1. A lighted ornament comprising:
- a generally planar first member having a first outer boundary with a desired first shape;
a generally planar second member having a second outer boundary with a shape similar to the first member;
a frame sandwiched between and fixedly coupled to the first and second members, the frame defining a frame outer boundary with a shape similar to the first and second members, the frame comprising at least one discrete spacer that spaces at least one of the first and second members from the frame, wherein the frame is fixedly coupled to a spaced member by a fastener that passes through the spaced member and the spacer;
an internal cavity defined by the first member, the second member, and the frame, the internal cavity being large enough for at least one lighting element to be positioned therein, at least a portion of the first member being configured to allow light from inside the internal cavity to escape therefrom, at least a portion of the first member having features thereon for breaking up light to create a spectral effect; and
an opening in the lighted ornament, the opening configured to allow a conductor to be routed to the at least one lighting element when the at least one lighting element is positioned in the internal cavity.

Abstract
Light shades and lighting systems that create a spectral effect when a lighting element is illuminated within the shade, and features that reflect light originating within the shade. Embodiments of the invention incorporate hollow body having a diffraction grating thereon and an internal cavity to retain one or more lighting elements, and in some instances, to also retain one or more lengths of conductor.

12. A lighting device comprising:
a generally flat body comprising; a first substantially thin sheet having light refractive properties; a first substantially thin sheet having light refractive properties and offset from the first sheet, the first and second sheets defining opposing outermost surfaces of the body; a frame disposed between and fixedly coupled to the first and second sheets; and a plurality of light sources coupled to the body and positioned between the first sheet and the second sheet, the light sources capable of emitting light that passes through at least one of the first and the second sheets;
wherein the frame comprises at least one spacer configured to space apart the frame from at least one of the first and second sheets, wherein the frame is fixedly coupled to the first and second sheets by a fastener that is configured to engage a passage defined by corresponding holes in the first and second sheets and the spacer.- View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20)

21. A method of manufacturing a lighting device, comprising:
-
providing a frame comprising at least one spacer having portions on opposing sides of the frame and at least one lighting element fixedly coupled to the frame; providing a planar first sheet comprising a hole, at least a portion of the first sheet having light refractive properties configured to allow light to pass therethrough; providing a planar second sheet comprising a hole, at least a portion of the second sheet having light refractive properties configured to allow light to pass therethrough; placing the first and second sheets on opposing sides of the frame, wherein the first and second sheets are spaced apart from the frame by the respective portions of the at least one spacer; engaging a first fastener and a second fastener with the hole of the first sheet and the hole of the second sheet, respectively; and fixedly coupling the first and second fasteners to the frame.
