Abstract

A geographical web browser allows a user to navigate a network application such as the Word Wide Web by physically navigating in geographical coordinates and roaming through coverage areas of cellular base stations, wireless LANs, microcells, and other such broadcast domains. A mobile unit communicates with a network server via an air interface that supports wireless packet data. A network server uses a set of user preferences to filter a set of server-side information in accordance with a user'"'"'s interest. A content-selective information filter performs a network server-side search to identify content that matches the user'"'"'s preferences and automatically downloads the information to the mobile unit based on a geographic event.

Claims

1. A mobile communication system comprising:

a mobile unit configured to wirelessly communicate with a remote network server via a first network connection to an Internet via a base station of a cellular communications network that provides packet data access services to the mobile unit; and

a public access wireless local area network station operative to wirelessly transmit at least one unsolicited broadcast packet into a local coverage area, wherein the unsolicited broadcast packet contains an identifier;

wherein the mobile unit is configured to receive the unsolicited broadcast packet, to compare the identifier to one or more packet filter parameters, to selectively cause at least one packet to be transmitted to the remote network server via the first network connection when the comparison generates a positive result, and, to subsequently communicate with the remote network server via a second network connection to the Internet via the public access wireless local area network station.

2. The mobile communication system of claim 1, further comprising the cellular communications network.

The mobile communication system of claim 1, wherein the public access wireless local area network station uses an air interface that uses a low-power radio channel and the local coverage area is substantially smaller than a packet data access coverage area provided by the base station of the cellular network.

4. The mobile communication system of claim 3, wherein the local coverage area has a radius of less than one quarter mile.

5. The mobile communication system of claim 1, wherein the one or more packet filter parameters include a user-configured preference.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the remote network server downloads one or more configuration parameters to the mobile unit to set at least one of the one or more packet filter parameters.

7. The mobile communication system of claim 1, wherein the first and second network connections are used at different times to support a single virtual session between the mobile unit and the remote network server.

8. The mobile communication system of claim 7, wherein the virtual session is placed into an inactive state substantially when the first network connection is terminated, and is then placed into an active state after the second network connection is established.

9. The mobile communication system of claim 7, wherein the virtual session is a virtual communication session used to maintain a session layer connectivity between the mobile unit and the remote server.

10. The mobile communication system of claim 7, wherein the virtual session is a virtual application session used to maintain an application layer connectivity between the mobile unit and the remote server.

11. The mobile communication system of claim 1, wherein the remote network server provides a service which is a member of the group consisting of a geographical web site server and a navigation server.

12. The mobile communication system of claim 1, wherein the remote network server provides a service which is a member of the group consisting of a voice telephony server and an email server.

13. The mobile communication system of claim 1, wherein the Internet is the global ubiquitous Internet.

14. The mobile communication system of claim 1, wherein the identifier is an indication of an information class.

15. The mobile communication system of claim 1, wherein the identifier includes a set of bits to be matched to a packet filter bit mask.

16. The mobile communication system of claim 1, wherein the identifier comprises an indication that the broadcast packet is a navigation packet.

17. The mobile communication system of claim 1, wherein the identifier includes a network address.

18. For use in a mobile communication environment in which a mobile unit is configured to wirelessly communicate with a remote network server both via a first network connection to an Internet via a base station of a cellular communications network that provides wireless packet data services and via a second network connection to the Internet via a public access wireless local area network station, a method comprising:

wirelessly transmitting from the public access wireless local area network station at least one unsolicited broadcast packet into a local coverage area, wherein the unsolicited broadcast packet contains an identifier;

receiving at the mobile unit the unsolicited broadcast packet;

comparing in the mobile unit the identifier to one or more packet filter parameters, and selectively causing at least one packet to be transmitted to the remote network server via the first network connection when the comparison generates a positive result; and

after the at least one packet has been transmitted to the remote network server via the first network connection, the mobile unit communicating with the remote network server via the second network connection.

24. The method of claim 18, wherein the public access wireless local area network station uses an air interface that uses a low-power radio channel and the local coverage area is substantially smaller than a packet data access coverage area provided by the base station of the cellular network.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the local coverage area has a radius of less than one quarter mile.

26. The method of claim 18, wherein the one or more packet filter parameters include a user-configured preference.

27. The method of claim 18, wherein the remote network server downloads one or more configuration parameters to the mobile unit to set at least one of the one or more packet filter parameters.

28. The method of claim 18, wherein the first and second network connections are used at different times to support a single virtual session between the mobile unit and the remote network server.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the virtual session is placed into an inactive state substantially when the first network connection is terminated, and is then placed into an active state after the second network connection is established.

