Abstract

Apparatus is provided for separating non-magnetic mineral values from a source containing magnetic material and non magnetic material. The apparatus includes first and second conveyers in overlying relation which counter-rotate relative to one another. One of the conveyers includes a magnetic assembly which cooperates with paddles on the upper conveyer to progressively isolate values from magnetic material. Multiple stages are provided for intermittent magnetic interactions such that the non-magnetic materials are effectively isolated from the magnetic materials.

Claims

1. An apparatus for separating non-magnetic mineral values from a source material containing magnetic material and non-magnetic material, the apparatus comprising:

a frame;

a non-magnetic material collection channel mounted to the frame for collecting non-magnetic material;

a feed mechanism for supplying the source material to the collection channel;

retaining members mounted within the collection channel to retain the collected non-magnetic material;

a fluid connection on the collection channel configured to connect a source of fluid to the collection channel, the fluid transporting the source material fed from the feed mechanism along the retaining members for retaining non-magnetic material and flushing the magnetic material contained in the source material away from the retaining members; and

a magnetic separation assembly mounted adjacent the collection channel for exerting magnetic fields on the source material transported by the fluid to repel the non-magnetic material in the source material against a flow of the fluid transporting the source material to assist collection and retaining of the non-magnetic material in the retaining members.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the magnetic separation assembly includes a frame for supporting discrete sections of magnets, the sections of magnets being mounted to the frame in spaced longitudinal relation forming alternating areas of presence and absence of a magnetic field, permitting the magnetic fields to intermittently act on the source material to progressively separate the magnetic material from the non-magnetic material for transportation along the retaining members, whereby the non-magnetic material carried by the fluid is efficiently collected and retained in the retaining members in the absence of magnetic material.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the magnetic separation assembly includes a rotatable magnetic cross belt disposed adjacent an upstream end of the retaining members.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the magnetic separation assembly includes a magnetic bar disposed at a downstream underside of the collection channel.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a removal channel adjacent the collection channel for removal of the non-magnetic material retained in the retaining members.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the frame is configured such that the inclination of the collection channel is adjustable.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the apparatus is configured to be collapsible.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the retaining members are non-magnetic.

9. The apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the retaining members comprise a reticulated mat.

10. The apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the retaining members comprise a mat having Hungarian riffles.

11. The apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the retaining members comprise a mat having a diamond pattern.

12. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the collection channel comprises an upstream channel and a downstream channel such that the non-magnetic material retained in the retaining members within the upstream channel is capable of being removed separately from the non-magnetic material retained in the retaining members within the downstream channel.

13. An apparatus for separating non-magnetic mineral values from a source material containing magnetic material and non-magnetic material, the apparatus comprising:

a bed having an introduction end and a discharge end;

a first bed channel extending between the introduction and discharge ends of the bed along a first direction;

a fluid connection on the bed configured to connect a source of fluid to the first bed channel, the fluid connection disposed at the introduction end of the bed introducing a fluid flow into the first bed channel and flowing to the discharge end of the bed;

a feeder disposed adjacent to the fluid connection for introducing the source material into the fluid flow;

a first mesh area disposed between the discharge end of the bed and the feeder, the first mesh area disposed at a downstream direction from the feeder with regard to the fluid flow; and

a magnetic separator disposed between an upstream edge of the first mesh area and the feeder for exerting magnetic fields upon the source material in the fluid flow to repel the non-magnetic material of the source material in the fluid flow against the fluid flow to collect and retain the non-magnetic material in the fluid flow within the first mesh area.

14. The apparatus according to claim 13, further comprising:

a magnetic cross belt disposed between the feeder and the magnetic separator,

wherein the magnetic cross belt extends along a second direction perpendicular to the first direction to encircle upper and lower regions of the first bed channel.

15. The apparatus according to claim 14, wherein the magnetic cross belt rotates along the second direction to attract the magnetic material within the fluid flow at an interior surface of the magnetic cross belt.

16. The apparatus according to claim 13, wherein the magnetic separator includes a plurality of magnets mounted in a carriage along a second direction perpendicular to the first direction.

17. The apparatus according to claim 16, wherein the carriage is movable between the introduction and discharge ends of the bed along the first direction.

18. The apparatus according to claim 17, further comprising:

a magnetic cross belt extending along the second direction and disposed between the feeder and the magnetic separator,

wherein the carriage is movable between an edge of the first mesh area at the upstream direction of the first mesh area and the magnetic cross belt.

19. The apparatus according to claim 13, further comprising:

a second bed channel disposed parallel to the first bed channel and terminating at the discharge end of the bed; and

a collector disposed at the discharge end of the bed.

20. The apparatus according to claim 19, wherein the first bed channel includes a system for rotating the first bed channel above the second bed channel to transfer the non-magnetic material retained in the first mesh area into the second bed channel.

