Abstract

An approach for managing power consumption of network devices includes determining whether one or more state change criteria for a network device are satisfied. Examples of state change criteria include, without limitation, whether the network device needs to be operating in a different operational state to perform a specified function and whether a specified function has been completed. If the one or more state change criteria for the network device are satisfied, then the network device is signaled over a communications network to cause the network device to change operational states. According to one embodiment of the invention, the signaling causes the network device to change from a first operational state to a second operational state where the network device consumes a different amount of power when operating in the second operational state relative to when the network device is operating in the first operational state.

Claims

1. A method for managing power consumption of a network device wherein the network devices is configured with a plurality of operational states, the method comprising:

determining whether the network device should change from a first operational state in the plurality of operational states to a second operational state in the plurality of operational states based on a request for the network device to perform a first function, wherein the plurality of operational states reflects a hierarchy of operational states wherein the network device consumes a different amount of power in each operational state in the hierarchy of operational states;

receiving, over a communications network, a request to change from a first operational state to a second operational state in the plurality of operational states;

transitioning from the first operational state to the second operational state in response to receiving the request;

wherein in the first operational state, power is provided to one or more electronic components in the network device to allow the one or more electronic components to process the request to change from the first operational state to the second operational state and power is not provided to a mechanical module in the network device, and

wherein in the second operational state, power is provided to the one or more electronic components in the network device to allow the one or more electronic components to perform one or more additional functions and power is not provided to the mechanical module in the network device; and

sending a message after transitioning from the first operational state to the second operational state.

The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the step of determining whether the network device should change from a first operational state in the plurality of operational states to a second operational state in the plurality of operational states based on a request for the network device to perform a first function, further comprises determining whether the network device has completed the first function.

3. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the request for the network device to perform a first function includes the network device receiving a request for service.

4. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the request for the network device to perform a first function includes a request for one or more facility management functions to be performed on the network device.

5. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the request for the network device to perform a first function includes a request to retrieve one or more operating parameters associated with the network device.

6. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the request for the network device to perform a first function includes a request to retrieve a report from the network device.

7. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the network device is a multi-function peripheral device.

8. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the network device is a printer.

9. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the network device is a copier.

10. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the step of determining whether the network device should change from a first operational state in the plurality of operational states to a second operational state in the plurality of operational states further comprises determining whether the network device needs to be operating in the second operational state to perform the first function.

11. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein transitioning from the first operational state to the second operational state includes placing one or more electrical components into a powered state.

12. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein transitioning from the first operational state to the second operational state includes starting up one or more electrical components.

13. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the message in response to a transition from the first operational state to the second operational state is a confirmation that the network device successfully transitioned.

14. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the message in response to a transition from the first operational state to the second operational state is a report generated by the network device.

15. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein:

in a third operational state, power is provided to both the one or more electronic components and the mechanical module to allow the mechanical module to operate at a first level of operation.

16. The method as recited in claim 15, wherein:

in a fourth operational state, power is provided to both the one or more electronic components and the mechanical module to allow the mechanical module to operate at a second level of operation, wherein the mechanical module consumes relatively more power when operating at the second level of operation relative to when the mechanical module is operating at the first level of operation.

17. The method as recited in claim 15, wherein transitioning from the second operational state to the third operational state includes waking the mechanical module from a sleep state.

18. The method as recited in claim 15, wherein transitioning from the second operational state to the third operational state includes starting up the mechanical module.

19. The method as recited in claim 15, wherein transitioning from the second operational state to the third operational state includes placing the mechanical module into a ready state.

20. A computer-readable medium for managing power consumption of a network device wherein the network devices is configured with a plurality of operational states, the computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform the steps of:

determining whether the network device should change from a first operational state in the plurality of operational states to a second operational state in the plurality of operational states based on a request for the network device to perform a first function, wherein the plurality of operational states reflects a hierarchy of operational states wherein the network device consumes a different amount of power in each operational state in the hierarchy of operational states;

receiving, over a communications network, a request to change from a first operational state to a second operational states in the plurality of operational states;

transitioning from the first operational state to the second operational state in response to receiving the request;

wherein in the first operational state, power is provided to one or more electronic components in the network device to allow the one or more electronic components to process the request to change from the first operational state to the second operational state and power is not provided to a mechanical module in the network device, and

wherein in the second operational state, power is provided to the one or more electronic components in the network device to allow the one or more electronic components to perform one or more additional functions and power is not provided to the mechanical module in the network device; and

sending a message after transitioning from the first operational state to the second operational state.

A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 20, wherein the step of determining whether the network device should change from a first operational state in the plurality of operational states to a second operational state in the plurality of operational states based on a request for the network device to perform a first function further comprises determining whether the network device has completed the first function.

22. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 20, wherein the request for the network device to perform a first function includes the network device receiving a request for service.

23. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 20, wherein the request for the network device to perform a first function includes a request for one or more facility management functions to be performed on the network device.

24. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 20, wherein the request for the network device to perform a first function includes a request to retrieve one or more operating parameters associated with the network device.

25. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 20, wherein the request for the network device to perform a first function includes a request to retrieve a report from the network device.

26. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 20, wherein the network device is a multi-function peripheral device.

27. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 20, wherein the network device is a printer.

28. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 20, wherein the network device is a copier.

A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 20, wherein the step of determining whether the network device should change from a first operational state in the plurality of operational states to a second operational state in the plurality of operational states further comprises determining whether the network device needs to be operating in the second operational state to perform the first function.

30. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 20, wherein transitioning from the first operational state to the second operational state includes placing one or more electrical components into a powered state.

31. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 20, wherein transitioning from the first operational state to the second operational state includes starting up one or more electrical components.

32. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 20, wherein the message in response to a transition from the first operational state to the second operational state is a confirmation that the network device successfully transitioned.

33. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 20, wherein the message in response to a transition from the first operational state to the second operational state is a report generated by the network device.

34. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 20, wherein:

in a third operational state, power is provided to both the one or more electronic components and the mechanical module to allow the mechanical module to operate at a first level of operation.

35. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 34, wherein:

in a fourth operational state, power is provided to both the one or more electronic components and the mechanical module to allow the mechanical module to operate at a second level of operation, wherein the mechanical module consumes relatively more power when operating at the second level of operation relative to when the mechanical module is operating at the first level of operation.

36. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 34, wherein transitioning from the second operational state to the third operational state includes waking the mechanical module from a sleep state.

37. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 34, wherein transitioning from the second operational state to the third operational state includes starting up the mechanical module.

38. A computer-readable medium as recited in claim 34, wherein transitioning from the second operational state to the third operational state includes placing the mechanical module into a ready state.

39. An apparatus for managing power consumption of a network device wherein the network devices is configured with a plurality of operational states, the apparatus comprising a memory carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform the steps of:

determining whether the network device should change from a first operational state in the plurality of operational states to a second operational state in the plurality of operational states based on a request for the network device to perform a first function, wherein the plurality of operational states reflects a hierarchy of operational states wherein the network device consumes a different amount of power in each operational state in the hierarchy of operational states;

receiving, over a communications network, a request to change from a first operational state to a second operational state in the plurality of operational states;

transitioning from the first operational state to the second operational state in response to receiving the request;

wherein in the first operational state, power is provided to one or more electronic components in the network device to allow the one or more electronic components to process the request to change from the first operational state to the second operational state and power is not provided to a mechanical module in the network device, and

wherein in the second operational state, power is provided to the one or more electronic components in the network device to allow the one or more electronic components to perform one or more additional functions and power is not provided to the mechanical module in the network device; and

sending a message after transitioning from the first operational state to the second operational state.

An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein the step of determining whether the network device should change from a first operational state in the plurality of operational states to a second operational state in the plurality of operational states based on a request for the network device to perform a first function further comprises determining whether the network device has completed the first function.

41. An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein the request for the network device to perform a first function includes the network device receiving a request for service.

42. An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein the request for the network device to perform a first function includes a request for one or more facility management functions to be performed on the network device.

43. An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein the request for the network device to perform a first function includes a request to retrieve one or more operating parameters associated with the network device.

44. An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein the request for the network device to perform a first function includes a request to retrieve a report from the network device.

45. An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein the network device is a multi-function peripheral device.

46. An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein the network device is a printer.

47. An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein the network device is a copier.

An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein the step of determining whether the network device should change from a first operational state in the plurality of operational states to a second operational state in the plurality of operational states further comprises determining whether the network device needs to be operating in the second operational state to perform the first function.

49. An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein transitioning from the first operational state to the second operational state includes placing one or more electrical components into a powered state.

50. An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein transitioning from the first operational state to the second operational state includes starting up one or more electrical components.

51. An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein the message in response to a transition from the first operational state to the second operational state is a confirmation that the network device successfully transitioned.

52. An apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein the message in response to a transition from the first operational state to the second operational state is a report generated by the network device.

53. A apparatus as recited in claim 39, wherein:

in a third operational state, power is provided to both the one or more electronic components and the mechanical module to allow the mechanical module to operate at a first level of operation.

54. A apparatus as recited in claim 53, wherein:

in a fourth operational state, power is provided to both the one or more electronic components and the mechanical module to allow the mechanical module to operate at a second level of operation, wherein the mechanical module consumes relatively more power when operating at the second level of operation relative to when the mechanical module is operating at the first level of operation.

55. An apparatus as recited in claim 53, wherein transitioning from the second operational state to the third operational state includes waking the mechanical module from a sleep state.

56. An apparatus as recited in claim 53, wherein transitioning from the second operational state to the third operational state includes starting up the mechanical module.

57. An apparatus as recited in claim 53, wherein transitioning from the second operational state to the third operational state includes placing the mechanical module into a ready state.
