A method for separating excess water, sludge, or both, from recovered crude petroleum oil comprising adding to the crude petroleum oil a composition comprising about 40 to 99 wt % of a fatty acid alkyl ester blend and about 1 to 25 wt % of at least one lower alkyl glycol ether, and then agitating the mixture.