21. The apparatus according to claim 20, wherein the non-magnetic material transferred into the second bed channel is collected in the collector.

22. The apparatus according to claim 13, wherein the first mesh area includes a diamond pattern.

23. The apparatus according to claim 22, wherein the diamond pattern includes a plurality of polygonal-shaped recess regions.

24. The apparatus according to claim 23, wherein opposing corners of the polygonal-shaped recess regions are aligned with one of the first and second directions.

25. The apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the opposing corners of the polygonal-shaped recess regions aligned with the first direction include an upstream corner disposed at the upstream direction and a downstream corner disposed at a downstream direction opposite to the upstream direction.

26. The apparatus according to claim 25, wherein the collected and retained non-magnetic material is collected and retained in the upstream corner of each of the polygonal-shaped recess regions.

27. The apparatus according to claim 26, wherein magnetic materials contained within the fluid flow are collected at the discharge end of the bed.

28. The apparatus according to claim 13, further comprising:

at least one additional auxiliary magnet disposed beneath a second mesh area disposed between the discharge end of the bed and an edge of the first mesh area disposed at the downstream direction.

29. The apparatus according to claim 28, wherein the at least one additional auxiliary magnet exerts magnetic fields upon the source material in the fluid flow to attract and collect the magnetic material of the source material in the fluid flow in the second mesh area.

30. The apparatus according to claim 13, wherein the magnetic separator includes a plurality of magnets spaced apart from each other along the first direction, each of the magnets extend along a second direction perpendicular to the first direction.

31. The apparatus according to claim 30, wherein the magnets impart magnet fields upon the non-magnetic material in the source material within the fluid flow to reduce the flow of the non-magnetic material within the fluid flow.

32. The apparatus according to claim 31, wherein the non-magnetic material reduced within the fluid flow are collected and retained within the first mesh area.

33. An apparatus for separating non-magnetic mineral values from a source material containing magnetic material and non-magnetic material, the apparatus comprising:

a bed channel;

a fluid connection on the bed channel configured to connect a source of fluid to the bed, the fluid connection including a fluid source for introducing a fluid flow into the bed channel;

a feeder disposed adjacent to the fluid source for introducing the source material into the fluid flow;

a mesh area disposed along a downstream direction from the feeder with regard to the fluid flow for receiving the source material within the fluid flow;

a magnetic separator disposed between the feeder and the mesh area for exerting magnetic fields upon the source material in the fluid flow to reduce the flow of the non-magnetic material within the fluid flow and collect and retain the non-magnetic material within the mesh area.

The apparatus according to claim 33, wherein the mesh area includes a plurality of polygonal-shaped recess regions having opposing corners aligned parallel to the fluid flow, and the collected and retained non-magnetic material is collected and retained in one of the opposing corners disposed at an upstream direction opposite to the downstream direction of the fluid flow.

35. An apparatus for separating non-magnetic mineral values from a source material containing magnetic material and non-magnetic material, the apparatus comprising:

a bed channel;

a fluid connection on the bed channel configured to connect a source of fluid to the bed channel, the fluid connection including a fluid source for introducing a fluid flow into the bed channel;

a feeder disposed adjacent to the fluid source for introducing the source material into the fluid flow;

a mesh area disposed at a downstream direction from the feeder with regard to the fluid flow for receiving the fluid flow across a surface of the mesh area, the mesh area including a plurality of recess regions aligned with the fluid flow;

a magnetic separator disposed between the feeder and the mesh area for exerting magnetic fields upon the source material in the fluid flow to collect and retain the non-magnetic material within corner portions of the recess regions disposed at an upstream direction opposite to the downstream direction of the fluid flow.

36. The apparatus according to claim 35, further comprising:

a magnetic cross belt extending across the downstream direction of the fluid flow,

wherein the magnetic separator is movable between the mesh area and the magnetic cross belt.

37. An apparatus for separating non-magnetic mineral values from a source material containing magnetic material and non-magnetic material, the apparatus comprising:

a bed channel;

a fluid connection on the bed channel configured to connect a source of fluid to the bed channel, the fluid connection including a fluid source for introducing a fluid flow into the bed channel;

a feeder disposed adjacent to the fluid source for introducing the source material into the fluid flow;

a mesh area disposed along a downstream direction from the feeder with regard to the fluid flow for receiving the fluid flow across a surface of the mesh area, the mesh area including a plurality of recess regions aligned with the fluid flow; and

a magnetic separator disposed between the feeder and the mesh area for exerting varying magnetic fields upon the source material in the fluid flow to repel the non-magnetic material within the source material.

38. The apparatus according to claim 37, wherein the repulsion of the non-magnetic material is caused by induction currents created by varying magnetic fields of the magnetic separator.

39. The apparatus according to claim 38, wherein the magnetic separator includes a plurality of spaced-apart magnets that provide the varying magnetic fields.
