Abstract

A method is disclosed for remote monitoring of a premises, comprising the steps of operatively coupling a geographically remote client to a security system server which is capable of authenticating a user of the remote client, operatively coupling the remote client to a security gateway which is capable of managing the monitoring of the premises, activating a signal at the premises for notifying an occupant at the premises that remote monitoring is occurring, and transferring information between the security gateway and the remote client. The transfer of information between the security gateway and the remote client is controlled by the user of the remote client. The security gateway may be operably coupled to at least one camera at the premises and to at least one audio station at the premises.

Claims

1. For a security system for remote monitoring of a premises by a user of a remote client, a security gateway comprising:

means for monitoring one or more portions of said premises, said means for monitoring one or more portions of said premises including a plurality of monitoring device configured to collect audio and/or video data;

means for associating a first sensor with a first subset of said plurality of monitoring devices; and

means for associating a second sensor with a second subset of said plurality of monitoring devices; and

means for capturing and recording audiovisual information for use in evaluating an alarm condition detected by said first sensor, said captured and recorded audiovisual information comprised of;

(1) pre-alarm audiovisual information acquired by said first subset of said plurality of monitoring devices associated with said first sensor prior to said first sensor entering into said alarm condition;

(2) post-alarm audiovisual information acquired by said first subset of said plurality of monitoring devices associated with said first sensor subsequent to said first sensor entering into said alarm condition; and

(3) non-alarm audiovisual information acquired by said second subset of said plurality of monitoring devices associated with said second sensor subsequent to said second sensor detecting a non-alarm event and prior to said first sensor entering into said alarm condition.

2. The security gateway of claim 1, wherein said security gateway further comprises a controller capable of performing building automation control functions.

3. The security gateway of claim 1, wherein said security gateway further comprises means for streaming data in substantially real-time from said security gateway to a remotely-located monitoring client, coupled to said security gateway, via a network.

4. The security gateway of claim 1, wherein said security gateway further comprises means for providing substantially real-time synchronized audio and video communication with said remote client.

5. The security gateway of claim 1, and further comprising means for managing the monitoring of one or more portions of said premises.

6. For a security system for remote monitoring of a premises by a user of a remote client, a security gateway comprising:

means for monitoring one or more portions of said premises, said means for monitoring one or more portions of said premises including a plurality of monitoring device configured to collect audio and/or video data;

means for associating a first sensor with a first subset of said plurality of monitoring devices;

means for associating a second sensor with a second subset of said plurality of monitoring devices;

means for capturing and recording audiovisual information for use in evaluating an alarm condition detected by said first sensor, said captured and recorded audiovisual information comprised of;

(1) pre-alarm audiovisual information acquired by said first subset of said plurality of monitoring devices associated with said first sensor prior to said first sensor entering into said alarm condition;

(2) post-alarm audiovisual information acquired by said first subset of said plurality of monitoring devices associated with said first sensor subsequent to said first sensor entering into said alarm condition; and

(3) non-alarm audiovisual information acquired by said second subset of said plurality of monitoring devices associated with said second sensor subsequent to said second sensor detecting a non-alarm event and prior to said first sensor entering into said alarm condition;

means for streaming live video and/or audio data to said remote client; and

means for generating, in response to said streaming means streaming live video and/or audio data to said remote client, an audiovisual signal at said premises for notifying an occupant at said premises that said remote client is conducting remote monitoring of said premises.

7. The security gateway of claim 6 and further comprising means for managing the monitoring of one or more portions of said premises.

8. A security gateway for a security system which allows remote monitoring of a premises by a user of a remote client, said security gateway comprising:

a video module, said video module configured to receive video signals from a first video camera associated with a first sensor and a second video camera associated with a second sensor, said first video camera, said first sensor, said second video camera and said second sensor all forming part of said security system;

said video module further configured to cache video data, received from said first video camera and said second video camera, in a first memory;

said video module further configured to store said cached video data from said first video camera in a second memory in response to said first sensor detecting an alarm event; and

said video module further configured to store said cached video data from said second video camera in said second memory in response to;

(a) said second sensor detecting a non-alarm event; and

(b) said first sensor detecting an alarm event within a pre-determined time period subsequent to said second sensor detecting said non-alarm event.

