1. A system for providing Internet service comprising:
- a plurality of remote units that communicate through a satellite link;
a hub station in communication with the satellite and in communication with a plurality of content servers; and
wherein data from the content servers is communicated to the hub station via the Internet, and said data is transmitted from the hub station to the plurality of remote units via the satellite link with the data formatted to comply with Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) standard, and wherein the Internet data is formatted within DVB frames such that fragment headers occur at variable locations within the DVB frames, and stored within the DVB frame is a value indicating location of the fragment header within the DVB frame.

Abstract
Transmission of TCP/IP data over a satellite link from a hub station to a plurality of remote units. The data, transmitted over the satellite link, uses the digital video broadcast (DVB) protocol. A field in the DVB header is used to indicate the location of the start of a new TCP/IP data packet within the DVB data. Use of a field in the DVB header to indicate the location of the start of a new TCP/IP data packet supports variable location of TCP/IP data within a DVB frame, and therefore more efficient use of the DVB bandwidth.

4. In a communication system in which a hub station transmits data to a plurality of remote units, a method of communicating comprising:
-
accepting a block of Internet data from a network by the hub station;
transmitting the block of Internet data from the hub station to the plurality of remote units over a satellite communication channel conforming to Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) standard, wherein the Internet data is formatted within DVB frames such that fragment headers occur at variable locations within the DVB frames, and stored within the DVB frame is a value indicating location of the fragment header within the DVB frame; and
receiving the block of Internet data transmitted from the hub station by the plurality of remote units. - View Dependent Claims (5)

6. A method of formatting TCP/IP data for transmission over a link using Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) standard comprising:
-
accepting MAC frames which contain the TCP/IP data;
formatting the MAC frames within DVB frames such that fragment headers occur at a variable location within the DVB frames;
storing, within the DVB frames, position location which specifies the location of the fragment header within the DVB frame;
transmitting the DVB frame from a hub station over a satellite link; and
receiving the DVB frame transmitted from the hub station by a plurality of remote units. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8)
