Abstract

Contact data in a database for a wireless personal communication device are remotely updatable from, or transferable between, a computer system using a radio frequency connection. New contact data, and changes or updates to existing contact data, are input at the computer system or the personal communication device and may be utilized in the personal communication device to initiate contact with, or establish the identity of, actual or potential communicants. Contact data including name, telephone number, address, sound or image information associated with actual or potential communicants is transferred between a computer system and a personal communication device utilizing a radio frequency connection. The personal communication device can be a cellular telephone, PDA or pager, and may also include interfaces for local programming of contact data from a removable keyboard. Additionally, updates and transfers between a computer system and a personal communication device may be accomplished utilizing a serial, parallel or infrared interface.

Claims

1. An improved method for storing contact data in a wireless personal communication device, comprising the steps of:

initiating a message from a message originator to a message recipient under the control of the message originator;

receiving at a message center coupled to a communications network both message originator information provided automatically by the communications network as the caller ID identifying the telephone number of the message originator, and a non-facsimile picture obtained from the message originator prior to transmitting the caller ID to a wireless portable communication device;

causing the communications network to wirelessly transmit the caller ID and the picture from the message center to the wireless portable communication device;

maintaining contact data in a database resident in a computer system, the contact data comprised of at least one of name, telephone number, or image information that is associated with actual or potential communicants;

transmitting the contact data from the computer system to the wireless portable communication device using a radio frequency communication link, where the wireless portable communication device is capable of receiving caller id data supplied from the communications network;

receiving the contact data in a receiver unit of the wireless portable communication device;

storing the received contact data within a database resident in the wireless portable communication device, and;

accessing the contact data which is received and stored within the database for the purpose of establishing the identity of an actual or potential communicant.

2. A method as in claim 1 wherein the wireless portable communication device is a personal digital assistant.

3. A method as in claim 1 wherein the wireless portable communication device is a cellular telephone device.

4. A method as in claim 1 wherein the wireless portable communication device is a two-way pager device.

5. A method as in claim 3 wherein the cellular telephone device includes a pager.

6. A method as in claim 1 wherein the wireless portable communication device further includes a detachable input interface that may be used to add or modify contact data in the database contained in the wireless personal communication device.

7. A method as in claim 2 wherein the personal digital assistant further includes a detachable input interface that may be used to add or modify contact data in the database contained in the personal digital assistant.

8. A method as in claim 3 wherein the cellular telephone device further includes a detachable input interface that may be used to add or modify contact data in the database contained in the cellular telephone device.

9. A method as in claim 4 wherein the two-way pager device further includes a detachable input interface that may be used to add or modify contact data in the database contained in the two-way pager device.

10. A method as in claim 5 wherein the cellular telephone device further includes a detachable input interface that may be used to add or modify contact data in the database contained in the cellular telephone device.

11. A method as in claim 1 wherein the step of maintaining contact data is performed utilizing an automated user input request system.

12. A method as in claim 1 wherein the wireless personal communication device is also capable of tirelessly receiving caller id information comprised of at least one of (a) name and (b) telephone number information automatically supplied from a communications network.

13. A method as in claim 2 wherein the wireless personal digital assistant is also capable of wirelessly receiving caller id information comprised of at least one of (a) name and (b) telephone number information automatically supplied from a communications network.

14. A method as in claim 3 wherein the cellular telephone device is also capable of wirelessly receiving caller id information comprised of at least one of (a) name and (b) telephone number information automatically supplied from a communications network.

15. A method as in claim 4 wherein the two-way pager device is also capable of wirelessly receiving caller id information comprised of at least one of (a) name and (b) telephone number information automatically supplied from a communications network.

16. A method as in claim 5 wherein the cellular telephone device is also capable of wirelessly receiving caller id information comprised of at least one of (a) name and (b) telephone number information automatically supplied from a communications network.

17. A method as in claim 1 wherein the contact data residing in the wireless portable communication device is periodically refreshed by conducting memory dumps from the computer system.

18. A method as in claim 1 wherein the contact data residing in the wireless portable communication device is intermittently transferred between the wireless portable communication device and the computer system.

19. A method as in claim 1 wherein the wireless portable communication device is selectively and releasably coupled to the radio frequency link with the computer system.

20. A method as in claim 1 wherein the contact data in the wireless portable communication device is intermittently downloaded from the computer system.

21. A method as in claim 1 wherein the database in the wireless portable communication device is stored in a removable data card.

22. A method as in claim 2 wherein the database in the personal digital assistant is stored in a removable data card.

23. A method as in claim 1 wherein the database in the cellular telephone device is stored in a removable data card.

24. A method as in claim 4 wherein the database in the two-way pager device is stored in a removable data card.

25. A method as in claim 5 wherein the database in the cellular telephone device is stored in a removable data card.

26. A method as in claim 6 wherein the detachable input interface includes at least one of a detachable keyboard, a serial connection, a parallel connection or an infrared connection.

27. A method as in claim 7 wherein the detachable input interface includes at least one of a detachable keyboard, a serial port, a parallel port or an infrared port.

28. A method as in claim 8 wherein the detachable input interface includes at least one of a detachable keyboard, a serial port, a parallel port or an infrared port.

29. A method as in claim 11 wherein the detachable input interface includes at least one of a detachable keyboard, a serial port, a parallel port or an infrared port.

30. A method as in claim 10 wherein the detachable input interface includes at least one of a detachable keyboard, a serial port, a parallel port or an infrared port.

31. A method as in claim 1 wherein information contained in at least one of the contact data and said received caller id data supplied from the telephone network is utilized to establish communication with potential or actual communicants.