9. The security gateway of claim 8, wherein said video module is further configured to cache said video data received from said first video camera and said video data received from said second video camera in said first memory in response to an arming of said security system.

10. The security gateway of claim 9 wherein said video module is further configured to discard said video data from said first and second video cameras cached in response to said arming of said security system if said first sensor fails to enter into said alarm condition within a pre-determined time period after commencing caching of said video data was from said first and second video cameras.

11. The security gateway of claim 10, and further comprising:

an alarm control panel coupled to said video module, said alarm control panel monitoring the operational state of said video module;

wherein said video module is coupled to receive said data from said first sensor and said second sensor via said alarm control panel.

12. The security gateway of claim 11, and further comprising:

an audio module coupled to said video module;

said video module further configured to cache audio data, received from said audio module, in said first memory and to store said cached audio data in said second memory in response to said security system entering into said alarm condition in response to said determination of said occurrence of said alarm event.

13. The security gateway of claim 10 and further comprising:

an alarm control panel coupled to said video module and said audio module, said alarm control panel monitoring the operational state of said video module and said audio module;

wherein said video module is coupled to receive said data from said alarm sensor via said alarm control panel.

14. The security gateway of claim 13, and further comprising:

means for establishing a connection between said security gateway and a network;

said video module further configured to exchange data and command signals with remotely-located components of said security system over said network.

15. The security gateway of claim 13, and further comprising:

a communications interface configured for serving as a gateway to a network, said communications interface coupled to said video module;

said video module further configured to exchange data and command signals with remotely-located components of said security system via said communications interface and said network.

16. The security gateway of claim 15, and further comprising:

an audio module coupled to said video module;

said video module further configured to cache audio data, received from said audio module, in said first memory and to store said cached audio data in said second memory in response to said security system entering into said alarm condition in response to said determination of said occurrence of said alarm event.

17. The security gateway of claim 16, and further comprising:

an alarm control panel coupled to said video module, said audio module and said communication interface;

wherein said video module is coupled to receive said data from said alarm sensor via said alarm control panel.

18. The security gateway of claim 17, wherein said alarm control panel is further coupled to a first one of said remotely-located components of said security system via the PSTN.

19. The security gateway of claim 8, wherein said video module is further configured to, in the event that said first sensor fails to detect an alarm event within said pre-determined time period after said second sensor detects said non-alarm event, discard, from said first memory, said cached video data related to said second sensor detecting said non-alarm event.

20. The security gateway of claim 8 and further comprising means for managing the monitoring of one or more portions of said premises.

21. A dual-use gateway suitable for use as part of both a security system and as part of a lifestyle monitoring system for a premises, said dual-use gateway comprising:

a first module configured to receive video data from a video camera;

said first module further configured to store said video data, received from said video camera, as part of said security system usage of said dual-use gateway;

as part of said security monitoring usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to provide access of said stored video data to a remote security system server forming part of said security system in response to a determination, by said first module, of an alarm condition;

as part of said lifestyle monitoring usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to prohibit access of said stored video data to said remote security system server in the absence of said determination, by said first module, of said alarm condition;

said first module further configured to stream substantially real-time video data, received from said video camera, to a remote client, coupled to said first module via a network, as part of said lifestyle monitoring usage of said dual-use gateway;

as part of said security system usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to stream said substantially real-time video data, received from said video camera to said remote security system server in response to said determination, by said first module, of said alarm condition;

as part of said lifestyle monitoring usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to prohibit streaming of said substantially real-time video data, received from said video camera to said remote security system server in the absence of said determination, by said first module, of said alarm condition; and

as part of said security system usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to prohibit streaming of said substantially real-time video data, received from said video camera, to said remote client in response to said determination, by said first module, of said alarm condition.

