Abstract

A miniaturized spectrometer is adapted for placement within a body near tissue to be characterized. The spectrometer includes a light source and a plurality of light detectors. The light source generates light to illuminate the tissue. The detectors detect optical signals from the illuminated tissue and convert these optical signals to electrical signals. The miniaturized spectrometer can be disposed at the distal end of an interventional device. Optical conduits, such as fiber optic cables or strands, extending the length of the interventional device are not required when the miniature spectrometer is employed.

Claims

1. A tissue spectroscopy device, comprising:

a spectrometer having a distal window and including a light source for generating light and illuminating tissue with the generated light, and a plurality of light detectors for detecting optical properties of the illuminated tissue, the plurality of light detectors converting optical signals to electrical signals, said distal window providing optical access to the tissue for both the light source and the plurality of light detectors;

a substantially optically transparent tip at least partially encapsulating the spectrometer, a longitudinal cross section of the tip having two opposing sides which converge and define substantially an angle; and

an interventional device for delivering the spectrometer to tissue.

2. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 1 wherein the spectrometer further includes a lens disposed in a pathway of light generated by the light source.

3. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 1 wherein the spectrometer further includes a frequency multiplier disposed in a pathway of light generated by the light source for amplifying frequency of the light emission.

4. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 1 wherein the spectrometer further includes a filter disposed in a pathway of light generated by the light source for illuminating tissue with light having a predetermined wavelength.

5. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 1 wherein the spectrometer in any direction is less than about 3 mm.

6. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 1 wherein the plurality of light detectors detect light emission at multiple wavelengths.

7. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 1 wherein at least one detector of the plurality of light detectors monitors light emission from the light source.

8. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 1 wherein the spectrometer further includes at least one filter disposed adjacent a detector of the plurality of light detectors for selectively detecting light emission having a pre-determined wavelength.

9. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 1 wherein the interventional device is selected from a group consisting of catheter, guidewire, needle, endoscope, implant, and trocar.

10. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 1 wherein a surface of the tip is coated with a material for improving light transmission.

11. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 1 wherein the tip comprises at least one fluid channel in communication with a lumen in the interventional device for delivering a fluid necessary for a monitoring procedure.

12. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 1 wherein the tip comprises at least one filter and the light source rotates with respect to the tip, thereby adjusting an optical property of the light generated by the light source.

13. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 1 further comprising an external power source in electrical communication with the light source and the plurality of light detectors.

14. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 1 wherein the light source provides ultraviolet (UV) light and at least one light detector detects UV light emissions from the illuminated tissue.

15. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 14 wherein the spectrometer further includes at least one filter disposed adjacent at least one detector for selectively detecting UV light emission within a predetermined wavelength band.

16. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 14 wherein the spectrometer further includes at least one filter with a passband centered at a wavelength of 380 nm disposed adjacent at least one of the light detectors.

17. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 14 wherein the spectrometer further includes at least one filter with a passband centered at a wavelength of 440 nm disposed adjacent at least one of the light detectors.

18. The tissue spectroscopy device of claim 1 wherein the tip has a blunt end.

19. A method for characterizing tissue comprising the steps of:

providing a tissue spectroscopy device comprising;

(i) a spectrometer having a distal window and including a light source and a plurality of light detectors for converting optical signals to electrical signals, (ii) a substantially optically transparent tip at least partially encapsulating the spectrometer, a longitudinal cross section of the tip having two opposing sides which converge and define substantially an angle for optimizing tissue contact and optical transmission, and (iii) an interventional device for delivering the spectrometer to tissue;

placing the spectrometer inside a body near tissue to be characterized;

connecting the light source and the plurality of light detectors to a power source;

passing light from the powered light source through the distal window of the spectrometer and the tip of the device to illuminate the tissue; and

passing light from the illuminated tissue through the same distal window of the spectrometer and the same tip of the device to the detectors for measuring an optical property of the illuminated tissue.

20. The method of claim 19 further comprising monitoring light emission from the light source.

21. The method of claim 19 wherein providing a spectrometer comprises providing a module having the light source and the plurality of light detectors formed on a single substrate.

22. The method of claim 21 further comprising rotating the spectrometer with respect to the tip, thereby adjusting optical property of the light generated by the light source.

23. The method of claim 19 further comprising delivering a fluid necessary for a monitoring procedure to the illuminated tissue through at least one fluid channel disposed within the tip.

24. The method of claim 19 wherein the plurality of light detectors comprises a light detector having a plurality of channels and measuring optical properties comprises detecting light emission at multiple wavelengths.

25. The method of claim 19 wherein the step of passing light to illuminate the tissue comprises focusing the light from the powered light source on the tissue to be illuminated with a lens disposed in a pathway of the generated light.

26. The method of claim 19 wherein the step of passing light to illuminate the tissue comprises diffusing the light from the powered light source with a lens disposed in a pathway of the generated light to illuminate the tissue.

27. The method of claim 19 wherein the step of passing light to illuminate the tissue comprises amplifying the light from the powered light source by passing the light through an optically nonlinear substance before illuminating the tissue.
