Abstract

A mouse with multi button functionality is disclosed. The mouse includes a housing that surrounds the internal components of the mouse. The housing includes at least a first member and a second member, each of which forms a substantial portion of the housing. The first member moves relative to the second member so as to implement at least one of the multiple button functions of the mouse.

Claims

1. A unibody mouse having multiple button functionalities, wherein all of said multiple button functionalities are incorporated into a single movable housing component of the unibody mouse, each of the button functions being implemented by moving the single movable housing component to different positions relative to a base housing component that supports the mouse on a surface, the single movable housing component being carried by and movably coupled to the base housing component so as to provide clicking actions for each of said multiple button functionalities, the single movable housing component cooperating with the base housing component to form a housing of the mouse, the housing enclosing all the electrical components of the unibody mouse, said single movable housing component having at least two degrees of freedom relative to the base housing component, the multiple DOFs being used to implement the multiple clicking actions.

2. The mouse as recited in claim 1 wherein each of said multiple button functionalities corresponds to an action on a display screen.

3. The mouse as recited in claim 1 wherein a first clicking action corresponds to a first button function and wherein a second clicking action corresponds to a second button function.

4. The mouse as recited in claim 3 wherein a third clicking action corresponds to a third button function.

5. The mouse as recited in claim 4 wherein a fourth clicking action corresponds to a fourth button function.

6. The mouse as recited in claim 1 wherein said single movable housing component is coupled to said base housing component via a combination of joints selected from pivot joints, slider joints, ball and socket joints, or flexure joints, and wherein each pivot joint represent a different pivot axis.

7. The mouse as recited in claim 1 wherein said single movable housing component pivots relative to said base housing component about a first axis and about a second axis.

8. The mouse as recited in claim 7 wherein said first axis is orthogonal to said second axis.

9. The mouse as recited in claim 8 wherein said first axis intersects a front and back side of the mouse, and wherein the second axis intersects a right and left side of the mouse.

10. The mouse as recited in claim 1 wherein each of said clicking actions has a switch associated therewith that is capable of differentiating when each of said clicking actions is actuated.

11. The mouse as recited in claim 10 wherein each of said switches is enclosed by said housing.

12. The mouse as recited in claim 10 wherein each of said switches is disposed underneath a region of the single movable housing component associated with each of said one or more clicking actions.

13. The mouse as recited in claim 10 wherein the switches are mechanical, optical or magnetic switches.

14. The mouse as recited in claim 1 wherein the housing encloses an electronic subsystem for detecting movement of the mouse along a surface, and for transmitting a signal corresponding to the detected movement to a display, the signal being used to move a cursor on the display.

15. The mouse as recited in claim 1 wherein the single movable housing component is spring biased.

16. The mouse as recited in claim 1 wherein the single movable component having a continuous surface with no separate mechanical buttons disposed therein.

17. The mouse as recited in claim 1 wherein said single movable housing component is coupled to said base housing component via multiple joints that enable different movements of the single movable housing component relative to said base housing component.

18. The mouse as recited in claim 17 wherein said multiple joints are selected from different pivot joints, slider joints, ball and socket joints, or flexure joints.

19. A mouse, comprising:

a housing for enclosing internal components of said mouse, said internal components including a plurality of switches, said housing comprising,

a base for movably supporting said mouse on a surface;

a button body coupled to said base via a pivot and flexure joint that allows said body to move to multiple positions relative to said base, wherein at least a first switch is activated when said body is moved to a first position, wherein at least a second switch is activated when said body is moved to a second position, and wherein at least a third switch is activated when said body is moved to a third position.

20. A unibody mouse, comprising:

a base that provides a platform for sliding the unibody mouse along a surface;

a mouse body movably coupled to said base, said mouse body pivoting about a first axis positioned in the center of the mouse so that the mouse body pivots from side to side and a second axis orthogonal to the first axis and positioned towards the back of the mouse so that the mouse body pivots forward between the sides, said pivoting about the first and second axes allowing said mouse body to move to a front left tilt position, a front middle tilt position and a front right tilt position relative to said base; and

a plurality of movement indicators housed within said mouse body and said base for sensing when said mouse body moves to the front left tilt position, front middle tilt position and front right tilt position relative to said base.

The unibody mouse as recited in claim 20, wherein said plurality of movement indicators comprises a first switch, a second switch and a third switch all of which are supported by the base and disposed underneath the mouse body, the first switch being positioned in the front left portion of the mouse, the second switch being positioned in the front middle portion of the mouse, the third switch being positioned in the front right portion of the mouse, wherein at least the first switch is activated when the mouse body is moved to the front left position, the second switch is activated when the mouse body is moved to the front middle position, and the third switch is activated when the mouse body is moved to the front left position.

22. The unibody mouse as recited in claim 21, wherein said first, second and third switches are configured to implement one or more on screen actions on a display when said mouse body is moved to the front left tilt, front middle tilt or front left tilt positions.

