Abstract

Methods, apparatus, and business techniques are disclosed for use in distributed communication systems comprising a plurality of communication protocols. In one embodiment a first air interface is used to initiate communication between a wireless client and a remote server at least partially using a first wireless access point. The server sends the wireless client a stub of a distributed object. The stub is used to instantiate an object class. The object class defines an interface that the remote client can use to communicate with the remote server using an upper layer interface. The distributed object stub also provides an implementation of a software radio configuration for a set of lower protocol layers in a second air interface. The wireless client can thereby communicate with a second wireless access point using said second air interface protocol. Exemplary embodiments of the present invention are disclosed that focus on toll-tag and electronic-commerce related highway systems, distributed federated wireless access systems, and wide area wireless system capacity augmentation.

Claims

1. For use in a system comprising a mobile unit, a cellular network and a wireless local area network coupled to an Internet, wherein at least one of the mobile unit, the cellular network and the wireless local area network communicates via a packet switched data network at a transport layer or above with a remote server system, the wireless local area network communicates voice media information over the Internet using a voice-over-Internet protocol, and a voice telephony call is in progress between the mobile unit and a remote voice telephony endpoint at least partially via a first connection between the mobile unit and the cellular network, a method comprising:

receiving at the remote server system an indication that the mobile unit is in a coverage area of the wireless local area network;

determining whether a second connection between the mobile unit and the wireless local area network is superior to the first connection, in accordance with the application of an optimization strategy that takes into account information obtained from at least one database that is accessible to the remote server system; and

sending from the remote server system to at least one of the mobile unit, the wireless local area network and the cellular network, an indication to switch at least a portion of the voice telephony call in progress from the first connection to the second connection, in the event that it is determined that the second connection is superior, to thereby facilitate a seamless call handoff of the at least a portion of the voice telephony call in progress from the cellular network to the Internet, via the wireless local area network.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the Internet is a member of the group consisting of the ubiquitous global Internet, a corporate intranet, an intranet, a virtual private network, and a virtual private network that is embedded within another network.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one database includes subscriber-specific information.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the subscriber-specific information includes at least one user preference.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one database includes information concerning one or more dynamic network operating conditions related to the wireless local area network.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the one or more dynamic network operating conditions include current network loading conditions of the wireless local area network.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein the one or more dynamic network operating conditions include a currently available quality of service of the wireless local area network.

8. The method of claim 5, wherein the one or more dynamic network operating conditions include a currently available connection speed of the wireless local area network.

9. The method of claim 5, wherein the at least one database includes fee data posted on behalf of a service provider associated with the wireless local area network.

10. The method of claim 5, wherein the at least one database comprises subscriber-specific information to include at least one user preference related to at least one condition under which a user of the mobile unit would prefer the seamless call handoff to be performed.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one database includes information concerning one or more dynamic network operating conditions related to the wireless local area network and the cellular network.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the one or more dynamic network operating conditions include current network loading conditions of each of the wireless local area network and the cellular network.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the one or more dynamic network operating conditions include a currently available quality of service of each of the wireless local area network and the cellular network.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the one or more dynamic network operating conditions include a currently available connection speed of each of the wireless local area network and the cellular network.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein the at least one database includes fee data associated with each of the wireless local area network and the cellular network.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one database includes information concerning one or more dynamic network operating conditions related to a plurality of candidate wireless local area networks potentially available for the seamless call handoff.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the information concerning one or more dynamic network operating conditions is provided by different network service providers associated with the plurality of candidate wireless local area networks.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein the information concerning one or more dynamic network operating conditions is provided by a single network service provider which operates all of the candidate wireless local area networks.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein the one or more dynamic network operating conditions include current network loading conditions of each of the plurality of candidate wireless local area networks.

20. The method of claim 16, wherein the one or more dynamic network operating conditions include a currently available quality of service of each of the plurality of wireless local area networks.

21. The method of claim 16, wherein the one or more dynamic network operating conditions include a currently available connection speed of each of the plurality of candidate wireless local area networks.

22. The method of claim 16, wherein the at least one database includes fee data associated with each of the plurality of candidate wireless local area networks, wherein the fee data is posted in an online marketplace server system accessible by the remote server system.

