Abstract

A digital device operatively coupled to a computer network including first and second networked components receives unitary data stream having N fields of data and an associated Nth field label, and distributes the contents of each of the N fields to one of the first and second networked devices in response to the N field labels included in the unitary data stream, where N is a positive integer. A method for operating the digital device is also described.

Claims

1. A digital device operatively coupled to a computer network, said network comprising operatively coupling the digital device to a first network component and operatively coupling the digital device to a second network component, the digital device receiving a unitary data stream comprising a set of N fields each field having a respective Nth field label, and transferring the contents of a first subset of the N fields to the first network component and transferring the contents of a second subset of the N fields to the second network component in response to the N field labels included in the unitary data stream, where N is a positive integer greater than 1, the first and second subsets are not both equal to the full set N, and the first and second subsets each contain at least one member.

2. The digital device as recited in claim 1, wherein the digital device receives a plurality of data packets via a communications channel and assembles the received data packets into the unitary data stream.

3. The digital device as recited in claim 1, wherein the digital device establishes the fields in the first and second subsets in response to N instructions generated by the digital device based on an instruction set and the N field labels included in the unitary data stream.

4. The digital device as recited in claim 3, wherein the instruction set is stored on the digital device.

5. The digital device as recited in claim 3, wherein the instruction set is included in the unitary data stream.

6. The digital device as recited in claim 1, wherein the digital device is a server responsive to specialized software.

7. The digital device as recited in claim 1, wherein the N field labels follow extensible markup language (XML) schemas.

8. The digital device as recited in claim 1, wherein the unitary data stream comprises an insurance claim form.

9. The digital device as recited in claim 1, wherein N−

1 of the N fields contain text data and the Nth one of the N fields contains a digital attachment.

10. The digital device as recited in claim 1, wherein at least two of the N fields include a Document Identification Number (DIN).

11. The digital device as recited in claim 1, wherein each of the N fields includes the same, unique Document Identification Number (DIN), to thereby permit the corresponding unitary data stream to be reconstructed from outputs of the first and second networked components.

12. The digital device as recited in claim 1, wherein one of the first and second networked components is a mainframe computer.

13. The digital device as recited in claim 12, wherein the mainframe computer receives only ones of the N fields containing text data.

14. The digital device as recited in claim 1, wherein the digital device communicates with the first and second networked components via the Internet.

15. A digital device operatively coupled to a computer network, said network comprising operatively coupling the digital device to a first network component and operatively coupling the digital device to a second network component, the digital device receiving a unitary data stream comprising a set of N fields arranged in a predetermined order, and transmitting contents of a first subset of the N fields to the first network component and transmitting contents of a second subset of the N fields to the second network component, the fields included in said first and second subsets being determined by their position in said predetermined order of the set of N fields in the unitary data stream, where N is a positive integer greater than 1, the first and second subsets are not both equal to the full set N, and the first and second subsets each contain at least one member.

16. The digital device as recited in claim 15, wherein the digital device receives a plurality of data packets via a communications channel and assembles the received data packets into the unitary data stream.

The digital device as recited in claim 15, wherein the digital device reads an instruction set and, responsive to the instruction set, establishes the first and second subsets of fields, transfers the contents of the first subset of fields to the first network device, and transfers the contents of the second subset of fields to the second network device.

18. The digital device as recited in claim 16, wherein the instruction set is stored on the digital device.

19. The digital device as recited in claim 16, wherein the instruction set is included in the unitary data stream.

20. The digital device as recited in claim 15, wherein the digital device is a server responsive to specialized software.

21. The digital device as recited in claim 15, wherein the unitary data stream comprises an insurance claim form.

22. The digital device as recited in claim 15, wherein at least two of the N fields include a Document Identification Number (DIN).

23. The digital device as recited in claim 15, wherein each of the N fields includes the same, unique Document Identification Number (DIN), to thereby permit the corresponding unitary data stream to be reconstructed from outputs of the first and second networked components.

24. The digital device as recited in claim 15, wherein one of the first and second networked components is a mainframe computer.

25. The digital device as recited in claim 24, wherein the mainframe computer receives only ones of the N fields containing text data.

26. The digital device as recited in claim 15, wherein the digital device communicates with the first and second networked components via the Internet.

27. A method for operating a digital device operatively coupled to first and second networked components, comprising:

receiving a unitary data stream including N fields of data;

parsing the unitary data stream to determine a first portion of the N fields to be routed to the first networked component and a second portion of the N fields to be routed to the second networked component; and

routing the first and second portions of the N fields to the first and second networked components, respectively,

where N is a positive integer.

28. The method as recited in claim 27, wherein:

the digital device includes a parsing device which parses the unitary data stream responsive to an instruction set; and

the method further comprises assembling the unitary data stream from a plurality of received data packets.

29. The method as recited in claim 28, wherein:

the instruction set is incorporated in the unitary data stream; and

the method further comprises extracting the instruction set from the unitary data stream.

30. The method as recited in claim 27, wherein the first networked component comprises a mainframe computer.

31. The method as recited in claim 27, wherein the second networked component instantiates a graphical user interface (GUI).

32. The method as recited in claim 27, wherein the digital device comprises a server running specialized software.

33. The method as recited in claim 27, wherein the parsing step comprises parsing the unitary data stream in accordance with extensible markup language (XML) schemas to determine a first portion of the N fields to be routed to the first networked component and a second portion of the N fields to be routed to the second networked component.

34. The method as recited in claim 27, wherein at least two of the N fields includes a Document Identification Number (DIN).