23. The unibody mouse as recited in claim 20, wherein the first axis is provided by a flexure joint, and the second axis is provided by a pivot joint.

The unibody mouse as recited in claim 20 wherein the pivoting actions are provided by a pivot flexure joint, the pivot flexure joint including a pair of pivot pins that extend from the inner surface of the button body and that matingly engage pivot supports, the pivot flexure joint also including a flexure that couples the pivot supports to an inner surface of the base.

The unibody mouse as recited in claim 20 wherein the pivoting actions are provided by a double pivot joint, the double pivot joint including an axle that extends across the body and that engages pivot supports attached to an inner surface of the button body, the double pivot joint also including a pivot pin which is attached to the axle, which extends in a direction orthogonal to the axle and which engages a pivot support attached to the base.

The unibody mouse as recited in claim 20 wherein the pivoting actions are provided by a double pivot joint, the double pivot joint including first and second pivot pins that engage first and second pivot supports, the first pivot pin being attached to the button body, the first pivot support is attached to the second pivot pin, the second pivot support being attached to the base.

The unibody mouse as recited in claim 20 wherein the pivoting actions are provided by a pivot slider joint, the pivot slider joint including a pivot pin which is attached to the button body and which engages a pivot support, the pivot slider joint also including a slider, which is attached to the pivot support and which slidably engages a slide support attached to the base.

28. The unibody mouse as recited in claim 20 wherein the pivoting actions are provided by a ball and socket joint, the ball and socket joint including a ball that is attached to the button body and a socket that is attached to the base.

29. The unibody mouse as recited in claim 20 wherein the pivoting actions are only provided by a flexure.

30. A unibody mouse, comprising:

a base having a front and rear and including a pair of flexure supports at the rear of the base, the flexure supports being positioned in an opposed relationship on opposite sides of the base, each of the flexure supports including an opening;

a mouse body movably attached to said base, the mouse body having a front and a rear that coincide with the front and the rear of the base and including pivot pins at the rear of the mouse body, the pivot pins being positioned in an opposed relationship on opposite sides of the mouse body, the pivot pins being inserted in the openings in the flexure supports thereby forming a pivot flexure joint, the pivot flexure joint facilitating pivoting movements of said mouse body relative to said base, said pivot pin allowing said mouse body to pivot about a first axis relative to said base, said flexures allowing said mouse body to pivot about a second axis relative to said base; and

a plurality of movement indicators housed within said mouse body and said base for sensing movement of said mouse body with respect to said base.

31. A unibody mouse as recited in claim 30, wherein said unibody mouse is for use with a computer, and

wherein said plurality of movement indicators operate to convert the pivoting movements of said mouse body to signals associated with performing a user-initiated action with respect to the computer.

32. A unibody mouse as recited in claim 30, further including one or more sensors housed within said mouse body and said base for sensing movement of said mouse body with respect to said base.

The unibody mouse as recited in claim 30 wherein the pivot joint allows the mouse body to swing between an unclicked position, placing the mouse body in an upright position, and a front middle clicked position, tilting the mouse body towards the front middle of the mouse, and the flexure supports allows the mouse body to swing between the unclicked position, placing the mouse body in the upright position, and front left and right clicked positions, tilting the mouse to the front left and right sides of the mouse.

34. The unibody mouse as recited in 33 further comprising a spring mechanism for biasing the mouse body in the unclicked position in a direction away from the base.

35. The unibody mouse as recited in 33 wherein the movement indicators are switches and wherein the switches are attached to a printed circuit board, and the printed circuit board is attached to the base.

36. The unibody mouse as recited in 35 wherein the mouse body is configured to engage a front right switch when the mouse body is moved to the right clicked position, a front left switch when the mouse body is moved to the left clicked position, and a front middle switch when the mouse is moved to the front middle clicked position, a bottom portion of the mouse body pushing against an actuator of the switches in order to activate the switch.

37. The unibody mouse as recited in 36 further comprising a spring mechanism for biasing the mouse body in the unclicked position in a direction away from the base.

38. The unibody mouse as recited in 37 wherein the spring mechanism is part of the front middle switch, the spring mechanism causing the actuator to push against the bottom portion of the mouse body so as to bias the mouse body in the unclicked position.

39. The unibody mouse as recited in 36 wherein the switches report three states including right click left click and middle click, and wherein the unibody mouse is configurable so as to provide one or more button functions based on these states.

40. The unibody mouse as recited in 30 wherein the movement indicators are all mechanical switches.

41. The unibody mouse as recited in 30 wherein the movement indicators are all optical switches.

42. The unibody mouse as recited in 30 wherein the movement indicators are a combination of optical and mechanical switches.

43. The unibody mouse as recited in 30 wherein the movement indicators include a switch configured to activate and deactivate when the mouse body is pivoted relative to the base, and a tilt sensor configured to measure the degree of tilt of the mouse body so as to determine when the mouse body is in a front right pivoted position, the front left pivoted position and the front middle pivoted position.
