Abstract

A wireless apparatus is described comprising: an RF subsystem to support communication over a wireless network according to a specified network protocol; a Host subsystem to execute program code; and an interface to provide communication of control signals between the RF subsystem and the Host subsystem, the control signals allowing the RF subsystem and/or the Host subsystem to enter into a low power state independently of one another.

Claims

1. A wireless apparatus comprising:

an RF subsystem to support communication over a wireless network according to a specified network protocol, wherein the RF subsystem includes a baseband processor to measure power of a received signal, to select a received signal strength indication (RSSI) value corresponding to the power measurement and based on the selection attempt a transmission at an initial power state, wherein if the transmission is unsuccessful the baseband processor increases the power state by a predetermined amount and attempts to retransmit the transmission;

a Host subsystem to execute program code and process data; and

an interface, coupled between the Host subsystem and the RF subsystem, to provide communication of control signals between said RF subsystem and said Host subsystem, said control signals allowing said RF subsystem to enter into a low power state independent of said Host subsystem and to wirelessly transmit a control signal from the Host subsystem to the RF subsystem to cause the RF subsystem to exit the low power state upon a RF triggering event occurring at the Host subsystem.

2. The apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said Host subsystem comprises RF trigger logic to cause said transmission of the control signal in response to one or more RF trigger events.

3. The apparatus as in claim 2 wherein one of said RF trigger events comprises said Host subsystem having data to be transmitted to said RF subsystem.

4. The apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said RF subsystem periodically and independently exits said low power state to receive a synchronization packet transmitted from a base station at specified points in time.

5. The apparatus as in claim 4 wherein, if said wireless apparatus is identified in a list contained within said synchronization packet, said RF subsystem remains out of said low power state until it receives one or more messages or a timeout occurs.

6. The apparatus as in claim 4 wherein said synchronization packet is transmitted periodically according to the Mobitex protocol.

7. The apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said RF subsystem comprises Host trigger logic to cause said Host subsystem to exit a low power state in response to one or more Host trigger events at the RF subsystem.

8. The apparatus as in claim 7 wherein one of said Host trigger events comprises said RF subsystem having data to be transmitted to said Host subsystem.

9. The apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said RF subsystem is comprised of a baseband processor and an RF transceiver, each capable of independently entering a low power state in response to one or more low power triggering events.

10. A power management interface for a data processing apparatus comprising:

a Host subsystem;

a Host subsystem power management logic to cause the Host subsystem to enter and exit a low power state responsive to a first set of a defined power management events; and

a RF subsystem power management logic to cause a baseband processor and a RF transceiver to enter and exit low power states responsive to a second and third set of defined power management events independent from the Host subsystem, and to wirelessly receive a control signal from the Host subsystem to exit the low Power state upon a RF triggering event occurring at the Host subsystem,

wherein the baseband processor is to measure the power of a received signal, to select a received signal strength indication (RSSI) value corresponding to a power measurement and based on the selection attempt a transmission at an initial power state, wherein if the transmission is unsuccessful the baseband processor increases the power state by a predetermined amount and attempts to retransmit the transmission.

11. The power management interface of claim 10 wherein one of said first set of defined power management events comprises said Host subsystem having data to transmit over a wireless network.

12. The power management interface of claim 10 wherein one of said first set of defined power management events comprises state information to be retrieved from said RF subsystem.

13. The power management interface of claim 10 wherein one of said second and third sets of defined power management events causing said baseband processor followed by said RF transceiver, respectively, to both exit low power states is a synchronization packet periodically transmitted from a base station.

14. The power management interface of claim 13 wherein said synchronization packet is transmitted periodically according to the Mobitex protocol.

15. The power management interface of claim 13 wherein said synchronization packet contains a list of wireless devices which are due to receive data over said wireless network.

16. The power management interface of claim 15 wherein said baseband processor detects an address for its wireless device in said list and, in response, remains out of said low power state to receive data.

17. The power management interface of claim 15 wherein said data comprises email data.

The power management interface of claim 10 wherein one of said first set of a defined power management events is a user executing an application, said host processor exiting said low power state in response thereto, regardless of the current power state of said baseband processor and/or said RF transceiver.

19. The power management interface of claim 10 wherein said Host subsystem power management logic comprises a “

host ready”

(HRDY) signal, indicating to said RF subsystem power management logic that said Host is ready to communicate with said RF subsystem.

20. The power management interface of claim 19 wherein said HRDY signal is generated to acknowledge that said RF subsystem has requested communication with said Host subsystem.

21. The power management interface of claim 19 wherein said HRDY signal is generated to indicate that Host subsystem has data to transmit.

22. The power management interface of claim 10 wherein said RF subsystem power management logic comprises an “

RF ready”

(RFRDY) signal indicating that said RF subsystem requires communication with said Host subsystem and/or as an acknowledgement that said Host subsystem has requested communication with said RF subsystem.
