1. An electrochromic rearview mirror for a motor vehicle comprising;

  • (a) a first substantially transparent front substrate having a first and a second surface and coated with a substantially transparent conductive electrode coating on its second surface;

    (b) a rear substrate having a third and a fourth surface, said rear substrate positioned in spaced-apart relationship with said front substrate and with the third surface of said rear substrate opposing the second surface of said front substrate;

    (c) a partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector disposed on the third surface of said rear substrate;

    (d) a seal positioned toward a peripheral edge of each of said front substrate and said rear substrate and forming a cavity therebetween;

    (e) an electrochromic medium disposed in said cavity and contacting said substantially transparent conductive electrode coating of said front substrate and said partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector disposed on the third surface of said rear substrate;

    (f) said mirror reflector comprising at least one metal layer, said mirror reflector reflecting at least about 55% of visible light incident thereon;

    (g) a display device disposed behind said fourth surface of said rear substrate such that light emitted by said display device passes through said rear substrate, through said partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector, through said substantially transparent conductive electrode coating and through said front substrate when said display device is electrically powered; and

    (h) said rear substrate with said partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector disposed on the third surface thereof having a visible light transmission in the range from about 1% transmission to about 30% transmission.
