Abstract

The present invention relates to a light scrambling system that includes a substrate and a plurality of light pipes. The substrate includes a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. Each of the plurality of light pipes includes a first end on the first surface of the substrate, a second end on the second surface of the substrate, and at least one inside surface formed by a refractive index boundary. The light input is received by the first end at a plurality of input angles, and the light output is transmitted at the second end at a plurality of output angles. At least a portion of the input angles are different from at least a portion of the output angles, thereby scrambling the light received by the first ends of the light pipes and transmitted by the second ends of the light pipes.

Claims

1. A light scrambling system comprising:

a substrate with a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface; and

a plurality of light pipes, each having a first end on the first surface of the substrate, a second end on the second surface of the substrate, and at least one inside surface formed by a refractive index boundary;

wherein each light pipe is adapted to receive a light input at the first end and to transmit the light output at the second end;

wherein the light input is received by the first end at a plurality of input angles, wherein the light output is transmitted at the second end at a plurality of output angles, and wherein at least a portion of the input angles are different from at least a portion of the output angles, thereby scrambling the light received by the first ends of the light pipes and transmitted by the second ends of the light pipes.

2. The light scrambling system of claim 1 wherein the substrate has multiple sides, wherein each of the sides defines a surface area, wherein the first surface and the second surface are the two sides with the largest surface areas.

3. The light scrambling system of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of light pipes is unbranched and continuous such that there is a 1:

1 ratio of first ends and second ends.

4. The light scrambling system of claim 1 wherein the first end and the second end are flush to the surface of the substrate.

The light scrambling system of claim 1 wherein the refractive index boundary is adapted to alter the direction of the light in the substrate such that the light input is received by the first end of a light pipe at a plurality of input angles and the refractive index boundary alters the direction of at least a portion of the light input such that the light output is transmitted at the second end of the light pipe at a plurality of output angles, wherein at least a portion of the input angles are different from at least a portion of the output angles.

The light scrambling system of claim 5 wherein the portion of the light input that is received by the first end of the light pipe at an input angle perpendicular to the first end of the light pipe is transmitted at the second end of the light pipe at an output angle perpendicular to the second end.

The light scrambling system of claim 5 wherein the portion of the light input that is received by the first end of the light pipe at an acute input angle to the first end of the light pipe is transmitted at the second end of the light pipe at an output angle to the second end that is substantially equal to and opposite to the input angle.

The light scrambling system of claim 5 wherein the portion of the light input that is received by the first end of the light pipe at an obtuse input angle to the first end of the light pipe is transmitted at the second end of the light pipe at an output angle to the second end that is substantially equal to and opposite to the input angle.

9. The light scrambling system of claim 1 wherein the refractive index boundary is formed by at least one discontinuity in the substrate.

10. The light scrambling system of claim 9 wherein the discontinuity is a cut in the substrate that forms a refractive index boundary between the portions of substrate separated by the cut.

11. The light scrambling system of claim 1 wherein the substrate is comprised of a plurality of sections coupled together and at least one section contains at least one refractive index boundary.

12. The light scrambling system of claim 11 wherein the discontinuity is a border between at least two sections of the substrate that forms a refractive index boundary between the sections of substrate.

13. The light scrambling system of claim 11 wherein the substrate is transparent.

14. The light scrambling system of claim 11 wherein the substrate is selected from the group consisting of plastic, silicones, thermoplastics, thermosets, ceramics, fiber reinforced plastics, thermoplastic composites, thermoset composites, ceramic matrix composites, organic matrix composites, and combinations thereof.

15. The light scrambling system of claim 11 wherein a first inside surface of a light pipe is defined by at least one first cut in a first section.

16. The light scrambling system of claim 15 wherein a second inside surface of a light pipe is defined by at least one second cut in the first section.

17. The light scrambling system of claim 16 wherein a third inside surface of a light pipe is defined by at least one border between the first section and a second section of the substrate.

18. The light scrambling system of claim 17 wherein a fourth inside surface of a light pipe is defined by at least one border between the first section and a third section of the substrate.

19. The light scrambling system of claim 18 wherein the light pipes have a rectangular cross section.

20. A light scrambling system comprising:

a plurality of substrate sections coupled together to form a substrate with a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface; and

a plurality of light pipes, each having a first end on the first surface of the substrate, a second end on the second surface of the substrate, at least one inside surface formed by a refractive index boundary defined by a cut in a first substrate section, and at least one inside surface formed by a refractive index boundary defined by a border between the first substrate section and a second substrate section;

wherein each light pipe is adapted to receive a light input at the first end, to transmit the light output at the second end, and the refractive index boundaries are adapted to alter the direction of the light in the substrate;

wherein the light input is received by the first end of a light pipe at a plurality of input angles, the refractive index boundary alters the direction of at least a portion of the light input, and the light output is transmitted at the second end of the light pipe at a plurality of output angles, wherein at least a portion of the input angles are different from at least a portion of the output angles, thereby scrambling the light received by the first ends of the light pipes and transmitted by the second ends of the light pipes.
