Abstract

A dry powder inhaler consisting of first chamber having an orifice for holding a dry powder and a gas, and a second chamber for receiving a deaggregated form of the dry powder and for communicating the deaggregated dry powder to a user. A synthetic jet drives the dry powder from the first chamber to the second chamber.

Claims

1. A dry powder inhaler comprising:

a first chamber for holding a dry powder;

a second chamber directly connected to the first chamber by a passageway having an aspect ratio of length to cross-section of at least 0.5, for receiving an aerosolized form of the dry powder and communicating the aerosolized dry powder to a user; and

a vibrator for aerosolizing and driving the dry powder back and forth in the passageway from the first chamber to the second chamber,

wherein the first chamber communicates only with the second chamber, and the aerosolized dry powder is introduced into the second chamber by synthetic jetting.

2. The dry powder inhaler of claim 1, wherein the passageway has an aspect ratio of length to cross-section of at least one.

3. The dry powder inhaler of claim 1, wherein the first chamber is a blister.

4. The dry powder inhaler of claim 1, wherein the first chamber has a cylindrical shape.

5. The dry powder inhaler of claim 1, wherein the first chamber is cone shaped.

6. The dry powder inhaler of claim 1, wherein the first chamber forms a standing wave resonator.

7. The dry powder inhaler of claim 1, wherein the first chamber is in the shape of a horn.

8. The dry powder inhaler of claim 1, wherein the first chamber forms a Helmholtz resonator.

9. A dry powder inhaler comprising:

a first chamber for holding a dry powder and gas;

a second chamber directly connected to the first chamber by a passageway having an aspect ratio of length to cross-section of at least 0.5, for receiving an aerosolized form of the dry powder and communicating the aerosolized dry powder to a user; and

a vibrator for aerosolizing the dry powder in the gas and driving the dry powder back and forth in the passageway,

wherein the the first chamber communicates only with the second chamber, whereupon the dry powder is moved from the first chamber to the second chamber by impulses of gas created by said vibrator.

10. The dry powder inhaler of claim 9, wherein the passageway has an aspect ratio of length to cross-section of at least one.

11. The dry powder inhaler of claim 9, wherein the first chamber is a blister.

12. The dry powder inhaler of claim 9, wherein the first chamber has a cylindrical shape.

13. The dry powder inhaler of claim 9, wherein the first chamber is cone shaped.

14. The dry powder inhaler of claim 9, wherein the first chamber forms a standing wave resonator.

15. The dry powder inhaler of claim 9, wherein the first chamber is in the shape of a horn.

16. The dry powder inhaler of claim 9, wherein the first chamber forms a Helmholtz resonator.

17. The dry powder inhaler of claim 9, wherein the vibrator is a piezoelectric transducer.

18. The dry powder inhaler of claim 9, wherein the passageway has a cross-section diameter in the range of 0.001″

to 0.050″

19. The dry powder inhaler of claim 9, wherein the first chamber is constructed of plastic.

20. The dry powder inhaler of claim 9, wherein the first chamber is constructed of a cold formed laminate material.

21. The dry powder inhaler of claim 20, wherein the laminate material comprises a ti-laminate of oriented polyamide, aluminum foil and polyvinylchloride.

22. The dry powder inhaler of claim 9, wherein the first chamber is constructed of metal.
