Abstract

Methods, apparatus, and systems are provided concerning modular lamp controllers. In one embodiment, a modular lamp controller dims a high intensity discharge lamp based upon occupancy. The lamp has a port within its fixture, and the port is coupled to a lamp capacitor. The modular lamp controller includes a housing, a plug, a capacitor, a switch, an occupancy sensor, a switch controller, a power supply, an interchangeable lens assembly, and a mounting adapter assembly. The plug is adapted to connect to the port. The capacitor couples in series with the lamp capacitor when the plug is attached to the port. The switch defines a full and reduced power state of the lamp. The occupancy sensor generates a signal indicating the presence of an occupant within a monitored space. The switch controller operates the switch to activate the full or reduced power state of the lamp based upon the occupancy signal. The power supply operates using current from the lamp when the plug is attached to the port. The interchangeable lens assembly acts as optics for the occupancy sensor, and the mounting adapter assembly mounts and locks the modular lamp controller into position.

Claims

1. A modular lamp controller for dimming a lamp, comprising:

a plug configured to attach to an external port of a fixture of the lamp;

a first capacitor coupled to the plug, the first capacitor being coupled to a second capacitor within the lamp and being configured to reduce a power state of the lamp when the plug is attached to the port;

a switch coupled to the first capacitor and configured to define full and reduced power states of the lamp;

a switch controller coupled to the switch and configured to operate the switch to activate the full or reduced power states of the lamp.

2. The modular lamp controller of claim 1, further comprising an occupancy sensor coupled to the switch controller and configured to generate a signal indicating the presence of an occupant within a vicinity of the lamp, the switch controller operating the switch based upon the signal.

3. A modular lamp controller for dimming a high intensity discharge lamp based upon occupancy, the lamp having a port within a lamp fixture and the port being coupled to a lamp capacitor, the modular lamp controller comprising:

a housing;

a plug coupled to the housing and adapted to connect with the port;

a capacitor within the housing and coupled to the plug, the capacitor being adapted to be coupled to the lamp capacitor and being configured to reduce a power state of the lamp when the plug is attached to the port;

a switch within the housing and coupled to the capacitor, the switch defining a full and reduced power state of the lamp;

an occupancy sensor within the housing and coupled to the switch, the occupancy sensor for generating a signal indicating the presence of an occupant within a monitored space;

a switch controller within the housing and coupled to the switch and occupancy sensor, the switch controller operating the switch to activate the full or reduced power state of the lamp based upon the signal; and

a power supply coupled to the occupancy sensor and the switch controller.

4. The modular lamp controller of claim 3, the capacitor adapted to be connected to the lamp capacitor in series when the plug is attached to the port.

5. The modular lamp controller of claim 3, the switch controller comprising a lamp current sensor.

6. The modular lamp controller of claim 3, the switch controller comprising a user input.

7. The modular lamp controller of claim 6, the user input comprising dip switches and a push button.

8. The modular lamp controller of claim 3, the switch controller comprising a timer.

9. The modular lamp controller of claim 8, the timer comprising a lights low timer.

10. The modular lamp controller of claim 3, the switch controller comprising a control port.

11. The modular lamp controller of claim 10, the control port comprising a four pin port including an input/output pin, a low voltage common pin, a force bright pin, and a force low pin.

12. The modular lamp controller of claim 3, the power supply using current from the lamp when the plug is attached to the port.

13. The modular lamp controller of claim 12, the power supply comprising a transformer configured to be in series with the lamp when the plug is attached to the port.

14. The modular lamp controller of claim 3, further comprising an interchangeable lens assembly coupled to the housing in operative relation to the occupancy sensor.

15. The modular lamp controller of claim 14, the interchangeable lens assembly comprising a lens housing, a lens retainer, and a lens.

16. The modular lamp controller of claim 15, at least a portion of the lens being masked.

17. The modular lamp controller of claim 3, further comprising a laser alignment tool coupled to the housing and configured to align a field of view of the occupancy sensor.

18. The modular lamp controller of claim 17, the housing comprising a recess, and the laser alignment tool comprising:

a bracket;

a clip coupled to the bracket, the clip being configured to fit into the recess to secure and position the laser alignment tool relative to the housing; and

a laser coupled to the bracket.