23. The method of claim 1, wherein a plurality of candidate wireless local area networks are potentially available for the seamless call handoff, depending upon a current location of the mobile unit.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the remote server system maintains information related to level of usage by the mobile of each of the plurality of candidate wireless local area networks.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein at least two of the plurality of candidate wireless local area networks are operated by different service providers, and the remote server system further maintains financial information which facilitates revenue sharing amongst the different service providers.

26. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the cellular network and the wireless local area network are operated by different service providers; and

the remote server system maintains financial and billing information on behalf of the different service providers related to usage by the mobile unit of the cellular network and the wireless local area network.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the remote server system apportions revenues between the different service providers based upon the financial and billing information.

28. The method of claim 1, wherein the remote server system maintains information concerning level of usage by the mobile unit of the wireless local area network.

29. The method of claim 1, wherein the remote server system acts as an independent agent on behalf of a user of the mobile unit to secure an optimized service across a pool of service providers.

30. The method of claim 1, wherein the cellular network and the wireless local area network are operated by the same service provider.

31. The method of claim 1, wherein the cellular network and the wireless local area network are operated by the same service provider and the Internet is an intranet operated by the service provider.

32. The method of claim 1, wherein the cellular network and the wireless local area network are operated by different service providers.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein the remote server system manages billing to users and revenue sharing between the different service providers.

34. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

maintaining in the remote server system a description of software resources available to the mobile unit to identify a subset of one or more executable software modules that are not already present in the mobile unit and that need to be loaded into the mobile unit in order to implement a communication protocol feature provided by the wireless local area network; and

sending the one or more executable software modules to the mobile unit.

35. The method of claim 1, wherein a portion of the voice telephony call carried at least partially via the cellular network uses a circuit switched cellular telephony protocol.

36. The method of claim 1, wherein a portion of the voice telephony call carried at least partially via the cellular network uses a packet switched voice telephony protocol.

37. For use in a system comprising a mobile unit, a cellular network and a wireless local area network coupled to an Internet, wherein at least one of the mobile unit, the cellular network and the wireless local area network communicates via a packet switched data network at a transport layer or above with a remote server system, the wireless local area network communicates voice media information over the Internet using a voice-over-Internet protocol, and a voice telephony call is in progress between the mobile unit and a remote voice telephony endpoint at least partially via a first connection between the mobile unit and the cellular network, a method comprising:

sending from at least one of the mobile unit, the cellular network, and the wireless local area network an indication that the mobile unit is in a coverage area of the wireless local area network;

receiving at the remote server system the indication that the mobile unit is in a coverage area of the wireless local area network;

determining whether a second connection between the mobile unit and the wireless local area network is superior to the first connection, in accordance with the application of an optimization strategy that takes into account information obtained from at least one database that is accessible to the remote server system; and

sending from the remote server system to at least one of the mobile unit, the wireless local area network and the cellular network, an indication to switch at least a portion of the voice telephony call from the first connection to the second connection, in the event that it is determined that the second connection is superior; and

in response to the indication, automatically switching at least a portion of the voice telephony call in progress from the first connection to the second connection, in a manner transparent to a user of the mobile unit, to thereby provide a seamless call handoff of the at least a portion of the voice telephony call in progress from the cellular network to the Internet, via the wireless local area network.

38. The method of claim 37, wherein:

the Internet is a member of the group consisting of the ubiquitous global Internet, a corporate intranet, an intranet, a virtual private network, and a virtual private network that is embedded into another network; and

the database includes user specific data, dynamic data indicative of changing network conditions, and economic data.

39. For use in a system comprising a mobile unit, a first wireless local area network and a second wireless local area network each coupled to an Internet, wherein at least one of the mobile unit, the first wireless local area network and the second wireless local area network communicates via a packet switched data network at a transport layer or above with a remote server system, the first and second wireless local area network each communicate voice media information over the Internet using a voice-over-Internet protocol, and a voice telephony call is in progress between the mobile unit and a remote voice telephony endpoint at least partially via a first connection between the mobile unit and the first wireless local area network, a method comprising:

receiving at the remote server system an indication that the mobile unit is in a coverage area of the second wireless local area network;

determining whether a second connection between the mobile unit and the second wireless local area network is superior to the first connection, in accordance with the application of an optimization strategy that takes into account information obtained from at least one database that is accessible to the remote server system; and

sending from the remote server system to at least one of the mobile unit, the first wireless local area network and the second wireless local area network, an indication to switch at least a portion of the voice telephony call in progress from the first connection to the second connection, in the event that it is determined that the second connection is superior, to thereby facilitate a seamless call handoff of the at least portion of the voice telephony call in progress from the first wireless local network to the second wireless local area network.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein the Internet is a member of the group consisting of the ubiquitous global Internet, a corporate intranet, an intranet, a virtual private network, and a virtual private network that is embedded into another network.

