Abstract

A vehicle occupant sensing system that includes at least one sensor and at least one sensor assembly. The sensor assembly has a base and an upper slide member supported for movement toward and away from the base wherein the sensor is operable to detect movement of the upper slide member toward and away from the base. The vehicle occupant sensing system also includes at least one contamination barrier member operatively attached to the upper slide member and at least partially shielding the sensor assembly to decrease contamination of the sensor assembly. The vehicle occupant sensing system may be employed in a vehicle seat to detect a condition of the vehicle seat.

Claims

1. A vehicle occupant sensing system for detecting a condition of a vehicle seat assembly having a seat cushion defining an upper surface and a lower surface disposed spaced from the upper surface, said vehicle occupant sensing system comprising:

at least one sensor;

at least one sensor assembly disposed adjacent the lower surface of the seat cushion, said sensor assembly having a base and an upper slide member slidably attached to said base for movement toward and away from said base wherein said sensor is operable to detect movement of said upper slide member toward and away from said base in response to movement of the upper surface toward and away from the lower surface of the seat cushion; and

at least one contamination barrier member operatively attached to said upper slide member and at least partially shielding said sensor assembly to decrease contamination of said sensor assembly.

2. A vehicle occupant sensing system as set forth in claim 1 wherein said contamination barrier member generally extends toward said base.

3. A vehicle occupant sensing system as set forth in claim 2 wherein said contamination barrier member encloses said base.

A vehicle occupant sensing system as set forth in claim 3 wherein said base includes a rim, said upper slide member is position able in a fully extended position away from said rim, and said contamination barrier member encloses said rim of said base when said upper slide member is positioned in said fully extended position.

5. A vehicle occupant sensing system as set forth in claim 1 wherein said sensor assembly defines a subject area and said contamination barrier member includes a ring that substantially extends over said subject area.

6. A vehicle occupant sensing system as set forth in claim 5 wherein said contamination barrier member includes a skirt that extends from said ring toward said base to thereby shield said subject area.

7. A vehicle occupant sensing system as set forth in claim 1 wherein said upper slide member includes a support wall moveably disposed within said base.

A vehicle occupant sensing system as set forth in claim 7 wherein said contamination barrier and said support wall are disposed in spaced relationship so as to define a cavity therebetween, and wherein said base is adapted to be disposed within said cavity when said upper slide member moves toward said base.

9. A vehicle occupant sensing system as set forth in claim 1 wherein said contamination barrier member is integrally attached to said upper slide member.

10. A vehicle seat assembly comprising:

a seat cushion having an upper surface and a lower surface disposed spaced from said upper surface; and

a vehicle occupant sensing system disposed adjacent said lower surface of said seat cushion, said vehicle occupant sensing system including at least one sensor, at least one sensor assembly having a base and an upper slide member slidably attached to said base for movement toward and away from said base wherein said sensor is operable to detect movement of said upper slide member toward and away from said base in response to movement of said upper surface toward and away from said lower surface of said seat cushion, and at least one contamination barrier member operatively attached to said upper slide member and at least partially shielding said sensor assembly to decrease contamination of said sensor assembly.

11. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 10 wherein said contamination barrier member generally extends toward said base.

12. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 11 wherein said contamination barrier member encloses said base.

A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 12 wherein said base includes a rim, said upper slide member is position able in a fully extended position away from said rim, and said contamination barrier member encloses said rim of said base when said upper slide member is positioned in said fully extended position.

14. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 10 wherein said sensor assembly defines a subject area and said contamination barrier member includes a ring that substantially extends over said subject area.

15. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 14 wherein said contamination barrier member includes a skirt that extends from said ring toward said base to thereby shield said subject area.

16. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 10 wherein said upper slide member includes a support wall moveably disposed within said base.

17. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 16 wherein said contamination barrier and said support wall are disposed in spaced relationship so as to define a cavity therebetween, and wherein said base is adapted to be disposed within said cavity when said upper slide member moves toward said base.

18. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 10 wherein said contamination barrier member is integrally attached to said upper slide member.
