Abstract

An ophthalmic spectacle lens comprises a front surface; a back surface; a peripheral edge; and a vision correcting area having a refractive error correction for correcting refractive error of the eye, wherein the vision correcting area'"'"'s refractive error correction is determined at least in part by a wave front analysis of the eye being corrected. Additionally, the refractive error correction corrects for non-conventional refractive error, wherein the non-conventional refractive error is a refractive error other than myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia and regular astigmatism, wherein said lens is capable of being edged into the shape of an eyeglass frame.

Claims

1. An ophthalmic spectacle lens comprising:

a vision correcting area having a refractive error correction that focuses an image of ambient light on to the retina of an eye for correcting refractive error of the eye, wherein

the vision correcting area'"'"'s refractive error correction is determined at least in part by a wave front analysis of the eye being corrected;

the refractive error correction corrects at least in part for non-conventional refractive error, wherein the non-conventional refractive error is a refractive error other than myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia and regular astigmatism;

wherein the refractive error correction is provided at least in part by a plurality of optical property variations of said lens, wherein said optical property variations are variations in the index of refraction of said lens; and

wherein said lens is capable of being edged into the shape of an eyeglass frame.

2. The lens of claim 1, wherein the refractive error correction is provided by a plurality of localized refractive power variations in said lens.

3. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens contains pixels.

4. The lens of claim 3, wherein said each individual pixel provides a predetermined optical property.

5. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens contains at least two regions of different vision correction.

6. The lens of claim 5, wherein said two regions of different vision correction are connected by a transition zone.

7. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens is capable of a prismatic shift of the image being focused.

8. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens is capable of correcting the vision of the user'"'"'s eye to better than 20/20.

9. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens is capable of correcting the vision of the user'"'"'s eye to better than 20/10.

10. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens is capable of correcting an aberration of the user'"'"'s eye.

11. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens is capable of correcting an aberration caused by ocular layer irregularities.

12. The lens of claim 1, wherein the lens comprises at least two optics joined together.

13. The lens of claim 12, wherein said one of the two optics are from the family of wafer, lens blank, semi-finished lens blank, unfinished lens blank, optical perform, finished lens.

14. The lens of claim 1, further comprising an area of index variation located within an array of pixels contained within said lens.

15. The lens of claim 1, wherein the lens is capable of being tinted.

16. The lens of claim 1, wherein the lens has a variable tint.

17. The lens of claim 1, wherein the lens is capable of being fabricated from one of a semi finished or unfinished lens blank.

18. The lens of claim 1, wherein the lens is capable of correcting for conventional refractive error being one of myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia and regular astigmatism.

19. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens comprises electro-active material.

20. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens can be have its optical power tuned.

21. The lens of claim 1, wherein the lens is capable of a dynamic focus.

22. The lens of claim 1, wherein the ambient light is non-polarized light.

23. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens is capable of correcting the wearer'"'"'s distance vision.

24. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens is capable of correcting the wearer'"'"'s intermediate distance vision.

25. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens is capable of correcting for the wearer'"'"'s near vision.

50. The lens of claim 3, wherein said lens comprises a polymer layer.

51. The lens of claim 3 wherein said lens comprises a liquid crystal layer.

54. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens has a progressive addition region.

56. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens has a multifocal region.

58. The lens of claim 5, further comprising a transition zone having pixels between said at least two regions of different vision correction, wherein the index of refraction difference between adjacent pixels in said transition zone ranges between zero to 0.05 units of index diffirential.

60. The lens of claim 1, wherein the variation of refractive index is found within a single layer of said lens.

62. The lens of claim 1, wherein said lens is photochromatic.

64. The lens of claim 50, wherein said polymer is cured with radiation.

65. The lens of claim 50, wherein said polymer is cured with radiation.

26. An ophthalmic spectacle lens comprising:

a vision correcting area having a refractive error correction that focuses an image of non-polarized light on to the retina of an eye for correcting refractive error of the eye, wherein

the vision correcting area'"'"'s refractive error correction is determined at least in part by a wave front analysis of the eye being corrected;

the refractive error correction corrects at least in part for non-conventional refractive error, wherein the non-conventional refractive error is a refractive error other than myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia and regular astigmatism;

wherein the refractive error correction is provided at least in part by a plurality of optical property variations of said lens, wherein said optical property variations are variations in the index of refraction of said lens; and

wherein said lens is capable of being edged into the shape of an eyeglass frame.

27. The lens of claim 26, wherein the refractive error correction is provided by a plurality of localized refractive power variations in said lens.

28. The lens of claim 26, wherein said lens contains pixels.

29. The lens of claim 28, wherein said each individual pixel provides a predetermined optical property.
