1. A method of sorbing a target substance comprising the steps of:

  • providing a quantity of finely divided nanocrystalline particles consisting essentially of a member selected from the group consisting of metal oxides and metal hydroxides; and

    contacting said particles with a target substance under conditions for sorbing at least a portion of said target substance, said target substance being selected from the group consisting of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and toxins.
