1. A scanning module, comprising:
- a MEMS scanner that moves through a predetermined scan path at a selected scan rate having a scanning period; and
a MEMS membrane mounted to the MEMS scanner, the membrane being deformable through a desired deformation range and having a response time sufficiently fast to deform through the desired deformation range within the scanning period, wherein the scanning module has an expected imaging distance from an image plane and wherein a plurality of locations on the predetermined scan path each have a respective expected optical path length to the image plane, and wherein the deformation range of the MEMS membrane is selected to correct for differences in the respective expected optical path lengths.

Abstract
A scanning system device has a predetermined aberration as it scans or switches light along selected optical paths. A deformable membrane receives the light and introduces an inverse “aberration” that offsets that of the scanning system. In one embodiment the scanning system includes a torsion arm that supports an oscillatory body. The torsion arm and/or body can be machined from metal, micromachined in silicon or formed in a variety of other ways. Alternatively, the scanning system may include a rotating polygonal scanner or other type of optical scanner. In another approach, an optical switch replaces the scanner.

2. A method for correcting wave front aberrations comprising:
-
emitting a beam from a light source along a beam path; reflecting the beam from a deformable mirror; actuating a scanner to which the deformable mirror is mounted along a predetermined scan path at a selected scan rate having a scanning period, the scanner causing an aberration in the beam, the aberration varying with movement of the scanner along the predetermined scan path; and actuating the deformable mirror mounted to the scanner at a frequency and amplitude effective to reduce the aberration with movement of the scanner along the predetermined scan path. - View Dependent Claims (3, 4, 5)
