Abstract

The present invention relates to the use of peracid esters for improving surface wetting during the disinfection of surfaces and to synergistic antimicrobial combinations of peracid esters with further components.

Claims

1. A method of disinfecting and/or cleaning a surface, the method comprising a step of applying a formulation to a surface, the formulation comprising at least one peracid ester corresponding to the following general formula:

CO₃H

where R is an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and x is a number from 1 to 4, at least one hydrotrope, at least one fatty acid containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms, and at least one surfactant foam carrier component.

The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the step of applying comprises providing a longer surface contact time on non-horizontal surfaces by comparison with the use of identical molar quantities of the corresponding peracid alone or in combination with equivalent molar quantities of the corresponding alcohol.

3. The method claimed in claim 1, wherein R is a methyl group.

4. The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the formulation comprises one or more peracid esters selected from persuccinic acid monomethyl ester, perglutaric acid monomethyl ester or peradipic acid monomethyl ester.

5. The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the formulation comprises 0.0001 to 15% by weight of one or more peracid ester, based on the formulation as a whole.

6. The method claimed in claim 5, wherein the formulation contains 0.1 to 5% by weight of one or more peracid ester, based on the formulation as a whole.

7. The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the formulation additionally comprises 1 to 50% by weight of hydrogen peroxide, based on the formulation as a whole.

8. The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the formulation additionally contains 0.1 to 25% by weight of at least one non-esterified peracid, based on the formulation as a whole.

9. The method claimed in claim 8, wherein the non-esterified peracid present in the formulations is selected from peracetic acid, perpropionic acid, persuccinic acid, perglutaric acid, peradipic acid, ω

-phthalimidoperoxyhexanic acid, perfatty acids containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms per molecule or mixtures of these peracids.

10. The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the formulation additionally comprises 5 to 50% by weight, based on the formulation as a whole, of at least one organic acid which is not a peracid nor is it a fatty acid containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms per molecule.

11. The method claimed in claim 10, wherein the organic acid present in the formulation is selected from acetic acid, propionic acid, succinic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, ω

-phthalimidoperoxyhexanic acid, or mixtures of these acids.

12. The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the formulation additionally comprises at least one component with complexing properties for polyvalent metal ions.

13. The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the surfactant foam carrier component is an amine oxide derivative stable to oxidizing agents.

14. The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the formulation is provided in the form of an aqueous solution, gel, emulsion, paste, dispersion, powder, granules, flakes, beads, tablets, block-like shaped bodies or extrudate.

15. The method claimed in claim 1, further comprising a step of diluting the formulation with water before the step of applying.

16. The method claimed in claim 15, wherein the dilution factor is between 10 and 10,000.

17. The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the step of applying comprises applying the formulation to the surface by immersion and/or by utensils selected from paintbrushes, sponges, rollers, cloths, rags, brushes, wipers, rubber, mops, flat mop heads or sprayers.

18. The method claimed in claim 1 wherein the step of applying comprises cleaning and disinfecting the surface.

19. The method claimed in claim 1 wherein the step of applying comprises disinfecting reusable and disposable containers made of glass, cardboard and/or plastics.

20. The method claimed in claim 1 wherein the step of applying a formulation to a surface result in an aseptic or sterile packaging for microbiologically sensitive foods.

21. The method claimed in claim 20, further comprising a step of filling the packaging with microbiologically sensitive products.

22. The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the surface comprises a surface present in a sterile packaging environment selected from the group of pipes, tanks, machines, conveyor belts, installations, rinsers, and container production units.