32. A method as in claim 2 wherein information contained in at least one of the contact data and the received caller id data supplied from the communications network is utilized to establish communication with potential or actual communicants.

33. A method as in claim 3 wherein information contained in at least one of the contact data and the received caller id data supplied from the communications network is utilized to establish communication with potential or actual communicants.

34. A method as in claim 4 wherein information contained in at least one of the contact data and the received caller id data supplied from the communications network is utilized to establish communication with potential or actual communicants.

35. A method as in claim 5 wherein the information contained in at least one of the contact data and said received caller id data supplied from the communications network is utilized to establish communication with potential or actual communicants.

36. A method as in claim 1 wherein information contained in the contact data is at least one of (a) displayed and (b) annunciated upon receipt of the caller id data.

37. A method as in claim 2 wherein information contained in the contact data is at least one of (a) displayed and (b) annunciated upon receipt of the caller id data.

38. A method as in claim 3 wherein information contained in the contact data is at least one of (a) displayed and (b) annunciated upon receipt of the caller id data.

39. A method as in claim 4 wherein information contained in the contact data is at least one of (a) displayed and (b) annunciated upon receipt of the caller id data.

40. A method as in claim 5 wherein information contained in the contact data is at least one of (a) displayed and (b) annunciated upon receipt of the caller id data.

41. A method as in claim 12 wherein the information contained in the contact data is at least one of (a) displayed and (b) annunciated upon receipt of the caller id data.

42. A method as in claim 13 wherein the information contained in the contact data is at least one of (a) displayed and (b) annunciated upon receipt of the caller id data.

43. A method as in claim 14 wherein the information contained in the contact data is at least one of (a) displayed and (b) annunciated upon receipt of the caller id data.

44. A method as in claim 15 wherein information contained in the contact data is at least one of (a) displayed and (b) annunciated upon receipt of the caller id data.

45. A method as in claim 16 wherein information contained in the contact data is at least one of (a) displayed and (b) annunciated upon receipt of the caller id data.

46. A method as in claim 2 wherein the database containing the contact data residing in the personal digital assistant is periodically refreshed by conducting memory dumps from the computer system.

47. A method as in claim 2 wherein the contact data residing in the personal digital assistant is intermittently transferred between the wireless personal communication device and said the computer system.

48. A method as in claim 2 wherein the personal digital assistant is selectively and releasably coupled to the radio frequency link with the computer system.

49. A method as in claim 2 wherein the contact data in the personal digital assistants intermittently downloaded from the computer system.

50. A method as in claim 3 wherein the database containing the contact data residing in the cellular telephone device is periodically refreshed by conducting memory dumps from the computer system.

51. A method as in claim 3 wherein the contact data residing in the cellular telephone device is intermittently transferred between the wireless portable communication device and the computer system.

52. A method as in claim 3 wherein the cellular telephone device is selectively and releasably coupled to the radio frequency link with the computer system.

53. A method as in claim 3 wherein the contact data in the cellular telephone device is intermittently downloaded from the computer system.

54. A method as in claim 4 wherein the database containing the contact data residing in the two-way pager device is periodically refreshed by conducting memory dumps from the computer system.

55. A method as in claim 4 wherein the contact data residing in the two-way pager device is intermittently transferred between the wireless portable communication device and the computer system.

56. A method as in claim 4 wherein the two-way pager device is selectively and releasably coupled to the radio frequency link with the computer system.

57. A method as in claim 4 wherein the contact data in the two-way pager device is intermittently downloaded from the computer system.

58. A method as in claim 5 wherein the contact data residing in the cellular telephone device is periodically refreshed by conducting memory dumps from the computer system.

59. A method as in claim 5 wherein the contact data residing in the cellular telephone device is intermittently transferred between the wireless portable communication device and the computer system.

60. A method as in claim 5 wherein the cellular telephone device is selectively and releasably coupled to the radio frequency link with the computer system.

61. A method as in claim 5 wherein the contact data in said the cellular telephone device is intermittently downloaded from the computer system.

62. A method as in claim 2 wherein the step of maintaining contact data is performed utilizing an automated user input request system.

63. A method as in claim 3 wherein the step of maintaining contact data is performed utilizing an automated user input request system.

64. A method as in claim 4 wherein the step of maintaining contact data is performed utilizing an automated user input request system.

65. A method as in claim 5 wherein the step of maintaining contact data is performed utilizing an automated user input request system.

66. In a wireless portable communication device adapted to receive a picture and caller ID, an improved method for storing contact data in a wireless portable communication device, comprising the steps of:

initiating a message from a message originator to a message recipient under the control of the message originator;

receiving at a message center coupled to a communications network both message originator information provided automatically by the communications network as the caller ID identifying the telephone number of the message originator, and a non-facsimile picture obtained from the message originator prior to transmitting the caller ID to a wireless portable communication device;

causing the communications network to wirelessly transmit the caller ID and the picture from the message center to the wireless portable communication device;

maintaining contact data in a database resident in a computer system, the contact data comprised of at least one of name, telephone number, or image information that is associated with actual or potential communicants;

transmitting a radio frequency signal comprised of an ID code and the contact data from a computer system to the wireless portable communication device using a radio frequency communication link;

receiving a radio frequency signal in a receiver unit of the wireless portable communication device;

decoding the radio frequency signal containing the ID code and comparing it against a recorded identification code contained within the wireless portable communication device;

storing the received contact data within a database resident in the wireless portable communication device when the ID code matches the recorded identification code in the wireless portable communication device, and;

accessing the contact data which is received and stored within the database for the purpose of establishing the identity of an actual or potential communicant.
