1. A system for controlling the scrolling of a display comprising:
- an input device having a rotational member including a wheel having at least a wheel portion extending from an outer surface;
said wheel portion being configured to receive a manual movement to provide rotation of said rotational member; and
a control system that monitors a first rate of rotation of said rotational member and a second rate of rotation of said rotational member in which said first rate and said second rate are different, said control system configured to calculate a relative rotational rate between said first rate and said second rate, said control system outputting at least one scroll signal for controlling the scrolling of said display in relation to said relative rate.

Abstract
A system and method for accelerating scrolling of a display is disclosed. When a wheel of a wheeled pointing device is actuated by a user at a first rotational rate, the display in a window scrolls up or down one line at a time. When the wheel is rotated at a second rotational rate, the display in the window scrolls up or down multiple lines at a time. In additional embodiments, the scrolling technique shifts from one line at a time/multiple lines at a time to a page or pages at a time when the wheel is rotated for at a rotational rate for a minimum period of time.

said wheel portion being configured to receive a manual movement to provide rotation of said rotational member; and

receiving signals indicative of the operation of a rotational member including a wheel on a computer input device;
said wheel having at least a portion extending from an outer surface of the input device;
said portion being configured to receive a manual movement to provide rotation of said rotational member; and
processing said signals in accordance with a first rate of rotation of said rotational member and a second rate of rotation of said rotational member in which said first rate and said second rate are different, determining a relative rotational rate between said first rate and said second rate;

29. A computer input device for controlling the scrolling of a display on a screen comprising:

a housing having an outer surface and a bottom surface;
a rotational member including a wheel;
the wheel having at least an exposed portion protruding away from the outer surface;
said exposed portion being configured to receive a manual movement to provide rotation of said rotational member;
a sensing device for monitoring the rotation of said rotational member and outputting signals;
wherein said signals are monitored to determine a first rate of rotation of said rotational member and a second rate of rotation of the rotational member in which the first rate and the second rate are different so to form a relative rotational rate, and the scrolling of said display is controlled based on said relative rate. - View Dependent Claims (30, 31, 32, 33, 34)