35. The method as recited in claim 27, wherein each of the N fields includes a Document Identification Number (DIN) to thereby permit the unitary data stream to be reconstructed from respective outputs of the first and second networked components.

36. The method as recited in claim 27, wherein the unitary data stream comprises an insurance claim form.

37. A server computer operatively coupled in a networked system for processing electronic messages, the networked system comprising:

a plurality of network components coupled to the server computer;

wherein the server computer is configured though software to customize incoming electronic messages, each customized electronic message containing at least a portion of an incoming electronic message;

wherein the incoming electronic messages contain identifiable fields with at least one field containing an electronic message attachment; and

wherein the server computer, for at least a first network component and a first incoming electronic message, is responsive to its software, an identity of the first network component and information contained in the first incoming electronic message to generate a first customized electronic message by removing at least one electronic message attachment from the first incoming electronic message and to transmit the first customized electronic message to the first network component without the at least one electronic message attachment.

38. The server computer of claim 37, wherein the first customized electronic message contains an indication that at least one electronic message attachment of the first incoming electronic message was not sent to the first network component.

39. The server computer of claim 38, wherein the indication that at least one electronic message attachment of the first incoming electronic message was not sent to the first network component further facilitates locating the at least one electronic message attachment of the first incoming electronic message that was not sent to the first network component.

40. The server computer of claim 37, wherein the server computer, upon receiving the first incoming electronic message, is responsive to its software, information contained in the first incoming electronic message, and an identity of a second network component to generate a second customized electronic message from the first incoming electronic message and to transmit the second customized electronic message to the second network component, wherein the second customized electronic message contains at least one electronic message attachment not contained in the first customized electronic message.

41. The server computer of claim 40, wherein the first customized electronic message and the second customized electronic message each contain an identifier and wherein the identifier in the first customized electronic message is the same as the identifier in the second customized electronic message.

42. A server having specialized software for causing the server to perform a process, the process comprising:

receiving an incoming first file comprising a set of N identifiable fields; and

using identities of the identifiable fields of the first file, copying contents of a first subset of the set of N identifiable fields to correlated fields of a second file.

43. The server of claim 42, wherein the identities of the fields of the set of N identifiable fields are field names.

44. The server of claim 42, wherein the process of copying contents from the first file to the second file is based solely on the field identities in the first and second files.

45. The server of claim 42, wherein the correlated fields of the second file have field identities corresponding to the field identities of the first subset of the set of N identifiable fields.

46. The server of claim 42, wherein a format of the first file is different than a format of the second file.

47. The server of claim 42, wherein the process further comprises transmitting the second file to an external computer system for processing.

48. The server of claim 47, further comprising:

wherein the first file is received from an external computer system;

wherein the external computer system providing the first file lacks information of the field identities of the second file;

wherein the external computer system receiving the second file lacks information of the field identities of the first file; and

wherein the server'"'"'s specialized software contains information on the field identities of both the first and second files.

49. The server of claim 42, wherein the process of copying the contents of a first subset of the set of N identifiable fields to correlated fields of a second file occurs in response to the first file being opened.

50. A method of processing files formed of identifiable fields, the method comprising:

receiving an incoming first file comprising a set of N identifiable fields; and

using identities of the identifiable fields of the first file, copying contents of a first subset of the set of N identifiable fields to correlated fields of a second file.

51. The method of claim 50, wherein the identities of the identifiable fields are field names.

52. The method of claim 51, wherein the correlated fields of the second file have field identities corresponding to the field identities of the first subset of the set of N identifiable fields.

53. The method of claim 50, wherein a format of the first file is different than a format of the second file.

54. The method of claim 50, further comprising:

transmitting the second file to an external computer system for processing, wherein the external computer system is different than a computer system used to generate or receive the first file.

55. The method of claim 54, further comprising:

receiving the first file from an external computer system lacking information of the field identities of the second file; and

transmitting the second file to an external computer system lacking information of the field identities of the first file.

56. The method of claim 50, further comprising:

generating the first file using a customizable form, wherein members of the set of N identifiable fields are determined in response to entry of data into a first field of the customizable form.

57. A server computer having specialized software for causing the server to perform a process, the process comprising:

receiving an incoming first file comprising a set of N identifiable fields; and

using identities of the identifiable fields of the first file, executing a transaction by copying the contents of a first subset of the set of N identifiable fields to correlated fields of a software application independent of the specialized software.

58. The server computer of claim 57, wherein the independent software application is on a second computer operationally connected to the server computer.

59. The server computer of claim 58, wherein the process further comprises:

receiving the incoming first file from a third computer, wherein the first file is generated by an independent software application;

wherein the independent software application generating the first file lacks information regarding the correlated fields of the independent software application on the second computer;

wherein the independent software application on the second computer lacks information regarding the field identities of the set of N identifiable fields of the first file; and

wherein the server computer'"'"'s specialized software contains information on the field identities of both the set of N identifiable fields of the first file and the correlated fields of the independent software application on the second computer.

60. A server system having specialized software for causing the server system to perform a process, the process comprising:

receiving a unitary data stream comprising a set of N identifiable fields with N equal to or greater than two, wherein at least one of the fields contains a digital image and wherein the unitary data stream contains data that uniquely identifies a source of the at least one digital image; and

using identities of the identifiable fields of the unitary data stream, executing a transaction by copying a first subset of the set of N identifiable fields to correlated fields in a legacy software application, wherein the first subset does not contain any digital images of the unitary data stream.

61. The server system of claim 60, wherein the process further comprises copying the contents of a second subset of the set of N identifiable fields to correlated fields of a first file.

62. The server system of claim 61, wherein the process further comprises transmitting the first file to a second computer operationally connected to the server system.