30. The method of claim 28, wherein the virtual session is a virtual communication session used to maintain a session layer connectivity between the mobile unit and the remote server.

31. The method of claim 28, wherein the virtual session is a virtual application session used to maintain an application layer connectivity between the mobile unit and the remote server.

32. The method of claim 18, wherein the remote network server provides a service which is a member of the group consisting of a voice telephony server and an email server.

33. The method of claim 18, wherein the Internet is the global ubiquitous Internet.

34. The method of claim 18, wherein the identifier is an indication of an information class.

35. The method of claim 18, wherein the identifier includes a set of bits to be matched to a packet filter bit mask.

36. The method of claim 18, wherein the identifier comprises an indication that the broadcast packet is a navigation packet.

37. The method of claim 18, wherein the identifier includes a network address.

19. Mobile communications apparatus comprising:

a cellular radio transceiver configured for communications with a cellular base station via a cellular communications air interface protocol that supports wireless packet data connectivity, wherein the cellular base station is configured to provide a first network connection to an Internet, and the mobile unit is configured to communicate with a remote network server via the first network connection;

a wireless local area network packet transceiver configured for communications with a public access wireless local area network station;

a network interface module coupled to the wireless local area network packet transceiver, the network interface module operative to receive one or more unsolicited broadcast packets from the public access wireless local area network station, wherein the broadcast packet includes an identifier; and

a packet filter configured with one or more packet filter parameters, wherein the packet filter is operative to compare at least one of the one or more packet filter parameters to the identifier, and to selectively generate an indication when the comparison generates a positive result, and, after the indication has been generated, to communicate with the remote network server via a second network connection to the Internet via the public access wireless local area network station.

The mobile communications apparatus of claim 19, wherein the public access wireless local area network station uses an air interface that uses a low-power radio channel and the local coverage area is substantially smaller than a packet data access coverage area provided by the base station of the cellular network.

39. The mobile communications apparatus of claim 38, wherein the local coverage area has a radius of less than one quarter mile.

40. The mobile communications apparatus of claim 19, wherein the one or more packet filter parameters include a user-configured preference.

41. The mobile communications apparatus of claim 19, wherein the remote network server downloads one or more configuration parameters to the mobile unit to set at least one of the one or more packet filter parameters.

42. The mobile communications apparatus of claim 19, wherein the first and second network connections are used at different times to support a single virtual session between the mobile unit and the remote network server.

43. The mobile communications apparatus of claim 42, wherein the virtual session is placed into an inactive state substantially when the first network connection is terminated, and is then placed into an active state after the second network connection is established.

44. The mobile communications apparatus of claim 42, wherein the virtual session is a virtual communication session used to maintain a session layer connectivity between the mobile unit and the remote server.

45. The mobile communications apparatus of claim 42, wherein the virtual session is a virtual application session used to maintain an application layer connectivity between the mobile unit and the remote server.

46. The mobile communications apparatus of claim 19, wherein the remote network server provides a service which is a member of the group consisting of a voice telephony server and an email server.

47. The mobile communications apparatus of claim 19, wherein the Internet is the global ubiquitous Internet.

48. The mobile communications apparatus of claim 19, wherein the identifier is an indication of an information class.

49. The mobile communications apparatus of claim 19, wherein the identifier includes a set of bits to be matched to a packet filter bit mask.

50. The mobile communications apparatus of claim 19, wherein the identifier comprises an indication that the broadcast packet is a navigation packet.

51. The mobile communications apparatus of claim 19, wherein the identifier includes a network address.

20. A mobile communication system comprising:

a mobile unit configured to wirelessly communicate with a remote network server via a first network connection to an Internet via a base station of a cellular communications network that provides packet data access services to the mobile unit; and

a public access wireless local area network station operative to wirelessly transmit at least one unsolicited broadcast packet into a local area coverage area; and

wherein the unsolicited broadcast packet contains an identifier, and the mobile unit is configured to download from the remote server via the first network connection at least one configuration parameter, to use the configuration parameter to set at least one packet filter parameter, to receive the at least one unsolicited broadcast packet, to compare the identifier to the at least one packet filter parameter, to selectively generate an indication when the comparison generates a positive result, and, after the indication has been generated, to communicate with the remote network server via a second network connection to the Internet via the public access wireless local area network station.

52. The mobile communication system of claim 20, wherein the first and second network connections are used at different times to support a single virtual session between the mobile unit and the remote network server.

53. The mobile communication system of claim 52, wherein the virtual session is placed into an inactive state substantially when the first network connection is terminated, and is then placed into en active state after the second network connection is established.

