure differential is applied via a high pressure fluid jet.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein said web includes at least one intervening layer between said first and second layers.

6. The method claim 5, wherein said at least one intervening layer exhibits surface energy characteristics intermediate those of said first and second layers.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein said web includes more than one intervening layer between said first and second layers.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein said first layer forms an irregular edge forming a boundary between said first layer and said second layer.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of subjecting said plastic film to a pressure differential forms boundaries between said first and second layers which are located within said fluid passageways.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of feeding said plastic film onto said forming structure comprises extrusion of said plastic film onto said forming structure.
