Abstract

The invention is directed to compositions used for treating Central Nervous System (CNS) disorders. In addition, the invention provides convenient methods of treatment of a CNS disorder. Furthermore, the invention provides methods of treating sleep disorders using compositions that remain active for a discrete period of time to reduce side effects. More specifically, the invention is directed to the compositions and use of derivatized, e.g., ester or carboxylic acid derivatized, antihistamine antagonists for the treatment of sleep disorders.

Claims

1. A method of treating a sleep disorder in a subject, wherein the sleep disorder is selected from insomnia, hypersomnia, narcolepsy, sleep apnea syndrome, parasomnia, restless leg syndrome, and circadian rhythm abnormality sleep disorder, comprising administering to the subject in need of treatment for the sleeping disorder an amount of a compound effective for treating the sleep disorder, wherein said compound is selected from the group consisting of:

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the subject is a human.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the sleep disorder is circadian rhythm abnormality sleep disorder.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the circadian rhythm abnormality sleep disorder is selected from the group consisting of jet lag, shift-work disorders, and delayed or advanced sleep phase syndrome.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the sleep disorder is insomnia.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein insomnia is treated in the subject by effecting at least one action selected from the group consisting of decreasing the time to sleep onset, increasing the average sleep bout length, and increasing the maximum sleep bout length.