41. The method of claim 39, wherein the at least one database comprises subscriber-specific information.

42. The method of claim 41, wherein the subscriber-specific information comprises at least one user preference.

43. The method of claim 39, wherein the at least one database comprises information concerning one or more dynamic network operating conditions related to a plurality of candidate networks potentially available for the seamless call handoff, depending upon a current location of the mobile unit, including at least the first and second wireless local area networks.

44. The method of claim 43, wherein the first and second wireless local area networks are operated by different service providers.

45. The method of claim 44, wherein the at least one database includes fee data posted on behalf of the different service providers associated with the first and second wireless local area networks.

46. The method of claim 45, wherein the fee data is posted in an online marketplace server system accessible by the remote server system.

47. The method of claim 43, wherein the one or more dynamic network operating conditions include current network loading conditions of each of the first and second wireless local area networks.

48. The method of claim 47, wherein the one or more dynamic network operating conditions include currently available quality of service of each of the first and second wireless local area networks.

49. The method of claim 47, wherein the one or more dynamic network operating conditions include currently available connection speed of each of the first and second wireless local area networks.

50. The method of claim 39, wherein the server system acts as an independent agent on behalf of a user of the mobile unit to secure an optimized service across a pool of service providers.

51. The method of claim 39, wherein the first and second wireless local area networks are operated by the same service provider.

52. The method of claim 39, wherein the first and second wireless local area networks are operated by the same service provider and the Internet is an intranet operated by the service provider.

53. The method of claim 39, wherein the first and second wireless local area networks are operated by different service providers.

54. The method of claim 53, wherein the remote server system manages billing to users and revenue sharing between the different service providers.

55. The method of claim 39, wherein the remote server system maintains financial data relating to the level of usage by the mobile unit of each of the first and second wireless local area networks, to thereby facilitate revenue sharing between the different service providers.

56. The method of claim 39, wherein the remote server system manages revenue sharing between the different service providers.

57. The method of claim 39, further comprising:

maintaining in the remote server system a description of software resources available to the mobile unit to identify a subset of one or more executable software modules that are not already present in the mobile unit and that need to be loaded into the mobile unit in order to implement a communication protocol feature provided by the second wireless local area network; and

sending the one or more executable software modules to the mobile unit.

58. For use in a system comprising a mobile unit, a first wireless local area network and a second wireless local area network each coupled to an Internet, wherein at least one of the mobile unit, the first wireless local area network and the second wireless local area network communicates via a packet switched data network at a transport layer or above with a remote server system, the first and second wireless local area network each communicate voice media information with the Internet using a voice-over-Internet protocol, and a voice telephony call is in progress between the mobile unit and a remote voice telephony endpoint at least partially via a first connection between the mobile unit and the first wireless local area network, a method comprising:

sending from at least one of the mobile unit, the first wireless local area network, and the second wireless local area network an indication that the mobile unit is in a coverage area of the second wireless local area network;

receiving at the remote server system the indication that the mobile unit is in a coverage area of the second wireless local area network;

determining whether a second connection between the mobile unit and the second wireless local area network is superior to the first connection, in accordance with the application of an optimization strategy that takes into account information obtained from at least one database that is accessible to the remote server system;

sending from the remote server system to at least one of the mobile unit, the first wireless local area network and the second wireless local area network, an indication to switch at least a portion of the voice telephony call in progress from the first connection to the second connection, in the event that it is determined that the second connection is superior; and

in response to the indication, automatically switching the at least a portion of the voice telephony call in progress from the first connection to the second connection, using the voice-over-Internet telephony protocol both before and after the switching, in a manner transparent to a user of the mobile unit, to thereby provide a seamless call handoff of the at least portion of the voice telephony call in progress from the first wireless local network to the second wireless local area network.

59. The method of claim 58, wherein:

the Internet is a member of the group consisting of the ubiquitous global Internet, a corporate intranet, an intranet, a virtual private network, and a virtual private network that is embedded within another network; and

the database includes user specific data, dynamic data indicative of changing network conditions, and economic data.