54. The mobile communication system of claim 52, wherein the virtual session is a virtual communication session used to maintain a session layer connectivity between the mobile unit and the remote server.

55. The mobile communication system of claim 52, wherein the virtual session is a virtual application session used to maintain an application layer connectivity between the mobile unit and the remote server.

56. The mobile communication system of claim 20, wherein the remote network server provides a service which is a member of the group consisting of a geographical web site server and a navigation server.

57. The mobile communication system of claim 20, wherein the remote network server provides a service which is a member of the group consisting of a voice telephony server and an email server.

58. The mobile communication system of claim 20, wherein the Internet is the global ubiquitous Internet.

21. For use in a mobile communication environment in which a mobile unit is configured to wirelessly communicate with a remote network server both via a first network connection to an Internet via a base station of a cellular communications network that provides wireless packet data services and via a second network connection to the Internet via a public access wireless local area network station, a method comprising:

downloading at least one configuration parameter from the remote server to the mobile unit via the first network connection;

using the configuration parameter to set at least one packet filter parameter;

wirelessly transmitting from the public access wireless local area network station at least one unsolicited broadcast packet into a local coverage area, wherein the unsolicited broadcast packet contains an identifier;

receiving at the mobile unit the unsolicited broadcast packet;

comparing in the mobile unit the identifier to the at least one packet filter parameter;

selectively indicating when the comparing generates a positive result; and

after the selectively indicating, the mobile unit communicating with the remote network server via the second network connection.

22. The method of claim 21, the method further comprising:

in response to the selectively indicating, causing at least one packet to be transferred to the remote network server via the first network connection.

59. The method of claim 21, wherein the first and second network connections are used at different times to support a single virtual session between the mobile unit and the remote network server.

60. The method of claim 59, wherein the virtual session is placed into an inactive state substantially when the first network connection is terminated, and is then placed into an active state after the second network connection is established.

61. The method of claim 59, wherein the virtual session is a virtual communication session used to maintain a session layer connectivity between the mobile unit and the remote server.

62. The method of claim 59, wherein the virtual session is a virtual application session used to maintain an application layer connectivity between the mobile unit and the remote server.

63. The method of claim 21, wherein the remote network server provides a service which is a member of the group consisting of a voice telephony server and an email server.

64. The method of claim 21, wherein the Internet is the global ubiquitous Internet.

65. The method of claim 21, wherein the identifier is an indication of an information class.

66. The method of claim 21, wherein the identifier includes a set of bits to be matched to a packet filter bit mask.

67. The method of claim 21, wherein the identifier comprises an indication that the broadcast packet is a navigation packet.

68. The method of claim 21, wherein the identifier includes a network address.

23. Mobile communications apparatus comprising:

a cellular radio transceiver configured for communications with a cellular base station via a cellular communications air interface protocol that supports wireless packet data connectivity, wherein the cellular base station is configured to provide a first network connection to an Internet, and the mobile unit is configured to communicate with a remote network server via the first network connection;

a wireless local area network packet transceiver configured for communications with a public access wireless local area network station;

a network interface module coupled to the wireless local area network packet transceiver, the network interface module operative to receive one or more unsolicited broadcast packets from the public access wireless local area network station, wherein the broadcast packet includes an identifier; and

a packet filter configured with one or more packet filter parameters that are supplied by the remote network server via the first network connection, wherein the packet filter is operative to compare at least one of the one or more packet filter parameters to the identifier, and to selectively generate an indication when the comparison generates a positive result, and, after the indication has been generated, to communicate with the remote network server via a second network connection to the Internet via the public access wireless local area network station.

69. The mobile communication system of claim 23, wherein the first and second network connections are used at different times to support a single virtual session between the mobile unit and the remote network server.

70. The mobile communication system of claim 69, wherein the virtual session is placed into an inactive state substantially when the first network connection is terminated, and is then placed into an active state after the second network connection is established.

71. The mobile communication system of claim 69, wherein the virtual session is a virtual communication session used to maintain a session layer connectivity between the mobile unit and the remote server.

72. The mobile communication system of claim 69, wherein the virtual session is a virtual application session used to maintain an application layer connectivity between the mobile unit and the remote server.

73. The mobile communication system of claim 23, wherein the remote network server provides a service which is a member of the group consisting of a geographical web site server and a navigation server.

74. The mobile communication system of claim 23, wherein the remote network server provides a service which is a member of the group consisting of a voice telephony server and an email server.

75. The mobile communication system of claim 23, wherein the Internet is the global ubiquitous Internet.

76. The mobile communication system of claim 23, wherein in response to the selectively generated indication, at least one packet is transferred to the remote network server via the first network connection.
