Abstract

An apparatus is described for withdrawing filtered permeate from a substrate contained in a reservoir at ambient pressure. The apparatus includes a plurality of membrane assemblies. Each assembly has a plurality of hollow fiber filtering membranes, immersed in the reservoir, at least one permeating header with the membranes sealingly secured therein, and a permeate collector to collect the permeate sealingly connected to the at least one permeating header and in fluid communication with lumens of the membranes. The membranes of each assembly extend generally vertically upwards from a first header during permeation. One or more sources of suction are provided in fluid communication with the lumens of the membranes of each assembly through the permeate collectors and apply sufficient suction to withdraw permeate from the lumens of the membranes. An aeration system for discharging bubbles assists in keeping the membranes clean. In other aspects, a method of removing fouling materials from the surface of a plurality of porous membranes includes providing, from within a membrane module, gas bubbles in a uniform distribution relative to the membranes. The bubbles move past the surfaces of the membranes to dislodge fouling materials from them. The membranes are arranged in close proximity to one another and mounted to prevent excessive movement.

Claims

1. A membrane module comprising a plurality of porous hollow fibre membranes, said membranes being arranged in close proximity to one another and mounted to prevent excessive movement therebetween but unconfined in a solid modular shell, and a gas distribution means having holes or openings connected through a header used to mount the membranes to air tubes adapted to be connected to a source of pressurized gas for providing, from within the module, by means other than gas passing through the pores of said membranes, gas bubbles such that, in use, said bubbles move past the surfaces of said membranes to dislodge fouling materials therefrom and cause the membranes to sway.

2. A membrane module according to claim 1 wherein said porous membranes are mounted relative to one another so as to produce a rubbing effect between said membranes when moved.

3. A membrane module according to claim 1 wherein the fibres are sealed at the lower end and open at their upper end to allow removal of filtrate.

A filtration system including a membrane module according to claim 1 wherein said membrane module is positioned vertically in a tank containing a slow moving or captive feed liquid under ambient pressure to be filtered, and including a source of suction to apply a transmembrane pressure to said fibres in said module to cause filtrate to pass through pores in said fibres and a source of pressurized gas to supply continually or intermittently a supply of gas to said holes or openings for providing gas bubbles such that said gas bubbles move upwardly and parallel to and along said fibres to scour the outer surfaces thereof.

5. A filtration system according to claim 4 further having a system to backwash the fibres with a liquid.

6. The filtration system of claim 5 wherein the liquid comprises permeate.

7. The filtration system of claim 4 wherein the tank is a dead end tank.

8. A filtration system comprising;

a) a tank for containing a slow moving or captive feed liquid under ambient pressure to be filtered;

b) a membrane module having a plurality of porous hollow fibre membranes extending between and mounted at each end to a respective potting head, the membranes mounted into close proximity to each other and swayable but mounted to prevent excessive movement relative to each other, the module placed in a vertical position in the tank so as to be submersible in the feed liquid;

c) a source of suction on the insides of the membranes to apply a transmembrane pressure to the membranes to cause a permeate to pass through the pores in the membranes;

d) a system for backwashing the membranes with a backwashing liquid; and

,

e) a gas supply system to continually or intermittently supply gas bubbles from within the module by means other than gas passing through the pores of the membranes such that, in use, the bubbles move past the surfaces of the membranes;

wherein the gas supply system further comprises aeration holes through the lower potting head for discharging gas bubbles from an upper surface of the lower potting head, said gas supply system further comprises a manifold below the lower potting head connected through air tubes to a source of pressurized gas and the aeration holes communicating between the manifold and the upper surface of the lower potting head.

9. The filtration system of claim 8 wherein the gas supply system includes a tube which spaces the potting heads apart form each other.

10. The filtration system of claim 8 wherein the backwashing liquid comprises permeate.

11. The filtration system of claim 8 wherein the potting heads are spaced apart by a distance that is between 0.1% and 1% greater than the length of the fibres between opposed surfaces of the potting heads.