22. The dual-use gateway of claim 21, wherein:

said first module is further configured to receive audio data from an audio station;

said first module further configured to store said audio data, received from said audio station, as part of said security system usage of said dual-use gateway;

as part of said security monitoring usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to provide access of said stored audio data to said remote security system in response to said determination, by said first module, of said alarm condition;

as part of said lifestyle monitoring usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to prohibit access of said stored audio data to said remote security system server in the absence of said determination, by said first module, of said alarm condition;

said first module further configured to stream substantially real-time audio data, received from said audio station, to said remote client as part of said lifestyle monitoring usage of said dual-use gateway;

as part of said security system usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to stream said substantially real-time audio data, received from said audio station, to said remote security system server in response to said determination, by said first module, of said alarm condition;

as part of said lifestyle monitoring usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to prohibit streaming of said substantially real-time audio data, received from said audio, to said remote security system server in the absence of said determination, by said first module, of said alarm condition; and

as part of said security system usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to prohibit streaming of said real-time audio data, received from said audio station, to said remote client in response to said determination, by said first module, of said alarm condition.

23. The dual-use gateway of claim 21, and further comprising;

a second module configured to receive data from a sensor, said second module coupled to said first module;

wherein;

as a first part of said security system usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module caches said video data, received from said video camera, in a first memory in response to an arming of said sensor;

as a second part of said security system usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module stores said cached video data in a second memory in response to a triggering of said armed sensor; and

as a third part of said security system usage of said gateway, said first module discards said cached video data in response to a failure of said sensor to trigger within a pre-determined time period after said video data was cached.

24. The dual-use gateway of claim 23, and further comprising:

a third module coupled to said system bus, said third module configured to receive audio data from an audio station;

said dual-use gateway further configured to store said audio data, received from said audio station, as part of said security system usage of said dual-use gateway; and

said dual-use gateway further configured to stream said audio data, received from said audio station, to said remote client as part of said lifestyle monitoring usage of said dual-use gateway.

25. The dual-use gateway of claim 24, wherein said audio data is stored in said first module.

26. The dual-use gateway of claim 25, wherein said audio data is stored in said third module.

27. The dual-use gateway of claim 26, wherein, as part of said lifestyle usage of said dual-use gateway, said audio station is configured for two-way audio communications with said remote client.

28. The dual-use gateway of claim 21, and further comprising means for managing the monitoring of one or more portions of said premises.

29. A dual-use gateway suitable for use as part of a security system and as part of a lifestyle monitoring system for a premises, said dual-use gateway comprising:

a first module configured to receive video data from a video camera;

said first module further configured to store said video data, received from said video camera, as part of said security system usage of said dual-use gateway;

as part of said security monitoring usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to provide access of said stored video data to a remote security system server forming part of said security system in response to a determination, by said first module, of an alarm condition;

as part of said lifestyle monitoring usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to prohibit access of said stored video data to said remote security system server in the absence of said determination, by said first module, of said alarm condition;

said first module further configured to stream substantially real-time video data, received from said video camera, to a remote client, coupled to said first module via a network, as part of said lifestyle monitoring usage of said dual-use gateway;

as part of said security system usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to stream said substantially real-time video data, received from said video camera to said remote security system server in response to said determination, by said first module, of said alarm condition;

as part of said lifestyle monitoring usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to prohibit streaming of said substantially real-time video data, received from said video camera to said remote security system server in the absence of said determination, by said first module, of said alarm condition;

as part of said security system usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to prohibit streaming of said substantially real-time video data, received from said video camera, to said remote client in response to said determination, by said first module, of said alarm condition; and

as part of said lifestyle monitoring usage of said dual-use gateway, said first module further configured to generate, in response to said streaming of said substantially real-time video data, received from said video camera, to said remote client, a remote surveillance notification signal for notifying an occupant at said premises that said remote client is conducting remote monitoring of said premises.

30. The dual-use gateway of claim 29 and further comprising means for managing the monitoring of one or more portions of said premises.
