1. A method for removing interfering agents from a composite membrane comprising:

  • providing an electrochemical sensor comprising an electrode, said electrode including a composite membrane disposed thereon, said composite membrane comprising two or more layers;

    providing an electrical source in electrical contact with said electrode;

    exposing the electrode to a first sample;

    measuring a signal generated by the first sample by use of the electrical source;

    replacing the first sample with a rinse solution after said measuring; and

    applying an electrical potential with the electrical source to said electrode while exposing the electrode to said rinse solution, wherein the electrical potential is sufficient to cause at least a portion of the interfering agents in said composite membrane to be oxidized and removed.
