Abstract

An architecture for components of a vehicle, wherein the architecture facilitates the upgrading, replacement, removal or addition of the components in the vehicle. In one embodiment, a network is installed in the vehicle, wherein the network comprises a transmission medium and one or more network devices coupled thereto. The network devices are addressable using IP addresses or object terminology. The network devices may be configured to determine the capabilities of other devices, or they may be configured to look up the services provided by devices on the network, and they may utilize these services and capabilities themselves. The network devices are not constrained to use predetermined designs or interfaces which may be necessitated by the use of proprietary buses or connections. The network devices may be automatically integrated into the network using a discover-and-join protocol and may easily be removed from the network.

Claims

1. A method for changing vehicle components comprising:

providing a vehicle having a network installed therein, wherein said network comprises a transmission medium, a server connected to said transmission medium, a Java ring reader connected to said transmission medium, and a first vehicle component connected to said transmission medium, and wherein said server and said first vehicle component comprise addressable network devices;

disconnecting said first vehicle component from said transmission medium; and

connecting a second vehicle component to said transmission medium, wherein said second vehicle component is distinct from said first vehicle component and wherein said second vehicle component is an addressable network device.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising said network automatically integrating said second vehicle component into said network.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein said network automatically integrating said second vehicle component into said network is performed using a discover-and-join protocol.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein said network automatically integrating said second vehicle component into said network is implemented using Jini.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said transmission medium is selected from the group consisting of:

coaxial cable;

twisted pairs of wires;

optical fibers;

free space; and

peripheral connections.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising coupling said network to an onboard diagnostic system.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein said onboard diagnostic system comprises a dedicated bus and wherein coupling said network to said onboard diagnostic system comprises coupling said network to said dedicated bus.

8. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the Java ring reader provides a password function.

9. A system for a vehicle comprising:

a network transmission medium;

one or more vehicle components coupled to said network transmission medium, wherein said vehicle components comprise addressable network devices;

a Java ring reader coupled to the network transmission medium, wherein the Java ring reader is configured to control access to the network transmission medium; and

a communications device coupled to said network transmission medium, said communications device configured to provide wireless communications between said one or more vehicle components and an external network.

10. The system as recited in claim 9, wherein said one or more vehicle components includes one or more of the following:

a microphone;

a camera;

a global positioning system (GPS) receiver;

on-board diagnostic (OBD) interfaces;

a compact disk player;

a radio;

security devices;

display devices; and

local area networks (LANs).

11. The system as recited in claim 9, wherein said one or more network devices are addressable using internet protocol (IP) addresses.

13. The system as recited in claim 9, wherein at least one of said network devices is a server.

14. The system as recited in claim 9, wherein said one or more network devices are each configured to transmit and receive data according to a predetermined network protocol.

15. The system as recited in claim 14, wherein said predetermined network protocol is defined by IEEE standard 802.

16. The system as recited in claim 9 further comprising a lookup server, wherein said lookup server is configured to register services corresponding to said one or more network devices.

17. The system as recited in claim 16, wherein said one or more network devices are configured to look up services register on said lookup server and to request one or more of said services register on said lookup server.

18. The system as recited in claim 16, wherein services corresponding to each of said network devices are automatically registered on said lookup server when each of said devices is coupled to said network transmission medium.

19. The system as recited in claim 16, wherein said network services are configured to periodically transmit a notification signal to said lookup server, wherein said notification signal is indicative that said network devices are coupled to said network transmission medium.

20. The system as recited in claim 16, wherein each of said network devices provides data to said lookup server indicating a location external to said network from which said lookup server can retrieve information regarding services corresponding to each of said network devices.

21. The system as recited in claim 9, wherein said transmission medium includes one or more of the following:

coaxial cable, twisted pair wiring, free space, optical fibers, and peripheral connections.

22. The system as recited in claim 9, wherein the Java ring reader provides a password function.

12. The system as recited in claimed 9, wherein said one or more network devices are addressable using object terminology.
