Abstract

An electro-optic modulator modulates light in response to a life-form bio-potential to provide a bio-potential modulated light output. Modulation can be carried out as a result of capacitive coupling with the bio-potential. Phase, polarization, and intensity light modulation can be used. The light output can then be converted to electronic form for further processing. An optical power splitter is used to split light into multiple portions that are converted to electrical form. A pilot tone is used to achieve high sensitivity and synchronize multiple electro-optic modulators while phase modulation can be used to reduce noise in the bio-potential signal. Low-coherent light may be used as the light source. A housing is provided that can be hermetically-sealed and provided with electro-magnetic shielding.

Claims

1. A method for measuring electro-physiological activity comprising:

a) providing a life form having a bio-potential;

b) providing an electro-optic modulator;

c) providing light to said electro-optic modulator;

d) modulating said light in said electro-optic modulator with said bio-potential to produce a bio-potential modulated light wherein said modulating of said light in said electro-optic modulator with said bio-potential is carried out by capacitive coupling with said bio-potential; and

e) providing said bio-potential modulated light as a bio-potential modulated light output.

2. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 1 further comprising the step of splitting said light into a second light portion with the first light portion being provided to said electro-optic modulator according to step c) of claim 1.

3. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 2 further comprising the step of converting said second light portion to electrical form.

4. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 1 further comprising the step of splitting said light into a multiple of light portions using an optical power splitter comprising:

a) multiple light splitters; and

b) a plurality of photodetectors, each photodetector receiving light from separate light splitters of said multiple light splitters and converting it to electrical form.

5. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 4 further comprising the step of providing said light from said multiple light splitters to said plurality of photodetectors with a plurality of light fibers.

6. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 1 further comprising the step of transforming said bio-potential modulated light output into electronic form.

7. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 6 further comprising the step of processing said electronic form to provide a desired output form.

8. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 1 further comprising the step of providing a pilot tone that is superimposed on said bio-potential.

9. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 1 further comprising the step of phase modulating said light in either unmodulated or bio-modulated form.

10. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 1 further comprising at least one of the following steps:

a) said light is provided to said electro-optic modulator at an angle to vertical and b) said bio-potential modulated light emerging from said electro-optic modulator is provided at an angle to vertical.

11. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 1 further comprising the step of providing said bio-potential to a bio-potential plate that is used to modulate said light in said electro-optic modulator.

12. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 11 further comprising the step of electrically connecting said bio-potential plate to a pick-up pad for acquiring said bio-potential.

13. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 11 further comprising the step of electrically connecting said bio-potential plate to a shunting resistor.

14. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 1 further comprising the step of providing a housing for said electro-optic modulator that is at least partially covered with electro-magnetic shielding.

15. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 14 wherein said electro-magnetic shielding is conductive paint.

16. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 1 further comprising the step of providing a hermetically-sealed housing for said electro-optic modulator.

17. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 1 wherein said step of providing light to said electro-optic modulator is carried out with a low-coherent laser diode light source.

18. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 1 further comprising the step of providing said electro-optic modulator as a polymer or crystal that changes form in response to said bio-potential.

19. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 1 wherein said step of modulating said light in said electro-optic modulator with said bio-potential produces a change in at least one of the following light properties:

a) phase, b) polarization, c) intensity, and d) combinations thereof.

20. The method for measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 1 wherein said electro-optic modulator is provided as a Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed in a polymer or crystal that changes form in response to said bio-potential.

21. The method of measuring electro-physiological activity according to claim 1 further comprising the step of preventing excess light in said electro-optic modulator from emerging from said electro-optic modulator with said bio-potential modulated light.

22. A method for measuring electro-physiological activity comprising:

a) providing a life form having a bio-potential;

b) providing an electro-optic modulator;

c) providing light to said electro-optic modulator;

d) providing a pilot tone that is superimposed on said bio-potential;

e) modulating said light in said electro-optic modulator with said bio-potential to produce a bio-potential modulated light; and

f) providing said bio-potential modulated light as a bio-potential modulated light output.

23. A method for measuring electro-physiological activity comprising:

a) providing a life form having a bio-potential;

b) providing an electro-optic modulator;

c) providing light to said electro-optic modulator;

d) modulating said light in said electro-optic modulator with said bio-potential to produce a bio-potential modulated light;

e) providing said bio-potential modulated light as a bio-potential modulated light output; and

f) said method further comprising at least one of the following steps;

a) providing said light to said electro-optic modulator at an angle to vertical, and

b) providing said bio-potential modulated light emerging from said electro-optic modulator at an angle to vertical.

24. A method for measuring electro-physiological activity comprising:

a) providing a life form having a bio-potential;

b) providing an electro-optic modulator;

c) providing light to said electro-optic modulator;

d) providing said bio-potential to a bio-potential plate electrically connected to a shunting resistor wherein said bio-potential plate is used to modulate said light in said electro-optic modulator to produce a bio-potential modulated light; and

e) providing said bio-potential modulated light as a bio-potential modulated light output.
