Abstract

Utilization of a contact device placed on the front part of the eye in order to detect physical and chemical parameters of the body as well as the non-invasive delivery of compounds according to these physical and chemical parameters, with signals preferably being transmitted continuously as electromagnetic waves, radio waves, infrared and the like. One of the parameters to be detected includes non-invasive blood analysis utilizing chemical changes and chemical products that are found in the front part of the eye (conjunctiva) and in the tear film. A transensor mounted in the contact device laying on the cornea or the surface of the eye is capable of evaluating and measuring physical and chemical parameters in the eye including non-invasive blood analysis. The system preferably utilizes eye lid motion and/or closure of the eye lid to activate a microminiature radio frequency sensitive transensor mounted in the contact device. The signal can be communicated by cable, but is preferably actively or passively radio telemetered to an externally placed receiver. The signal can then be processed, analyzed and stored. Several parameters can be detected including a complete non-invasive analysis of blood components, measurement of systemic and ocular blood flow, measurement of heart rate and respiratory rate, tracking operations, detection of ovulation, detection of radiation and drug effects, diagnosis of ocular and systemic disorders and the like. Other advantages are somnolence awareness, activation of devices by disabled individuals, a drug delivery system and therapy for ocular and neurologic disorders, and treatment of cancer in the eye or other parts of the body, and an evaluation system for the overall health status of an individual. The device quantifies non-invasively the amount of the different chemical components in the blood using a contact device with suitable electrodes and membranes laying on the surface of the eye and in direct contact with the tear film or surface of the eye (conjunctiva), with the data being preferable transmitted utilizing radio waves, but alternatively sound waves, light wavews, wire, or telephone lines can be used for transmission.

Claims

1. A contact device for placement in direct apposition to the conjunctiva of the eye, said contact device comprising:

a housing for placement adjacent to the conjunctiva of the eye,

a sensor contained in the housing for receiving fluid from the conjunctiva for at least one of chemical, physical, cellular and molecular evaluation, and

said housing being less than 2.5 mm in thickness.

2. A contact device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said housing is sealed except for an opening for receiving fluid from the conjunctiva.

3. A contact device as claimed in claim 2, wherein said housing is made of a polymer.

4. A contact device as claimed in claim 2, wherein said housing is made of hydrogel.

5. A contact device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said housing includes an electric power source.

6. A contact device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said housing includes a power transducer for converting muscular work into electrical energy.

7. A contact device as claimed in claim 6, wherein said housing includes an energy storage medium.

8. A contact device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said housing includes chemical reagents.

9. A contact device as claimed in claim 8, wherein said reagents are refillable.

10. A contact device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said housing includes at least one of hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces.

11. A contact device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said sensor is at the largest a microfluidic chip.

12. A contact device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said sensor is a biosensor.

13. A contact device as claimed in claim 12, wherein said biosensor is coupled with a physicochemical transducer producing an electronic signal proportional to a concentration of at least one element being evaluated.

14. A contact device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said sensor is part of an amperometric system producing current when electrons are exchanged between a biological system and an electrode as a glucose measuring system.

15. A contact device as claimed in claim 12, wherein said biosensor is an optical diagnostic biosensor.

16. A contact device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said housing includes a radio frequency transceiver for transmission of a signal to a remote receiver indicative of a result of fluid analysis.

17. A contact device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said housing include microchannels.

18. A contact device as claimed in claim 17, wherein said microchannels are up to 100 μ

m in depth and 1 to 500 μ

m wide.

19. A contact device as claimed in claim 17, wherein the microchannels convey the fluid to at least one of reagents and sample solutions in said housing for analysis of the fluid.

20. A contact device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said housing includes an ultra-capacitor charged externally by an electromragnetic induction coupling.

21. A contact device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said sensor measures temperature.

22. A contact device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said housing includes a storage compartment for holding a drug, the storage compartment being controllable for release of the drug upon measurement of a predetermined condition.

23. A contact device as claimed in claim 19, wherein flow of the fluid through said microchannels is controlled by an electromagnetic force.

