1. A compact, hand held device for curing photosensitive dental compositions curable by way of irradiation with light of predetermined wavelength comprising:

  • (a) a handle configured for gripping by a user;

    (b) a light emitting diode head assembly secured to said handle including at least one light emitting diode constructed to emit light of said predetermined wavelength in response to an applied operating current, said light emitting diode having a characteristic maximum luminous power output where increasing the current does not increase the optical power output; and

    (c) a current supply coupled to said light emitting diode, said current supply operating said light emitting diode at a luminous power output of at least about 85 percent of its characteristic maximum luminous power output.