19. The modular lamp controller of claim 3, further comprising a mounting adapter assembly coupled to the housing.

20. The modular controller of claim 19, the mounting adapter assembly comprising:

a jam nut; and

a mounting adapter comprising internal threads for connecting to a mounting pipe, external threads for locating the jam nut, and a step configured to revolve around an axis of the mounting adapter, the step being configured to rotatably lock the housing.

21. The modular lamp controller of claim 3, further comprising a test button coupled to the housing and configured to test the lamp when the plug is attached to the port.

22. A modular lamp controller for dimming a high intensity discharge lamp based upon occupancy, the lamp having a port within a lamp fixture and the port being coupled to a lamp capacitor, the modular lamp controller comprising:

a housing;

a plug coupled to the housing and being adapted to connect to the port;

a capacitor within the housing and coupled to the plug, the capacitor being configured to be coupled in series with the lamp capacitor and being configured to reduce a power state of the lamp when the plug is attached to the port;

a switch within the housing and coupled to the capacitor, the switch defining a full and reduced power state of the lamp;

an occupancy sensor within the housing and coupled to the switch, the occupancy sensor for generating a signal indicating the presence of an occupant within a monitored space;

a switch controller within the housing and coupled to the switch and occupancy sensor, the switch controller operating the switch to activate the full or reduced power state of the lamp based upon the signal; and

a power supply coupled to the occupancy sensor and switch controller, the power supply operating using current from the lamp when the plug is attached to the port;

an interchangeable lens assembly coupled to the housing in operative relation to the occupancy sensor; and

a mounting adapter assembly coupled to the housing and configured to mount and lock the modular lamp controller into position.

23. The modular lamp controller of claim 22, further comprising a laser alignment tool coupled to the housing and configured to align a field of view of the occupancy sensor.

24. The modular lamp controller of claim 22, the switch controller comprising a lamp current sensor.

25. The modular lamp controller of claim 22, the switch controller comprising a user input.

26. The modular lamp controller of claim 25, the user input comprising dip switches and a push button.

27. The modular lamp controller of claim 22, the switch controller comprising a timer.

28. The modular lamp controller of claim 27, the timer comprising a lights low timer.

29. The modular lamp controller of claim 22, the switch controller comprising a control port.

30. The modular lamp controller of claim 29, the control port comprising a four pin port including an input/output pin, a low voltage common pin, a force bright pin, and a force low pin.

31. An occupancy-based light dimming system, comprising:

a high discharge lamp having a lamp fixture and a lamp capacitor;

a port within the lamp fixture, the port being coupled to the lamp capacitor; and

a modular lamp controller for dimming the high intensity discharge lamp, comprising;

a plug configured to attach to the port;

a capacitor configured to couple to the lamp capacitor and configured to reduce a power state of the lamp when the plug is attached to the port;

a switch coupled to the capacitor and configured to define a full and reduced power state of the lamp;

an occupancy sensor configured to generate a signal indicating the presence of an occupant within a vicinity of the lamp;

a switch controller coupled to the switch and occupancy sensor and configured to operate the switch to activate the full or reduced power state of the lamp based upon the signal; and

a power supply coupled to the occupancy sensor and switch controller.

32. The system of claim 31, the modular controller further comprising a housing and a laser alignment tool adapted to be coupled to the housing and configured to align a field of view of the occupancy sensor.

33. The system of claim 31, the modular controller further comprising a housing and a mounting adapter assembly coupled to the housing and configured to mount and lock the modular lamp controller into position.

34. The system of claim 31, further comprising a shorting plug configured to attach to the port.

35. The system of claim 31, the modular lamp controller further comprising a housing and a test button coupled to the housing and configured to test the lamp when the plug is attached to the port.

36. A method for dimming a high intensity discharge lamp based upon occupancy, comprising:

attaching a plug of a modular lamp controller to a corresponding port within a fixture of the lamp to place a first capacitor within the lamp in series with a second capacitor within the modular lamp controller;

detecting the presence of an occupant within a vicinity of the lamp; and

reducing the power of the lamp using the second capacitor if occupancy is not detected; and

maintaining full power of the lamp if occupancy is detected.

37. The method of claim 36, further comprising aligning the occupancy sensor with a laser alignment tool.

38. The method of claim 36, further comprising mounting the modular lamp controller with a mounting adapter assembly.

39. The method of claim 36, further comprising testing the modular lamp controller by reducing power of the lamp momentarily if the modular lamp controller is working properly.

40. The method of claim 39, the reducing power of the lamp momentarily not affecting a warm-up of the lamp.