24. A contact device as claimed in claim 19, wherein flow of the fluid through said microchannels is controlled by an electrical force.

25. A contact device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said sensor is a DNA chip system.

26. A diagnostic system for medically monitoring or evaluating a condition of an individual, said diagnostic system comprising:

a housing for placement under the eye lid of the individual in contact with the conjunctiva of the eye, and

a sensor contained in the housing for receiving fluid from the conjunctiva of the eye, said sensor being capable of measuring bodily functions based upon the fluid received from the conjunctiva of the eye,

said housing being less than 2.5 mm in thickness.

27. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said housing is sealed except for an opening for receiving fluid from the conjunctiva.

28. A contact device as claimed in claim 27, wherein said housing is made of a polymer.

29. A contact device as claimed in claim 27, wherein said housing is made of hydrogel.

30. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said housing includes an electric power source.

31. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said housing includes a power transducer for converting muscular work into electrical energy.

32. A contact device as claimed in claim 31, wherein said housing includes an energy storage medium.

33. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said housing includes chemical reagents.

34. A contact device as claimed in claim 33, wherein said reagents are refillable.

35. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said housing includes at least one of hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces.

36. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said sensor is at the largest a microfluivdic chip.

37. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said sensor is a biosensor.

38. A contact device as claimed in claim 37, wherein said biosensor is coupled with a physicochemical transducer producing an electronic signal proportional to a concentration of at least one element being evaluated.

39. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said sensor is part of an amperometric system producing current when electrons are exchanged between a biological system and an electrode as a glucose measuring system.

40. A contact device as claimed in claim 37, wherein said biosensor is an optical diagnostic biosensor.

41. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said housing includes a radio frequency transceiver for transmission of a signal to a remote receiver indicative of a result of fluid analysis.

42. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said housing include microchannels.

43. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said microchannels are up to 100 μ

m in depth and 1 to 500 μ

m wide.

44. A contact device as claimed in claim 41, wherein the microchannels convey the fluid to at least one of reagents and sample solutions in said housing for analysis of the fluid.

45. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said housing includes an ultra-capacitor charged externally by an electromagnetic induction coupling.

46. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said sensor measures temperature.

47. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said housing includes a storage compartment for holding a drug, the storage compartment being controllable for release of the drug upon measurement of a predetermined condition.

48. A contact device as claimed in claim 44, wherein flow of the fluid through said microchannels is controlled by an electromagnetic force.

49. A contact device as claimed in claim 44, wherein flow of the fluid through said microchannels is controlled by an electrical force.

50. A contact device as claimed in claim 26, wherein saidsensor is a DNA chip system.

51. A method of determining a medical condition of an individual, said method comprising:

moving a fluid capturing device into contact with the conjunctiva of the eye,

capturing fluid from the conjunctiva in the fluid capturing device, and

analyzing the fluid to determine the medical condition of the individual.

52. A method as claimed in claim 51, wherein the fluid capturing device is included in a contact device placed in contact with the eye.

53. A method as claimed in claim 52, wherein the contact device is a contact lens.

54. A method as claimed in claim 52, wherein the contact device is a rod movable towards and away from the eye.

55. A method as claimed in claim 53, wherein the contact lens includes an annular portion for supporting analysis equipment.

56. A method as claimed in claim 53, wherein the contact device is placed under an eye lid of an eye of the individual.

57. A method as claimed in claim 51, wherein the fluid capturing device includes a biosensor.

58. A method as claimed in claim 51, wherein the fluid capturing device includes a microfluidics system.

59. A method as claimed in claim 51, wherein the fluid capturing device is less than 2.5 mm thick.

60. A method as claimed in claim 55, wherein the analysis equipment includes a microfluidic system, a biosensor, a power supply and a transceiver connected together.

61. A method as claimed in claim 54, wherein the rod displays the medical condition of the individual.

62. A method as claimed in claim 54, wherein a tip of the rod is coated with antigen.
