1. A method for sensing the orientation of a pen, the method comprising the steps of:

  • providing a surface having coded data disposed in a region thereof, the coded data being indicative of an orientation of the region;

    sensing at least some of the coded data while the pen is used to interact with the surface;

    sensing a force applied to the surface by a nib of the pen;

    processing at least some of the sensed coded data to generate;

    orientation data indicative of the three dimensions of a rotational orientation of the pen relative to the surface, andtransmitting the orientation data and force data indicative of the force to a computer system.
