Abstract

A low-loss shared FTTH distribution network that enables optical communications within a subscriber area, including optical fibers routed from a point of distribution to the subscriber area, a tap device including an optical tap which interfaces a downstream optical fiber with a first optical fiber, and a straight-through optical fiber which is routed straight through the tap device. The tap device may include a splitter which splits the downstream optical fiber into multiple downstream optical fibers, and the tap device may include tap ports for the downstream optical fibers. Any number of straight-through optical fibers may be included which are routed straight through the tap device. A method including routing optical fibers within the subscriber area, tapping at least one optical fiber with a tap device to interface a downstream optical fiber, and routing at least one optical fiber straight through the tap device.

Claims

1. A low-loss shared FTTH distribution network, comprising:

a cable including a plurality of optical fibers routed from the point of distribution into a plurality of subscriber zones, each of said plurality of subscriber zones comprising at least one subscriber location;

a tap device located within a first subscriber zone, said tap device comprising an optical tap which taps a first optical fiber of said plurality of optical fibers with a downstream optical fiber providing at least a portion of an optical path provided to at least one first subscriber location within said first subscriber zone; and

said plurality of optical fibers including a plurality of straight-through optical fibers which are routed straight through said tap device and said first subscriber zone and into a second subscriber zone.

2. The low-loss shared FTTH distribution network of claim 1, wherein said tap device further comprises an upstream port and a downstream port, wherein said straight-through optical fiber is routed is routed straight through said upstream and downstream ports.

3. The low-loss shared FTTH distribution network of claim 1, wherein said first optical fiber comprises at least one fused connection at said tap device.

4. The low-loss shared FTTH distribution network of claim 1, wherein said tap device comprises a splitter which splits said downstream optical fiber into a plurality of optical fibers.

5. The low-loss shared FTTH distribution network of claim 4, wherein said tap device comprises a plurality of tap ports for said plurality of downstream optical fibers.

6. The low-loss shared FTTH distribution network of claim 5, wherein at least one of said plurality of downstream optical fibers comprises a fused connection at a corresponding one of said plurality of tap ports.

7. The low-loss shared FTTH distribution network of claim 5, wherein at least one of said plurality of downstream optical fibers is coupled via a fiber optic connector at a corresponding one of said plurality of tap ports.

8. The low-loss shared FTTH distribution network of claim 1, wherein said tap device further comprises an upstream port and a downstream port, wherein said first optical fiber comprises a first fused connection at said upstream port and a second fused connection at said downstream port.

9. A low-loss shared optical plant, comprising:

a cable including a plurality of optical fibers routed into a plurality of subscriber zones, each of said plurality of subscriber zones comprising at least one subscriber location;

a plurality of tap devices located within a first subscriber zone, each comprising an optical tap which taps one of said plurality of optical fibers with a corresponding one of a plurality of downstream optical fibers;

wherein each of said plurality of downstream optical fibers comprises at least a portion of a corresponding one of a plurality of optical paths provided to a plurality of first subscriber locations within said first subscriber zone; and

said plurality of optical fibers comprising a plurality of straight-through optical fibers which are routed straight through said first subscriber zone and into a second subscriber zone.

10. The low-loss shared optical plant of claim 9, wherein said one of said plurality of optical fibers comprises at least one fused connection.

11. The low-loss shared optical plant of claim 9, wherein at least one of said plurality of downstream optical fibers is interfaced with a corresponding one of said plurality of tap devices via a fiber optic connector.

12. A method distributing optical fibers of a shared FTTH network, comprising:

routing a cable including a plurality of optical fibers into a plurality of subscriber zones;

tapping at least one of the plurality of optical fibers with a tap device within a first subscriber zone to interface a downstream optical fiber which provides at least a portion of an optical path to a subscriber location within the first subscriber zone; and

routing at least two of the plurality of optical fibers straight through the first subscriber zone and into a second subscriber zone.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein said tapping at least one of the plurality of optical fibers with a tap device comprises tapping the at least one of said plurality of optical fibers with a plurality of tap devices.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein said routing at least one of the plurality of optical fibers straight through the first subscriber zone comprises routing at least one of the plurality of optical fibers straight though each of the corresponding number of tap devices and into the second subscriber zone.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein said tapping at least one of the plurality of optical fibers further comprises fusing said at least one of the plurality of optical fibers.

16. The method of claim 12, further comprising interfacing the downstream optical fiber with a fiber optic connector.
