Abstract

This invention relates to isolated nucleic acid fragments encoding aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases and particulary lsoleucyl-, lysyl-, phenylalanyl- and prolyl-tRNA synthetases from Zea mays, Oryza sativa, Glycine max and Tritium aestivum. The invention also relates to the construction of a chimeric gene encoding all or a portion of the aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase, in sense or antisense orientation, wherein expression of the chimeric gene results in production of altered levels of the aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase in a transformed host cell.

Claims

1. An isolated polynucleotide comprising:

(a) a nucleotide sequence encoding a polypeptide having lysyl-tRNA synthetase activity, wherein the polypeptide has an amino acid sequence of at least 90% sequence identity, based on the Clustal alignment method, when compared to SEQ ID NO;

or

(b) a full-length complement of the nucleotide sequence of (a).

2. The polynucleotide of claim 1, wherein the polypeptide has an amino acid sequence of at least 95% sequence identity, based on the Clustal alignment method, when compared to SEQ ID NO:

3. The polynucleotide of claim 1, wherein the nucleotide sequence comprises SEQ ID NO:

4. The polynucleotide of claim 1, wherein the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide comprises SEQ ID NO:

5. A chimeric gene comprising a polynucleotide of claim 1, operably linked to a regulatory sequence.

6. A vector comprising a polynucleotide of claim 1.

7. A method for transforming a cell comprising transforming a cell with a polynucleotide of claim 1.

8. A cell comprising a chimeric gene of claim 5.

9. A method for producing a plant comprising transforming a plant cell with a chimeric gene of claim 5, and regenerating a plant from the transformed plant cell.

10. A plant comprising a chimeric gene of claim 5.

11. A seed comprising a chimeric gene of claim 5.
