Abstract

The interior cabin of a vehicle is provided with a vehicular sound-processing system that comprises an interior rearview mirror assembly, the mirror assembly including a mirror housing and a reflective element. An accessory is located in the interior cabin. The interior rearview mirror assembly comprises a user-interaction site for a wireless communication system, the wireless communication system communicating with the accessory. The user-interaction site comprises at least one microphone for producing an audio output in response to detection of vocal input of a human speaker in the interior cabin with the vehicle cabin noise superimposed thereon. Preferably, the user-interaction site further comprises at least one manually operated control input. The restricted-range wireless communication system preferably comprises one of a radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system and an infrared restricted-range wireless communication system. Signals indicative of the vocal input detected at the user-interaction site of the interior mirror assembly are wirelessly broadcast to the accessory located in the interior cabin of the vehicle.

Claims

1. A vehicular sound-processing system suitable for use in a vehicle, said vehicular sound-processing system, comprising:

an interior cabin of the vehicle;

an interior rearview mirror assembly in said interior cabin of the vehicle, said mirror assembly comprising a mirror having including a reflective element, said mirror assembly adapted for attachment to one of a windshield portion and a header portion of said interior cabin or the vehicle;

an accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle;

said interior rearview mirror assembly comprising a user-interaction site for a wireless communication system;

said wireless communication system comprising a restricted-rage wireless communication system, said restricted-range wireless communication system wirelessly communicating with said accessory;

said accessory comprising at least one of a computer, a personal display accessory, a cellular phone, a pager, and an automatic tollbooth payment system;

said user-interaction site comprising one chosen from a single-element microphone and a plurality of microphones, said one chosen from a single-element microphone and a plurality of microphones operable for producing an audio output in response to detection of vocal input of a human speaker in said interior cabin with vehicle cabin noise superimposed thereon;

said user-interaction site further comprising at least one manually operated control input;

said restricted-range wireless communication system comprising one of a radio-frequency restricted-range wireless communication system and an infrared restricted-range wireless communication system; and

wherein signals indicative of said vocal input are wirelessly broadcast to said accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle.

2. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 1, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a transmitter that transmits signals to a receiver external to the vehicle.

3. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 2, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system of the vehicle comprises a receiver that receives signals from a transmitter external to the vehicle.

4. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 3, wherein said rearview mirror assembly includes an indicator operable to indicate at least one of clarity, level and volume.

5. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 1, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said one of a single-element microphone and a plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise.

6. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 5, said processing including at least one chosen from echo cancellation, beam forming, active noise cancellation, adaptive noise cancellation, digital filtering, closed loop noise cancellation, syllabic rate filtering, and destructive interference.

7. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 5, wherein said digital sound processor comprises a microcomputer.

8. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 5, wherein at least one of said one of a single-element microphone and a plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor is included in said mirror housing.

9. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 1, wherein said one of a single-element microphone and a plurality of microphones is included in said mirror housing.

10. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 5, wherein said digital sound processor is included in said mirror housing.

11. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 5, wherein said one of a single-element microphone and a plurality of microphones is included in said mirror housing and said digital sound processor is included in said mirror housing.

12. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of said one of a single-element microphone and a plurality of microphones is accommodated to the rear of said reflective element in said mirror housing.

13. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 6, wherein said digital sound processor is included in said mirror housing.

14. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 1, wherein said one of a single-element microphone and a plurality of microphones provides an audio input to a vehicular telematics system.

15. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 14, wherein said vehicular telematics system comprises an emergency communication system.

16. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 4, wherein said indicator provides a secondary signal.

17. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 16, wherein said secondary signal comprises a security alarm status.

18. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 1, wherein said one of a single-element microphone and a plurality of microphones comprise a single-clement microphone.

19. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 18, wherein said mirror housing includes said single-element microphone.

20. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 19, wherein said mirror housing includes said at least one manually operated control input.

21. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 19, wherein said single-element microphone comprises a pressure-gradient microphone.

22. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 19, wherein said accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle comprises a cellular phone.

23. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 19, wherein said accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle comprises a cellular phone and wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly includes said accessory.

24. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 20, wherein said accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle comprises a cellular phone.

25. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 20, wherein said accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle comprises a cellular phone and wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly includes said accessory.

26. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 19, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said single-element microphone and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle comprises a cellular phone and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises echo cancellation.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 19, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said single-element microphone and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle comprises a cellular phone and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises digital filtering.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 19, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said single-element microphone and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly includes said digital sound processor.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 20, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said single-element microphone and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises echo cancellation.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 20, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said single-element microphone and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises digital filtering.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 20, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said single-element microphone and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly includes said digital sound processor.

32. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 19, wherein said restricted-range wireless communication system comprises a radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system.

33. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 32, wherein said radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system comprises a BLUETOOTH radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system.

34. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 20, wherein said restricted-range wireless communication system comprises a radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system.

35. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 34, wherein said radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system comprises a BLUETOOTH radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system.

36. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 1, wherein said restricted-range wireless communication system comprises a radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system.

37. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 36, wherein said radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system comprises a BLUETOOTH radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system.

56. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 1, wherein said rearview mirror assembly includes an indicator operable to indicate at least one of clarity, level and volume and wherein said indicator comprises a light-emitting diode.

57. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 1, wherein said one of a single-element microphone and a plurality of microphones comprise a plurality of microphones.

58. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 57, wherein said mirror housing includes said plurality of microphones.

59. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 57, wherein said mirror housing includes said at least one manually operated control input.

60. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 58, wherein said mirror housing includes said at least one manually operated control input.

61. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 58, wherein said accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle comprises a cellular phone.

62. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 58, wherein said accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle comprises a cellular phone and wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly includes said accessory.

63. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 59, wherein said accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle comprises a cellular phone.

64. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 59, wherein said accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle comprises a cellular phone and wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly includes said accessory.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 58, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises echo cancellation.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 58, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises digital filtering.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 58, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises beam forming.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 58, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises active noise cancellation.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 58, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises adaptive noise cancellation.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 58, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises closed loop noise cancellation.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 58, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises syllabic rate filtering.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 58, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises destructive interference.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 58, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly includes said digital sound processor.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 59, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and said processing by said digital sound processor comprises echo cancellation.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 59, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises destructive interference.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 59, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly includes said digital sound processor.

83. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 58, wherein said restricted-range wireless communication system comprises a radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system.

84. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 83, wherein said radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system comprises a BLUETOOTH radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system.

85. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 59, wherein said restricted-range wireless communication system comprises a radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 57, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises digital filtering.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 57, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly includes said digital sound processor.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 57, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises beam forming.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 57, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises active noise cancellation.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 57, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises adaptive noise cancellation.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 57, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises closed loop noise cancellation.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 57, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output of said plurality of microphones and said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise and wherein said processing by said digital sound processor comprises syllabic rate filtering.

The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 57, wherein said plurality of microphones comprises first and second microphones, said first microphone having a first zone of principal sensitivity, said second microphone having a second zone of principal sensitivity directed in a direction that is different from that of said first zone of principal sensitivity, said second zone of principal sensitivity being directed generally toward at least the driver of the vehicle.

109. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 108, wherein said first zone of principal sensitivity is generally directed in a direction of a windshield of the vehicle.

110. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 58, wherein said plurality of microphones is provided in a unitary module.

an interior rearview mirror assembly, said mirror assembly comprising a mirror housing including a reflective element, said mirror assembly adapted for attachment to a portion of said interior cabin of the vehicle;

an accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle;

said interior rearview mirror assembly providing a user-interaction site for a wireless communication system;

said wireless communication system comprising a restricted-range wireless communication system, said restricted-range wireless communication system wirelessly communicating with said accessory;

said user-interaction site comprising at least one microphone operable for producing an audio output in response to detection of vocal input of a human speaker in said interior cabin with vehicle cabin noise superimposed thereon;

wherein signals indicative of said vocal input are wirelessly broadcast to said accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle;

wherein said restricted-range wireless communication system comprises a radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system; and

wherein said radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system at least one of a) has a wireless transmission range of about 30 feet, b) wirelessly transmits at an about 2.45 gigahertz band, and c) wirelessly transmits data at a rate of at least about 720 kilobits per second.

128. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 127, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a transmitter that transmits signals to a receiver external to the vehicle.

an interior rearview mirror assembly, said mirror assembly comprising a mirror housing including a reflective element, said mirror assembly adapted for attachment to a portion of said interior cabin of the vehicle;

an accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle;

said interior rearview mirror assembly providing a user-interaction site for a wireless communication system;

said wireless communication system comprising a restricted-range wireless communication system, said restricted-range wireless communication system wirelessly communicating with said accessory;

said user-interaction site comprising at least one microphone operable for producing an audio output in response to detection of vocal input of a human speaker in said interior cabin with vehicle cabin noise superimposed thereon;

wherein signals indicative of said vocal input are wirelessly broadcast to said accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle;

wherein said restricted-range wireless communication system comprises a radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system; and

wherein said vehicular sound-processing system operates in at least one of a voice recognition mode, a voice verification mode and a voice activation mode.

254. The vehicular sound-processing system of claim 253, wherein said vehicular sound-processing system comprises a transmitter that transmits signals to a receiver external to the vehicle.

an accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle;

said interior rearview mirror assembly providing a user-interaction site for a wireless communication system;

said wireless communication system comprising a restricted-range wireless communication system, said restricted-range wireless communication system wirelessly communicating with said accessory;

said user-interaction site comprising at least one microphone operable for producing an audio output in response to detection of vocal input of a human speaker in said interior cabin with vehicle cabin noise superimposed thereon;

wherein signals indicative of said vocal input are wirelessly broadcast to said accessory located in said interior cabin of the vehicle;

wherein said restricted-range wireless communication system comprises a radio frequency restricted-range wireless communication system;

said vehicular sound-processing system comprising a digital sound processor, said digital sound processor receiving a signal indicative of said audio output;

said digital sound processor processing said signal indicative of said audio output and providing an output vocal signal with reduced vehicle cabin noise; and

wherein said processing includes at least one chosen from echo cancellation, beam forming, active noise cancellation, adaptive noise cancellation, digital filtering, closed loop noise cancellation, syllabic rate filtering, and destructive interference.
