1. An apparatus for detecting potentially hazardous inflation gas conditions in a tire inflated substantially with nitrogen, comprising:

  • an oxygen sensor sensing an oxygen concentration in the interior of the tire;

    an electrical circuit generating a signal when the oxygen concentration exceeds a predetermined value indicative of a potentially hazardous inflation gas condition;

    an indicator responsive to the signal indicating when the oxygen concentration exceeds the predetermined value; and

    a battery powered power supply that activates at least one of the oxygen sensor and the electrical circuit for at least about three seconds and deactivates at least one of the oxygen sensor and the electrical circuit for substantially longer than about three seconds.
