1. A method of writing a target data value in a non-volatile memory, comprising:

  • performing one or more program-verify cycles using a first verify mode having a single comparison to a first-mode reference value; and

    performing one or more program-verify cycles using a second verify mode, the program-verify cycles using a second verify mode including;

    altering the state of a storage element in the non-volatile memory;

    verifying a parameter indicative of the resultant state of the storage element against a second-mode reference value indicative of the target data value by performing a plurality of independent comparisons to compare the parameter to the second-mode reference value indicative of the target data value; and

    determining whether to further alter the state of the storage element in response to said verifying.
