Abstract

A medical device comprising a supporting structure having a coating on the surface thereof, the coating containing a therapeutic substance, such as, for example, a drug. Supporting structures for the medical devices that are suitable for use in this invention include, but are not limited to, coronary stents, peripheral stents, catheters, arterio-venous grafts, by-pass grafts, and drug delivery balloons used in the vasculature. Claims

1. A medical device comprising a supporting structure having a coating on the surface thereof, said coating containing the therapeutic substance

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or prodrug thereof.

2. The medical device of claim 1, wherein said supporting structure is selected from a group consisting of coronary stents, peripheral stents, catheters, arterio-venous grafts, by-pass grafts, and drug delivery balloons.

3. The medical of claim 1, wherein said coating is polymeric.

4. The medical device of claim 1, wherein said polymeric coating is biostable.

5. The medical device of claim 1, wherein said polymeric coating is biodegradable.

6. A medical device comprising a supporting structure having a coating on the surface thereof, said coating containing the therapeutic substrate

7. A medical device comprising a supporting structure having a coating on the surface thereof, said coating containing the therapeutic substance

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or prodrug thereof.

8. The medical device of claim 7, wherein said supporting structure is selected from the group consisting of coronary stents, peripheral stents, catheters, arterio-venous grafts, by-pass grafts, and drug delivery balloons.

9. The medical device of claim 7, wherein said coating is polymeric.

10. The medical device of claim 9, wherein said polymeric coating is biostable.

11. The medical device of claim 9, wherein said polymeric coating is biodegradable.

13. The medical device of claim 10, wherein said supporting structure is selected from the group consisting of coronary stents, peripheral stents, catheters, arterio-venous grafts, by-pass grafts, and drug delivery balloons.

12. A medical device comprising a supporting structure containing the therapeutic substance

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or prodrug thereof.

14. A medical device comprising a supporting structure containing the therapeutic substance

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or prodrug thereof.

15. The medical device of claim 14, wherein said supporting structure is selected from the group consisting of coronary stents, peripheral stents, catheters, arterio-venous grafts, by-pass grafts, and drug delivery balloons.

16. A medical device comprising a supporting structure containing the therapeutic substance
